Book Club wasn’t that bad, and she needed extracurricular activities to be able to graduate. Well, they weren’t NEEDED, but they looked good on college applications, right? It was Friday after class, every week. Where they would discuss new books, or all read a book together, and discuss how far they’d gotten. It was a leisure club, meaning there wasn’t any requirement, or a deadline with how far you had to read.
Bunny pushed the bar on the door, hating the horribly loud clicking sound it made as she pushed in. The vacuum of the library whipped her short hair, and caused her to flinch. Libraries were funny places. It was solitary, almost. Its own building that seemed to be colder than the rest of the school. It also felt a bit dry, of course—any little bit of moisture could ruin the books forever. While Bunny made her way through the shelves, she let her fingers slide along the spines of the books.
Books had spines, faces, and backs. Like a person, almost. But books had more interesting things to say, than most people. And she felt closer to the stories in the pages, like she felt at home when she could immerse herself in the stories. And hopefully, at the this club, she could find other people who felt the same way. She made her way to the center of the library, past the computers, where a few chairs and the sofas had been arranged in a circle. That had to be it, right? She tucked her short hair behind her ear, and looked around with a slight frown. No one was here yet. Reaching into the bag tucked under her arm, she pulled out her phone and checked the time. Oh, fifteen minutes early. Apparently people took a break between the classes and clubs, made sense.
Tucking her phone back into her bag, she slowly lowered herself onto the couch stiffly. She glanced over at the empty seat, and pushed her lips to the side. That meant the space next to her was open for someone to sit in. Part of her wanted to get up, and sit in a single chair, just to avoid the awkward sitting people did to avoid touching each other. But maybe, the person that would sit next to her could be a friend, or someone familiar. Her thumb brushed over the strap of her bag, considering texting Benny and asking him if he wanted to come. Then again, she needed friends outside of their little group. And Benny seemed to be in a Mackenzie fix right now. Everyone seemed to be paired off. Joey had Jamie, Benny had Mackenzie, Gideon had…his studies.
Bunny let her bag slide off her shoulder and onto the floor between her feet while she relaxed into the couch, her head tilting backwards. She drew in a slow breath, and counted to ten—before letting it out slowly as well. She could do this, she needed to do this. Opening her eyes, making sure a librarian wasn’t nearby, she leaned over to reach into her bag and pull out the small bottle of honey. It was one of those cute bear ones, with the triangle tip that was perfect to sip from. Her guilty pleasure—she ate honey like it was water, at times. She twisted the top, and took a sip from it, letting the sugary sweetness sit on her tongue, before chewing it needlessly. It calmed her nerves, and settled her down when she was in an uncomfortable spot, and this—this was definitely uncomfortable.

