Jemissa was completely, utterly, absolutely, and definitely bored. Her internet was being stupid, she didn't know where her pack of cards or other games she could make one-player was she had somewhere in the disorganized hell that was her side of the dorm. She didn't own any video games, her phone wasn't exactly game friendly, and she ALMOST wished her roommate was he-
WAIT HER PHONE.
She could text Jamie! Or Cleo. But Jamie more likely. So she did, and now they were going to bake a cake.
Why was it so quiet?
Oh, Jiminy. He wasn't here, for some reason. Whatever, Jiminy didn't matter when it came to Jamie. Well, not exactly. He had his thoughts, and those thoughts were that Jamie was Pinocchio, which was believeable, but Jemissa for some reason didn't exactly WANT to believe it. She didn't know why, maybe it was because she loved him and didn't want her duties as an OFFICIAL official conscience getting in the way of that. Not that 'that' was even a real thing yet, just...
OH RIGHT. She had to find the cake mix she bought the other day, seeing as she was out of deserts and baking things was definitely better than buying them already made. That way, the dessert could be yours and original and any type of delicious flavor you want. Well, storebought Funfetti cakemix and frosting wasn't exactly the epitome of a homemade dessert, but oh well.
She dug through all the piles of stuff she had lying around, which was pretty much all she owned confined to one side of a smallish room, but that was all she had, so. Oh, right, there it was, in her closet, wrapped up in the grocery bag to keep it safe. She knew that.
Now, all she had to do was wait for Jamie to get here, seeing as he said he was 'coming to get her', but not in the creepy way. That made her giggle, and she was gld Melody or whatever wasn't around, because it was extremely embarrassing, even for her laugh.
She wondered if she should change. After all, she was wearing kiiiind of a nice shirt. Yeah, she should. So she found some junky t-shirt and old jeans and put them on instead. Yeah, that was much better. notes; Food Sciences, science building. Yes, no? OUTFIT

There was something awesome about J. Well, there was definitely now just one thing, there were many. Maybe it was that when she smiled because of him it made Jamie feel like a decent person for once. Or maybe it was because she went with all of his ideas instead of simply remarking that they were crazy and walking away. Yep, he’s had people do that before. Those people didn’t know how to have fun. Then there was the fact that she was beautiful. Jamie could never say this to her face. It wouldn’t mean enough to her to just express in words. His version of beauty wasn’t the physical kind that almost anyone can possess with make-up or photoshop. It was their personality too. J was an amazing person. He never felt so admiring of anyone since Cleo. Although, unlike her, He felt like he could tell J everything about his life and she’d still stick around and help him make it better. Yet, whenever he opened his mouth the words just wouldn’t form. Jamie slipped on one of his old concert tees while mulling this over. He hadn’t even looked at them since he packed them up two years ago. His one-man-band was called “Breathe”. Jamie never really liked the name but his label said it fit. They claimed that whenever they listened to his music, it lifted the stress away and let them relax. Of course, that element went away once Jamie took the his first hardcore drug. But he wouldn’t thing about that now. He’d save it for after the cake making was done. Jamie loved cake! He’d never baked one before but he guess J had and it would be fine. He skipped out of his building and all the way to J’s door in an effort to bring back his good mood. It worked. Either that or the excitement of seeing that smiling face again. “Knock knock!” he said. “This is the police. We’ve come to arrest because of your baking skills. You’re required to make us more donuts as your sentence.” He said with a goofy grin. Jamie was fairly sure the smile would be carved into his face for the rest of the day. Not that that was was a bad thing. Notes: C wut I did thur? Outfit: CAKE!!!

Jemissa was almost tempted to go out and look for Jamie because she was impatient, but then it would probably have turned into one of those awkward moments when you go look for someone you think is lost and they end up at your room. Which would totally happen to her, just saying. Though she was literally tapping her foot, pacing around the room. When was he gonna get here? Then, she looked at her clock and realized it had been about a minute since the last text. Okay, that was seriously the longest minute of her life.
“Knock knock! This is the police. We’ve come to arrest because of your baking skills. You’re required to make us more donuts as your sentence.”
At first she almost panicked, because what the hell did she do now?, but then she realized it was only Jamie. Sillyface. he was always acting like a big kid, because he was.
WAIT A SECOND, IT WAS-
"JAMIEEEE!"
She ran to the door and opened it, the force nearly knocking the small girl down but Jamie was in the way. She kind of stood there, pressed up against him for a moment, before realizing where she was and using him to stand herself back up. Niiiice. But whatever, who cared if her cheeks were a little red? Well, come to think of it, it wasn't like she had every really been embarrassed over something Jamie-related before. Maybe a few times, but nothing really like this ever.
Hmmm.
Jemissa held up the bag with the cake mix, grinning. "Sorry, officer, I can't do donuts. Only cake. Is there an appeal process?" Oh, she was soooo ready for cake baking with her best friend.

