...personal*
personality Abel has had some bad experiences in the past that have messed up his mind permanently. He has a way of talking that seems almost like he doesn’t know that he is talking out loud. But, then again, maybe he really doesn’t. Abel’s drug riddled mind tends to think strange, often frightening thoughts, and often voices them to the people near him. He also doesn’t seem to know how to speak at a normal volume; usually it’s either barely more than a whisper, or a yell. Most of the time, he is just trying to scare people away – his thoughts are comprehensible in his mind, to him anyway. Most people are quite frightened of him; he is very rough looking, because he lives on the streets. The things he does would be more expected out of a senile old man than someone barely twenty.
Abel hates a lot of things, and acts upon that hatred. One of the things that he hates is springtime. Springtime only reminds Abel that everything is moving forward – he keeps living this awful, boring, pointless life year after year. At least life was exciting when the whole Mafia ordeal was happening, but that didn’t end up well. Because he hates springtime, Abel also possesses a very strong hatred for anything that reminds him of springtime – especially flowers. Abel detests flowers. Those awful, sickly sweet smells, and the colorful leaves that try to draw people in, just so they can smell the terrible, terrible scent. Abel cannot seem to escape this world of time and place, where people hate him as soon as they see him.
The only escape Abel has from this world is music. Whenever he plays his harp, he feels the strangest feeling inside him. He just wanted to cry, or scream, or destroy all of the other sounds and people in the world, just so he would be alone with the music. When he plays his harp in the street, sitting on his lonely folding chair, some people try to give him money, but he doesn’t care about it. Sometimes he even bares his teeth at them or yells to get them to leave.
Abel doesn’t take well to people. When he meets other homeless people in the street, he sometimes tries to talk to them, but he eventually gets so annoyed with their calmness and kindness that most of the time he just smacks them or pinches their nose and runs away. It seems to him that everyone has ganged up against him. Nobody talks to him or tries to help him, or even does anything to get rid of him. No one really knew what to think of him – a young man, living in the streets, smacking everyone he talks to, and playing his harp. No one knew what was going on inside Abel’s head except him – and even he wasn’t really too sure.
pastAbel was born in New Jersey, but he doesn’t really remember it. As he was growing up, he never had a good education; he was supposed to be homeschooled by his parents, but they never did anything. His parents were very neglecting, leaving empty cans of beer all over the house and leaving, sometimes for days at a time, to go out to parties, or whatever it was they went to. They never taught him anything – not anything good anyway. He used to be able to read, but forgot how around the time he turned twelve. That was also the time when he began the process that would lead him to insanity.
It’s not like he was pressured into doing anything he did, but he found that drugs and alcohol gave his mind a break from all his troubles. He started off just smoking cigarettes and drinking the beer his parents left sitting on the floor. After deciding that he liked this kind of stuff, he started doing other, harder drugs like heroin and coke. They riddled his brain with senseless pockets, so he couldn’t really comprehend anything very well. When he began needed a bigger supply of drugs, he became involved with some shady and unscrupulous people, specifically the Mafia.
Everyone knew about the Mafia, especially Abel because of his…well… ‘connections’. He started buying drugs from one of the lieutenants and became almost friends with him. Well, more like acquaintances. Ultimately, Abel had been accumulating a large debt to this lieutenant and was not able to pay it off. He didn’t really know what to do, so before he was killed he decided to run away. Abel packed up his things, which were few, and put his harp in its case. The night of his escape, a mere sixteen year old, he took a dirty knife from the kitchen sink, and killed his father and mother with it.
Abel never felt any remorse for what he did; his parents were barely family to him – barely even humans. The only thing he could do then was run. He ran to New York, not really sure what it would be like, but he grew his hair and lost some weight, hoping to disguise himself from the Mafia. He was now living in New York City, on the streets, alone with his harp and his drugs, bought from the scarce money he collected while playing music.
present Abel McCain lives in New York City. Well, he doesn’t technically ‘live’ there, he resides there. Abel doesn’t really live anywhere – he has no home, just a couple cardboard boxes and a folding chair. He hides his harp in the boxes so nobody steals it – lord knows it would be worth a lot of money. But Abel would never sell it; partly because it wouldn’t occur to him what he could do with the money, and partly because he just needs it. He plays the harp every day, sitting in his rickety folding chair. He doesn’t know how to read music or anything like that – he never did. Abel just played whatever strings sounded good together.
The beautiful sound of his harp was kind of lost though, with all the bustle of the city. Abel himself was really the only one who appreciated it as much as he could; it was everything to him. When people were mad at him, he just ignored them and played his harp.
One person in particular was especially livid because of some things that Abel had done. See, Abel hates flowers. Down the road from where Abel keeps his boxes and sleeps, there is a big room filled with flowers. Abel is pretty sure that this place is called something like a ‘sore’, because he has heard some people talking about things like it in passing. Except that these ‘sores’ that he heard people talking about were not filled with flowers, but with other things, like clothes or food. Sometimes Abel went into the store and put rocks in all the flowers, or spat all over the counter. Sometimes, when he could get his hands on it, Abel painted the flowers. The man who seemed to live in that big room full of flowers always got so angry when he saw what had happened, but Abel was sure that he had never been seen; he always waited until the flower man had gone to vandalize the big room. This kind of thing gave Abel pleasure – making people angry, that is.
family Abel had only ever had a father and mother…but they weren’t around anymore. No siblings, no pets, no children. Abel was all alone.

other notes Abel would do basically anything to get a hold of drugs, but he could never really think of any good plans. In order to eat, Abel occasionally steals from the street vendors, but usually just kills mice and eats them. He has been to the homeless shelter, and used to go there often so he could eat, but he was banned due to his extremely violent behavior.

book title Beowulf, and Grendel (by John Gardner)
backstory In Beowulf, Grendel is the first monster Beowulf fights. Grendel is impervious to weapons but is defeated by Beowulf. In the book 'Grende' by John Gardner, Grendel is personified as the protagonist of the story. In the story, Grendel has been around for so many years that he is absolutely sick of it. Everything is extremely boring to him and he does nothing more than scream and kill people. He spends his time breaking into the meadhouse in the village and brutally eating the sleeping people whole. He is able to speak the same language as the humans, but most of them don't understand it. Grendel tries talking to his mother, but she does not know how to speak -- she is nothing more than a beast. In the end, when Grendel is defeated by Beowulf, his last words are him wishing ill upon all the creatures of the earth.