It had been a simply smashing day at the lovely realm of the Academy of Baum. Brandon had awoken early in the morning, humming himself a merry and proper British shanty as he readied himself for the day’s noble ventures. He’d then attended his classes, most of which were quite boring indeed, including a most severe lack of noble dueling and dragon-slaying and other such activities that certainly should have been included in any proper school curriculum, in Brandon’s humble opinion. What use was life if a student was not educated in the proper arts of Magic and the Dragon of Slaying? Slaying of Dragons, rather? Not a large amount of use, ‘twas certain.
Still, Brandon had managed to pull himself through each of his classes, completing his homework, and attending his rehearsal for the valiant legions of the School Band. Now, ‘twas evening time, the usual period of Brandon’s bedtime at the bright, chipper hour of eight o’clock sharp. Brandon was absolutely cream crackered, and certainly could have used a long slumber at the moment, but was going to have no such luck tonight. No sir, tonight was the weekly meeting of the true and noble Club of Books.
Now, Brandon was not disappointed about this, oh no. Brandon was simply pleased as punch for the gathering tonight. He greatly enjoyed being a member of the Club of Books, as the members were simply the dog’s bollocks, and oh, but how Brandon did adore the reading of literature, particularly those works with references to the Magical arts! He did hope that they decided to read one such book tonight: he always found books lacking Magic rather drab things. After all, Magic was a wonderful and beautiful thing. Why on Earth would one not wish to use such a power?
Brandon entered the Bilary, or library, rather, taking a couch on the seat next to a very keen-looking lass clad in a most lovely shade of yellow. She seemed to be drinking something from a bottle: a Magical potion, perhaps? Did this mean that they would be reading a Magical selection after all? Brandon was instantly intrigued.
“Why, hello there.”
[/color] He bowed his head slightly, as was proper for a grand and loyal Brit when greeting a fair maiden. “So what shall we be reading tonight? The Epic Odyssey of Sir Harry of Potter perhaps? Or one of the many brilliant works of William Shakespeare?”[/color] There would be no need for Brandon to read in that case, for he had memorized both collections of works quite well by this tender age of sixteen years. Still, he hoped that their selection would be something charming, perhaps involving a dragon or two. It had been quite some time since he’d read a passage about his sworn enemy, and he was sure that a refresher of sorts was in order. Bunny looked up, when she felt someone moving in closer. A boy, great. A boy. Like she wasn't having enough troubles with them already. Oh, that was mean. Benny was a doll, and Gideon was sweet. Darius...was neither of those, but still. A boy, nevertheless. She smiled politely when he came in closer, but when he spoke, there was a sudden ache in her chest. So, the British and Irish wern't exactly known for being the best of pals, but it made her feel less alone. That someone was from the same neck of the words she was from. And, even better--there wouldn't be a need to force herself to speak slowly for someone to understand.
"Hello," She smiled, and straightened up, and then shook her head. "No, actually, I think we're reading Eragon. That's what I was told, at least." She chirped in her friendly little Irish lilt, leaning down to her bag and pulling out a blue book, with a dragon painted on the front. She rested it in her lap, while setting the bottle of honey on the floor near her feet. "I haven't actually started it yet. It looks a tad frightening though." She moved her fingers to her mouth, and stared down at the cover. The dragon was a bit cartoony, but she wasn't a fan of something that was big enough to swoop down and eat her. Actually, Bunny was nervous of a great deal of things. "They wouldn't..." Delayed Bunny was delayed.
"The Epic Edyssey of Sir Harry of Potter?" One of her brows furrowed over her brown eyes, "Isn't it just easier to say Harry Potter?" This boy had a funny way of talking. Like he was something straight out of one of the books, instead of a real person. He even dressed rather funny, too. Nothing matched at all. He honestly looked like a wardrobe had thrown up on him, but it was endearing. In a bizzare sort of way. Bunny culred her fingers, touching her own hands to make sure her fingers wern't sticky from the honey. They wern't sticky. Good. She opened her fingers again, and held her hand out for the bizzare boy. "My name is Bunny." No Coinin, no explination. She had finally just gotten use to the fact that she was Bunny, and it was a lot easier than to waste breath. "Who are you?" [/blockquote] |

The fair maiden’s voice was quite sweet indeed, like thick honey pouring from a pitcher. Brandon found himself quite enjoying the sentences she formed, even those that were rather short and drab. Drab! But how could he ever find anything this lovely lass said drab? Brandon found himself hanging on her every word, allowing it to disseminate itself through his mind. Oh, but how simply dashing her accent was! It was neither British nor American, of that much Brandon was certain, and yet her words were rather lovely in their eloquence. How Brandon did wish he could have such a darling accent as hers!
"Hello," She smiled, and straightened up, and then shook her head. "No, actually, I think we're reading Eragon. That's what I was told, at least."
”Eragon?” Brandon had never heard name a such-such a name, rather-which seemed like a mispronunciation of Aragorn, King of Rohan. But Brandon’s attention was instantly held when he was alerted to the front cover of the volume: a dragon. Brandon kuckled his cracks. ”A book about dragons? Why, how smashing!” He laughed heartily. ”I am quite interested in the art of slaying dragons, you see, and would be quite glad to read a volume concerning them. Do you think there will be a large amount of dragon slaying in this Eragon volume?” Brandon could feel the excitement growing in his chest. A book about the slaying of dragons! How perfectly fascinating!

”Easier, I’m sure,” replied Brandon with a chuckle. Oh, the folly of this young girl! But he did enjoy her presence so. ”But I have always believed that a proper Brit must strive to challenge himself in every available regard.” He shrugged. ”I like to think that I am a proper Brit. And where are you from? Has your country a differing Chivalry of code? Code of Chivalry, rather?”
"My name is Bunny." No Coinin, no explination. She had finally just gotten use to the fact that she was Bunny, and it was a lot easier than to waste breath. "Who are you?"
Bunny! My, but what strange names citizens of this maiden’s home country had! Still, Brandon couldn’t help but smile. It was a rather lovely name, all considers thinged. ”Bunny,” he said to himself, feeling the syllables roll of his tongue. Twas as much a pleasure to say as ‘twas to hear. ”My name is Brandon. Brandon Arthur Johnson. ‘Tis quite lovely to make your acquaintance, dearest Bunny.”
He paused, glancing down at the volume she held. "Shall we read together, then? I regret that I do not own a copy of this work." 'Twas quite a shame, not owning a book that others were reading, but Brandon resolved to purchase a copy once he returned to Hereford.