Jamie stood there a bit confused as J leaned up against him. He at first thought it was a hug but then realize she tripped. That wasn’t what he was confused about though. He was more confused about the feeling he was getting as she was pressed up against him. His face felt warm and his heart was beating fast like he was nervous. But he wasn’t nervous. He was with his best friend. Being with her was as easy as pie. Or cake in this case. It was a weird but not bad feeling.
Jamie sighed dramatically. “I guess cake will do miss.” He broke the act and smiled. He wanted to give her a hug but he still felt unsure about the feeling earlier. He spotted the cake mix and his goofy grin grew bigger. “That’s like my all time favorite!” he said. He grabbed her hand and pointed forward. “Onto the kitchen!” he shouted in a very comic hero voice. He nearly ran the whole way to the oven. Quickly he set the temperature and then turned around. J was still with him despite his hyper speed. He decided to take the annoyingly long time that the oven took to heat up to test a hug. So without warning, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him. Then that feeling happened again. It wasn’t bad at all. He tried to think of words to describe it but only thought of that one blonde chick singer he liked who occasionally had a uke. Bubbly. It did feel bubbly. Like warm soda pop was coursing through his veins. Ew, warm soda pop sounded gross. That thought made him realize that he’d been hugging J longer than he usually did. Yet, she didn’t let go. And he didn’t want to. The eventual beep of the ready oven pulled him away from her and broke the silence. “I guess we should get started,”Jamie said less hyper than before.
He tried to remember the lyrics to that song. Some about how he made her smile. J definitely did that.

“I guess cake will do miss.”
Jemissa laughed. Jamie did the best impressions. Well, not that she really remembered him doing that many impressions, but still. If he did them more often, she was sure that they'd be the best impressions ever. Because he was Jamie. Yeah.
“That’s like my all time favorite!”
Jemissa laughed again. It was kind of the same girly giggle as before, except on a little bit of a lower scale of embarassment. Oh well. Her cheeks were nearly glowing red, but that was okay. "Of course it's your favorite, silly. It's Funfetti." She expected him to like funfetti, because it fit his personality so well. And who cared that it may have technically been meant for kids? Psh, whatever. She would eat this cake forever.
“Onto the kitchen!”
She followed him, still holding on but stumbling to keep up. Yeah, no she wasn't the athletic type. Something had to be done or she would lose him, so she tuged on his hand to slow him down even the tiniest bit and jumped on his back. She loved piggyback rides, and was sure Jamie wouldn't mind. She only weighed like, not a lot. Jemissa wasn't sure what she weighed; she just knew she was short and scrawny and had long legs. Like a cricket, she was tiny. Speaking of, Jiminy appeared to still be missing. Hmm. Jemissa rather enjoyed his company, even if he was a bit touchy sometimes.
Once they got to the kitchen, Jemissa hopped off Jamie's back (is there a way to even word that without it sounding wrong?) and set out everything needed for the cake.
“I guess we should get started.”
Jemissa nodded. She was so excited right now. Not even excited.... she felt something. It could only be described in that song though...
So she started to quietly sing it while she got everything together. Which wasn't weird for her; she often sang when she thought of asong or otherwise said something weird.
"It starts in my toes Makes me crinkle my nose Wherever it goooooes I always know That you make me smile Even just for a while..."

Jamie laughed wholeheartedly when J jumped onto his back. One because she weighed less than nothing, and two because he loved giving piggyback rides. It reminded him of being little and playing chicken in the community pool. J had a way of making him think of all the good things from his past. When she let go and readied everything he got a chance to look around. So that’s what this place looked like when you weren’t baked. Not that he would say that out loud. He was still wondering what J thought of his habits. She wasn’t one to tell him outright so he really didn’t want to make her. It was the first time he was really worried about what someone thought of him. Of course finding out that he used to be in a gang didn’t make her leave so it probably wouldn’t matter that much.
He started to here singing and wondered if his phone was going off. It wasn’t until he moved over closer to J to look at the cake box (though he had the instructions memorized by now) that he realized she was singing. He’d never heard her sing before so it made him do a double take. Even though she was singing softly, Jamie could tell she had a good voice. Her voice made his heart flutter a little and he paused trying to listen. J was a thankfully oblivious of his listening and continued to sing. It was then that Jamie realized that it was the song he was thinking of. A huge grin spread across his face and he sang along in a lower octave. He hadn’t really sang in a while. But just like he said, J tended to bring out his finer qualities.

