Clarissa nodded, “alright. Sounds like a good idea. My feet hurt from walking anyway.” Clarissa let Zirconium lead for the most part, unsure of where they would sit anyway. Her clothes still felt kind of wet and it made her a bit self-conscious. She was worried people would stare or something, thinking ‘what the hell happened to her?’Clarissa didn’t like when people thought about her, much less when they thought negative things. Bashful was teaching her to care less but it wasn’t working out all that well, evidently. Clarissa looked to wear Zirconium was and smiled. “That is adorable,” she agreed. It may have sounded weird but Clarissa loved seeing kids at the mall, with their parents. Families were fun to watch. Was that creepy? Clarissa took the initiative and sat at a nearby empty table. She set her pretzel down and stretched. It had been a long day.
“It’s nice being at the mall with somebody,” she said suddenly, smiling at Zirconium. “It’s going to sound odd, but thanks for pushing me into the fountain.” Clarissa laughed, scratching the back of her neck. “I would have had to go shopping otherwise.” Clarissa realized she wasn’t making sense. She took a bite of her pretzel to keep quiet lest anything else embarrassing make it out. It’s as if all my lessons are flying out the window. You’re being awkward and self-conscious. It’s pissing me off, darling. Please stop being so—’ Bashful mentally gestured to all of her. Wow, thanks. She answered sarcastically, his comment making her more bold than unconfident. “I’m not good with small talk,” Clarissa offered, “incase you hadn’t noticed.”

Zirconium laughed when Clarissa thanked her for pushing her into the fountain. She couldn’t exactly say she was glad she’d done it – it would have been nice for them to have met some other way that didn’t include her embarrassing herself – but she knew what Clarissa meant.
“Well, I’m not going to say you’re welcome,” Zirconium said, still smiling from her laughter, “because that would just make me sound really awful. But yeah, it’s nice to actually be with someone in the mall. I’d rather be doing this than shopping with my mom.” She was still kind of wondering why Clarissa was being so vague about who she was at the mall with, and who would have made her go shopping. As far as Zirconium could see, Clarissa was alone. But at least-
Zzzzzz. Zzzzzz. Zirconium could feel her cell phone vibrating in her purse.
“Oh, sorry, hold on. This is probably my mom.” She reached inside her bag and flipped open her phone.
“Hello?” She said, glancing at Clarissa and then down at the floor.
”Hey Zee. Have you finished your lunch yet? I want you to come meet me here as soon as you can. I’ve found this charming little sofa that would just look lovely in our family room. I just want to get a second opinion before I buy it, and then we’ll go, okay?”
As much as she really didn’t want to go and look at sofas with her mother, Zirconium was admittedly sort of glad her mom wanted her. It had been nice meeting Clarissa, and, er… not nice pushing her into a fountain, but talking to her at least. Their conversation was just awkward and forced at that point, though; she didn’t want to ruin any sort of possible friendship with an even weirder and more awkward first impression than the one she’d already made.
“Okay, uh, where?”
”Pottery Barn, sweetie.”
“Alright, I’ll be there in a sec,” she replied, clicking End on her phone.
“Okay, my mom apparently needs my input on her choice of sofas. So, it was nice meeting you.” Zirconium laughed. “I guess I’ll see you in school on Monday.” She turned to walk away, waving to her new, well, not friend exactly, yet anyway. But definitely a potential one. Her clumsiness had finally led her to something good.
