personality
defiant but kind -- Andromeda doesn't really do what most people tell her to. At least, it's not her first instinct. It's also not her first instinct to do the complete opposite, either, as some people are. Her immediate answer to any request is 'no', unless Teach is the one asking her. Since most people aren't Teach, this leads her into a bit of trouble with authority figures. Because somewhere inside, she thinks that RJ's orders are really the only ones that need to be followed. Though she's not the kind to flat out rebel, and usually she's kind about not doing what she's asked, if that makes sense.
defensive&all talk -- The girl can boast that she can take down a much larger opponent in a fight, but really, it really never happens. She's only ever been in and won one fight in her life, and even then, the man was completely drunk and was on the brink of passing out as it was. Her strategy is to get a reputation out there so she doesn't have to test her skills. Which sucks, because she knows one day it'll get her into trouble.
loyal&almost clingy -- Andie doesn't always make friends, but when she does, she sticks with them until the end. Even if they don't really want her to. She's the kind of friend that will offer to beat someone up if they mess with you, and also the kind that won't go behind your back and lie to your face. In fact, she's honest even when the truth isn't what someone wants to hear, because she finds that to be better in the long run. Also, her loyalty and love for her friends goes almost to the point where she can seem a little clingy and desperate for companionship. But that's not what it is, really.
reasonable but a bit childish -- Most of the time, Andie has a very good opinion, and one that makes perfect sense to most. Her plans normally work, and she's good at resolving emotional conflict. The problem is that she conveys these things in a way that's silly and slightly immature. She doesn't mean to, of course. It's just kind of how she rolls. Often times she introduces her reasoning as a joke and turns it into seriousness later.
gamer&athlete -- Which seems like a bit of a contradiction, and not really a personality trait at all, but it's example of how she sets boundary lines, and purposely sticks to one side at a time. She can play and excel at sports like fencing and soccer and track, then go back to her dorm, put on pajamas, and sit in her beanbag chair to play Skyrim until she passes out. Andie knows that clear lines between things like nerds and jocks exist, but makes it her goal to not care about them at all. Of course, she never talks about her games at practice or about her sports online. That would be weird.
past
When Andromeda Morgan Read was born, and for much of her childhood, her father was at sea. He was a Navy sailor, and thus was not able to be home that often. That was okay, though, because Andie was rather close to her mother for always. They did everything together, from picking out outfits for the day to school/work projects. Andie often times helped her mother with the articles she was wrtiting, and her advice was actually taken. They were like peas and carrots, Andie and her. That lasted until Andie was in the eigth grade. She was made fun of for being so close to her mother, but she didn't care. Her mom and her were closer than any mother/daughter in existance while others fought and disagreed.
Apparently, fate preferred the latter.
One day, Andie and Allison were at the checkout counter at the jewelry store, and Allison had just bought a necklace for Andromeda's fourteenth birthday. It was a darker silver colored pendant/chain with diamonds. It was A, "for Andromeda, Allison, and Always," so her mom said. The last words she would ever say. Because that day, a man walked in and started shooting.
Her mom, the cashier, and a male customer shopping for an engagement ring were hit before a brave customer tackled the man and knocked the gun from his hands.
When Andie's father found out, he was devastated and began to spiral. He attacked an influential senior officer and was dishonorably discharged from the Navy. Which, on the outside, was for the better. Now the traumatized teen would have someone to care for her. The problem with that? Brandon Read couldn't cope with the guilt of not being there to protect his wife. So he went on a downward spiral into drugs and alcohol. And as he descended that spiral, he started to feel less guilty and began to blame his daughter. There wasn't any physical abuse, really. Only emotional detachment that was almost as bad.
One day, over the summer between eigth and ninth grade, he snapped. He was totally drunk and was teetering on the edge of passing out, but he was still lucid enough to punch Andie across the face. She replied with a few punches back and a pulse check when he finally went unconscience, finishing off with a call to the police. Brandon was smart, though, and managed to clean himself up a bit before the day social services would check things out. He was deemed fit and the fight was said to be just a mistake, and everyone was expected to carry on with their lives. But Andie refused to.
She came up with a deal for her now less-drunk dad: boarding school or she would expose his more illegal habits to the police. He agreed, and so Andromeda Read ended up at Baum Academy.
present
In freshman year at Baum, Andie started out having no friends. She wasn't exactly in the righ mindset to interact socially. But when she met RJ Teach, her whole world kind of turned around. Honestly, it probably wasn't a big deal to anyone else, but Teach kind of restored purpose and positivity in her life. And thus, she was able to make more friends, though none considered as close as he is. Though a few do come close.
Now in her sophomore year, she's able to act and actually feel genuinely happy. Though that's not stopping her from partying and sometimes wasting herself away. It's just something to do with her friends. Though she feels like a hypocrite sometimes for drinking when she hates her alchoholic father, she justifies it by saying she's showing him what he's doing. Though she's hoping she doesn't get caught, because fencing and track would fly out the window.
Not that she doesn't have anything else to do, but she still likes playing sports and being active some of the time.