As Jemissa got out the pan needed for the cake, she didn't realize Jamie had even heard her before he started to sing along. Something about his singing made her feel all... well, all bubbly, and warm and fuzzy inside. It made her forget all the bad things he was involved in, not that she allowed herself to think about those things often, but it made them matter less. Which was an odd way of putting it, but oh well. Not to mention his voice kind of melded with hers perfectly.
Once she finished the verse or chorus or whatever she was on, she smiled and laughed. "Omg! You know the song too!" she said, realizing that that song was a little old, though it had been popular and one of those they played on the radio 84572395873 times a day. Still smiling, because not smiling around Jamie only occured when he wasn't listening to her, and that didn't happen often enough to really count. Oh no, negative thoughts. Must. Block. Out.
Jemissa pulled some cooking spray out of the cabinet and sprayed the pan, which was a lot harder than it looked. Okay, so she didn't have the best hand-eye coordination and the spray went a little bit on thew coutners. Well it went everywhere. Seriously, the range on the spray part was waaay larger than it should have been. Turning to Jamie and pulling off a bad poker face, she realized that there was way too much spray and the cake would be all gross. Ewww.
"Well. Spray? Not a good idea," she said, and put the can away, instead getting out shortening and flour. She always liked that method better anyways, as you didn't have to deal with illegit spray cans. The shortening part was easy. But the flour...
Yeah, so Jemissa had a bit of a devious side. Jiminy didn't like it, but she didn't care. Because her being 'devious' meant planning small and nondestructive pranks on her close friends. So honestly, Jamie shouldn't have been all that surprised when she decided to initiate a little war.
It was a large bin of flour, so no one would notice if Jemissa took a pinch and flicked the legal white powder in Jamie's direction. And so she did, with a little evilish-looking-half-smile and a two finger salute, awaiting his response.
notes; And so it begins.

"Omg! You know the song too!" “Heh, yeah,” he said. He felt his face get warm and realized he was blushing. Not many people could do this to Jamie. In fact, Jamie almost never go embarrassed. What was it about J that made him feel this way. Was it her smile? He looked at her as she busied herself with the cooking. Her smile made him feel all warm and tingly. Especially when he was making her smile.
Or maybe her eyes. When she looked into his it felt like she was reading his mind. It wouldn’t surprise him if she was. Being magic and all.
It was the way he felt about her, he decided. He’d never admit it out loud but he liked her more than he should. It made him uncomfortable to thing about and embarrassed to feel. He knew that feeling the way he did would eventually ruin their friendship. Or maybe it wouldn’t. Love was never a good thing. He found that out the hard way with Cleo. Now he was going to be stupid again. Jamie hated when he thought about the future. He needed to live in the here and now. He can worry about his feelings when he accidentally blurts it out while sleeping. It’s not like he hasn’t done that before.
Deep in thought, Jamie didn’t realize what J was doing until it was too late. Flour covered his face and shirt. He looked up to see her evil grin and got one of his own. He stuck his hand in the bag of flour and grabbed a huge clump. Within seconds, it was all over J.
“You’re looking pale today J! Maybe you’re sick!” he said between snickers. This was living in the present. This is what he loved.

Jemissa expected retaliation, but not this much retaliation. She had known it was a good idea to put on an old t-shirt, but not in this sense. Because she was covered in flour now. It was all over her face and hair and shirt and some ever got on her pants and shoes. Well, feet, since she was wearing flip-flops.
“You’re looking pale today J! Maybe you’re sick!”
Awwww snap. Oh no he didn't. This was war now.
Jemissa smiled and jumped over the counter to the adjacent kitchen, getting out another bin of flour. She needed her own supply of ammo and cover, because she totally knew the basics of battle tactics. She had been in snow ball fights before, and was pretty good at them, considering they weren't physical fights that required fists. Honestly, when it came to projectiles, she had pretty good aim.
So when she through a clump of flour at Jamie from behind the counter, it went pretty well in her foe's direction. "Really? Well I hope you don't catch it!" she said as flour went all over Jamie. Did she mention she was also good at cheesy banter?
Jemissa still wanted cake, but it really didn't matter now. Because at this rate the cake would never get done. But that was okay, because she loved playing childish games like this with Jamie. It made her feel young again, since her childhood was spent in Solo cups and little orange bottles.