Bunny couldn't help but smile at his reaction from just hearing this boy's reaction to the book. It was child-like, at best. Interested in the art of slaying dragons. Part of her wanted to remind him that dragons wern't real, but the light in his eyes, and the cheer in his voice was real. If he believed in it, who was she to burst his bubble? "Well, this..." She turned the book over in her hands, and pointed at the blurb on the back, "Apparently this boy becomes friends with the dragon, or something. But what's a hero story without, evil? So, I'm certain there will be evil dragons that need to be slain."
There was something about this boy that seemed easier than the others she was dealing with in her life. As where Gideon and Benny were quiet and reserved, and Darius was---mental shudder---Brandon was light, and bubbly, and happy. And that's something that Bunny needed to bring her out of her shell. "I'm from Ireland!" But something more creative. This boy seemed to enjoy the fantasy bit, and then she smiled and an equal light came to her eyes. "Leprechauns and fairies there. And it's green, all the time. But it does rain a lot. It's still quite lovely." Okay--so she needed a bit of practice on the creativity bit, but at least she was trying.
"Brandon Arthur Johnson." She repeated with a grin, "Then I'm afriad I haven't been entirely truthful. My name is Coinin Willow Cliste. But I go by Bunny, because Coinin sounds like it's spelled C-O-L-E-E-N, but it's old irish, so it's C-O-I-N-I-N. But it means rabbit, or bunny in old irish." Maybe of all the explination wasn't that bad, he seemed like a talker.
"It's...lovely to make your acquaintance, Sir Brandon Arthur Johnson." She beamed, and scooted over a little more on the tiny couch in the library to make room for him. "We could pass it back and forth, and read it outloud and pretend it's a play or something?" Long shot. And as soon as the words were out of her mouth, she instantly regretted the absurdity of it. Her smile wilted slightly, and all she wanted to do was shove the book into Brandon's hands, and turn tail and run. |

Brandon hoped he wasn’t boring this lovely lass, Bunny, with his talk of dragons and magic. He could certainly not imagine any sort of person who would be bored by the prospect of dragons and magic, but he had to concede that such people certainly did exist. Own to his each, he reasoned. But oh, how he hoped that Bunny was not one such person! She did seem such a keen and lovely lass, one that might very well be, as he himself was, fascinated with fantasies and fairy tales.
"Well, this..." She turned the book over in her hands, and pointed at the blurb on the back, "Apparently this boy becomes friends with the dragon, or something. But what's a hero story without, evil? So, I'm certain there will be evil dragons that need to be slain."
This seemed to make her rather happy. It certainly made Brandon happy. ”So there shall be a dragon, then? Why, how lovely indeed! Why, what a lovely story!” Brandon was certain that he was going to quite enjoy this Club of Books, if it involved books about saying evil dragons. What a splendid idea this had been!
"I'm from Ireland!"
”Ireland, eh?” What a beautiful country indeed! Brandon had never visited, but he’d certainly flown over it on many an airplane journey to America, and knew that the land shone a beautiful and vibrant shade of green. ”I am from Hereford, England,” he replied, smiling as he pictured the beautiful fields and castles of his hometown. ”Tis a splendid little town, just East of the Welsh border. Is it nice in Ireland? I’ve heard it’s rather lovely. And what brings you across the sea to the Academy of Baum?”
"Leprechauns and fairies there. And it's green, all the time. But it does rain a lot. It's still quite lovely."
Brandon was sold upon the first word. ”Leprechauns and fairies, you say?” His eyes were wide with fascination. ”Real leprechauns and fairies? Why, you must take me to this wonderful land!” Brandon could hardly believe his luck. He was here, reading a book about dragons, with a fair maiden who had, in fact, seen a leprechaun and a fairy! ”It has been my dream since I was a young lad to see such a creature as a leprechaun or a fairy, you understand.”
"Brandon Arthur Johnson." She repeated with a grin, "Then I'm afriad I haven't been entirely truthful. My name is Coinin Willow Cliste. But I go by Bunny, because Coinin sounds like it's spelled C-O-L-E-E-N, but it's old irish, so it's C-O-I-N-I-N. But it means rabbit, or bunny in old irish."
Brandon nodded. Conin! An exotic name! ”C-O-N-I-N,” he repeated, making sure to take note of the spelling so he would not misspell it in the future. ”Lady Conin of Willow Cliste. Or Bunny. ‘Tis a pleasure to meet you, Bunny. And you may call me Brandon, of course, though really you may call me whatever name tickles your fancy. I shall respond in due course.” He laughed to himself.
"We could pass it back and forth, and read it outloud and pretend it's a play or something?"
A play? What a novel idea! ”Like a Shakespeare play?” he asked, grinning broadly. ”Oh, how I do adore the works of Shakespeare! I should greatly enjoy acting out Eragon like a Shakespeare play. I shall begin.” He took the novel, flipping eagerly to the first play. He cleared his throat and threw his head back, announcing an a booming Shakespearean voice, “Wind howled through the night, carrying a scent that would change the world.” He smiled, passing the book back to Bunny. ”Your turn, my lady.”