"Really? Well I hope you don't catch it!"
And then he was covered in flour. Jamie couldn’t help but chase after her and wrap his arms around her. He, of course, shook his flour covered hair all over J and laid his head on her shoulder. The laughter from both of them slowly died down and Jamie stood there not wanting to let go. What was he feeling? J was his best friend. They were pals. Why did it feel like something more? This wasn’t right! He couldn’t--he wouldn’t. Jamie let go quickly and looked at the floor.
“Well... this is gonna suck to clean up,” he said into the silence. “Screw that for now though! Let’s make cake!”
He looked at the back of the box again box couldn’t really read it. His mind was too busy racing at the speed of light. He could barely pick out all of his thoughts but he definitely knew what he was feeling. He would never say it out loud though. J seemed so fragile. He really couldn’t imagine breaking her heart. It was like stepping on a kitten or kicking a puppy. Just beyond wrong. He had to learn to keep quiet and just be a friend. A best friend even! Jamie took a deep breath and turned around.
“I have no idea what I’m looking at,” he said with silly wide eyes.

After running a very little bit, Jemissa accepted the hug and the flour. Yeah, they both totally looked like they were trying to be ghosts on Halloween and it wasn't working out very well. She laughed and laughed until she almost forgot about air, then calmed down, breathing. Breathing was a good thing, yes. Of course, she was aware of how close her and Jamie were to each other, but she didn't mind. She didn't care that co-ed best friends weren't supposed to be like this, or that she kind of felt like they should be more than friends, she just wanted to be close to Jamie. To protect him, despite being so small. She wished they could stay like this forever.
Then Jamie let go and looked down at the floor.
She sighed internally, knowing that the real world didn't offer that kind of refuge, as much as she liked to think about it that way sometimes, but her face still stayed in that bright smile of happiness. As long she still had him as a friend or companion or something else, she still had him, and that was okay.
Okay.
"Pfft, yeah. Cleaning up is for after we make the cake, duh." She rolled her eyes, still smiling, and looked around. ...Yeah, that was a lot of flour. Uhm. Cake! Yeah, cake was a good thing to think about now. Put the flour off until later. Cleaning wasn't exactly Jemissa's forte.
"Lemme see," she said, grabbing the box from him, though not with an attitude. "Okay, just gotta put this in there..." Eventually, Jemissa got all the ingredients in the bowl except one. She handed the plastic container to Jamie. "Here, you can put in the sprinkles." Smiling, she looked at all the rainbow colors, thinking that it wouldn't be much of a Funfetti cake without the Funfetti. The reason she didn't get the Pilsbury Funfetti is that the cake itself always ended up dry and gross. This way, it could be colorful and delicious!

Jamie watched J work her magic and just kind of stared. He wasn’t a terrible cook but most everything he made was from a box with instructions. He was pretty sure if her went outside the box then the meal would catch on fire and shit would hit the fan. Not exactly the best thing. Then again, didn’t some cook serve meals on fire?
Being his usually distracted self he pulled out his phone and commented. “This cake party needs music.” He set his iPhone to shuffle and made some pretty ridiculous dance moves while J mixed her potion of deliciousness. It wasn’t until he was handed sprinkles did he stop.
"Here, you can put in the sprinkles."
“Yuuuuuus!” he cheered making a fist and pumping it in the air. “Sprinkles!” He poured them slowly into the concoction and whispered, “Raaaaaaaainbows.” into J’s ear. The last of them fell in and cheered yet again. Maybe there was sugar vapor in the air and he was inhaling it or maybe it was just hanging with J, but either way he was super hyper. Though he didn’t mind being silly as long as it made her smile.
Just as he was about to throw away the little plastic thing, his song came on. Well, one of his songs. The sound of his own voice always kinda made him feel weird for some reason. This one was called Piggybank and he didn’t really want to hear it. Okay, he also didn’t want anyone to here it. Not just anyone but J. She didnt know his past; she only knew him right here, right now. It’s like his shirt spoke to his iPhone and decided to troll. Why did he even have that on his iTunes still? It was silly to even get so worked up but he was embarrassed for some reason. He jumbled for his phone and nearly dropped it trying to switch the song. “Noooot, that song,” he mumbled switching to some random Lady Gaga song that had a good beat. His cheeks were actually kind of red. How silly.

Jemissa totally did not mind the music, and danced a little while he was mixing and pouring, careful not to spill. She loved Jamie's music and was totally jamming out while he put the sprinkles in and almost started singing to some of the songs. She also loved how the sprinkles stained the batter around them, making rainbows in the cake like Jamie had whispered into her ear.
The smile on her face refreshed and brightened a bit, though really, it was never ending, wasn't it? When she was with Jamie, she couldn't help but smile all the time at everything he did and was. It was a bit ridiculous, but Jemissa never once minded ridiculous. She never at all minded Jamie or that fact that she spent a ridiculous amount of time with him, either, for that matter.
Jiminy appeared on her shoulder, dangerously close to Jamie, but she knew he couldn't see him. He was skeptical about this whole cake business, but then again, Jiminy was skeptical about everything when he was grumpy, which was all the time. He held on to her hair as she put the cake into the oven, excited for how it would turn out (awesome, she was sure).
Then the song changed and Jemissa paused. The voice sounded familiar, but no, it couldn't be Jamie...? She eyed him as skeptically as the cricket had, but only for a moment before he changed the song. His cheeks were red as Lady Gaga blared from his iPod and Jemissa frowned. She hated when things ot a little awkward like this. The best thing she could do was ignore it, right? So she put on a smile again and giggled. "I love this song!" And she started to dance, hoping Jamie would join her. Though he was probably a better dancer than her. For all the agility in her legs, her arms didn't do much as far as graceful movement.

Jamie sighed in relief. J didn’t notice. That would have led to a lot of questions that he didn’t want to give answers to. Steps back into the past, that he didn’t want to take. Even if it was just for two minutes in thirty seconds. J just move on to the next song not saying a word; instead she began to dance to the music. She was done with the batter? That meant... The cake was baking! He was about to go and turn the little baker’s light on but instead got distracted by J’s dancing. The way her hair swished back in forth, her glee filled smile that reached her wide excited eyes moved him. He stood there and watched for almost a minute while his heart did flip flops worse than well... flip flops. He couldn’t explain it better even if his head wasn’t in a tizzy.
Just like any other shuffle on his iPhone a completely unrelated song came on. A slow song that he secretly loved. Nora Jones. Come Away with Me. As a kid with nothing but street sounds and his few cds to put him to sleep, he was happy to have the singer. That was until the guys found it and played bash-it-with-a-hammer in the street. It was stupid but thankfully he’d gotten enough money to buy it again during his withdrawal. This song was his favorite to listen to.
Taking a few steps forward, Jamie smiled at J and held out his hand. "May I have this dance?" he asked in a poor made British accent. A shy smile grace his lips as he did. When J accepted, his other hand wrapped around her thin waist. It felt perfect in a way. In that moment, they danced. Jamie hummed along with the song, still wanting to hear the music. He looked down into J’s eyes. He was dreaming; that smile was for him but he was dreaming.
notes;; apparently my writing gets better with the less sleep I have

Jemissa loved it when the music suddenly changed. Metaphorically and literally. On her iPod, she liked putting it on auto-crossfade and listen to the interesting mixes going on between songs. It was best when the songs were the complete opposite. And going from Lady Gaga to... Norah Jones? That was pretty darn opposite.
She expected Jamie to change the song, but instead he held out his hand and asked her to dance. Jemissa actually blushed and smiled, giggling a bit. "Why, certainly, good sir," she replied in an equally-as-bad British accent. Her mom was British,so she could have pulled it off, but she didn't want to cheat. That would be mean.
Jiminy sighed and rolled his eyes and Jemissa had enough. She flicked him off her shoulder, making it look like she was just brushing some excess flower off, and wrapped herself around Jamie and danced. At first, she looked up at his face, and knew he was happy. She smiled, couldn't stop smiling, and listened to the words of the song.
"Come away with me in the night Come away with me and I will write you a song Come away with me on a bus Come away where there can't tempt us with their lies."
The lyrics were so perfect with what was happening that she almost cried. Instead, she got closer to him and leaned her head against his chest. She imagined she could hear his heart beating, hear him breathe like his shirt said. She wished this moment could last forever. But the song changed to something not made for slow-dancing, so she looked back up at him and smiled, then pulled away to check on the cake. There was still a long way to go, but she wanted to make sure the oven wasn't fluking and the cake wasn't burning, or something.
