Getting out of Guillermo's car, Rose was still laughing. The two were returning from a night of poker with Hiro, Hiro's older sister Misa, and Stefano; and Guillermo had effectively robbed them blind. "Did you see their faces when you pulled out that Royal Flush!? I though Hiro was going to cry!"
Rose laughed, wiping a tear from her eye. It had honestly made Rose's week, seeing the self proclaimed card-shark get his ass handed to him. It had even been worth the third grade snickers coming from her co-workers, who seemed to have acquired a taste for teasing Rose about her and Guillermo's friendship.
Laying her head on Guillermo's shoulder, she pouted her lip a little, batting her big, blue, eyes. "You're going to give me my money back though, right?" She was giddy, which was odd for the generally blasse Rose.
Her brown hair fell wildly around her face, framing her freckled face. Her outfits seemed mostly black and white, save the cherry red lipstick on her lips. Rose's tank shirt was striped black and white, only just short enough not to be considered a dress. On her legs were snug fitting leather pants, with zippery black leather high heels, and a matching coat. Hoop earrings and a rosary around her neck, for accessories. It was another one of those things that Hiro and Stefano snickered about, as her usual poker attire consisted of a pair of old jeans and a sweatshirt.
Climbing up the stares, she flashed Guillermo a suggestive smile, her teeth looking especially white in contrast to the red lips. Heading up the stairs silently, she could honestly say her mind jumped topic almost immediately. "Wha-?" Her mouth fell open, her eyes widened.
Seth stood against her door, considerably more mature than when she had last saw him. Rose was frozen, besides the small smile creeping on to her face slowly. "Seth?" She asked finally, as if unsure.

"Did you see their faces when you pulled out that Royal Flush!? I though Hiro was going to cry!" He grinned in memory of Hiro's pale face stretching as his jaw dropped. It had taken a while for his friends to console him, all the time staring with wounded eyes as if Guillermo had played him. He hadn't played the guy. He merely pwned him. Rose shook with laughter, wiping at her eyes, wet with mirth. He kept shooting sideways glances at her, enjoying the very happy Rose that had been in his company for the evening. Guillermo couldn't help but laugh along with Stefano and Hiro's jokes at his own expense. The way Rose avoided dating like the plague was pretty contradictory to how she acted, dressed and everything when he was along. Or so Stefano said. She laid her coppery hair on his shoulder, giving him the puppy-dog eyes, "You're going to give me my money back though, right?" "Hey now! You can't use that on me! I've been using that since before you were born, chica." She looked so enticing though, that he considered offering to give her the money back; in exchange for a night in his apartment, of course. She opened her beautiful lips and looked as if she were about to say something, when something else caught her eye. "Wha-?" A boy near her age, if not older, stood leaning against her door. He was obviously waiting for her. Guillermo had to choke down the slight growl of disapproval. Something about this guy was off. He had half a mind to push Rose behind him and shield her. "Seth?" A smile crept to her face and Guillermo put his head down a little, shaking the hair into his face to roll his eyes without her noticing. Of course.

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - She was beautiful, just like he remembered. No, more. She had actually gotten more beautiful. Seth hadn't even thought that to be possib-
WHO THE HELL WAS THAT?
Behind HIS angel, behind the girl he had been dreaming about for the past six years, was some tall slag beaner JACKOFF. Oh, how sad, he wasn't pleased to see Seth either. No, no, no. Rose was his jewel. He would not share, HE WOULD NOT. But... it would be better not to make a scene, wouldn't it? She'd think he was the same punk as before, if Seth didn't keep his cool. So he looked back at Rose, keeping calm, smiling at her coolly as she said his name.
Damn, what a good sound.
"Hey Chicken Little, the sky falling?" He asked, referring to their old greeting. Rose needed to know! Needed to know that he never forgot her. Of course, to most, the daily letters would be a hint, but it wasn't enough to Seth. No, he wanted to prove it more. "Well, how about a hug?" He asked, spreading his arms open, ready to receive her.
Seth's eyes shot over to the intruder, and though his smile was friendly and amiable, his eyes were like a rabid dog. Yes, when Rose around, Seth would be a perfect gentlemen. No need to upset her, or Seth's parole officer. But that didn't mean he couldn't get this schmuck to hit him first. Oh, it'd be lovely. Rose frantic to help him, to nurse him. The fantasy softened his eyes considerably.

"Hey Chicken Little, the sky falling?" It was him! She covered her mouth, wondering how this night could get any better. Winning the lottery? Being the sole heir to an amazing shoe store? Nothing short of that would make Rose happier right now.
Finally, she managed to choke out: "i dunno, Foxy Loxy, you tell me."
"Well, how about a hug?" Running forward, she embraced her Brother from another Mother. How long had it been? Six years? That's right, he had just turned fourteen when he stole that stupid car. Rose had warned him not too. But that wasn't the point! He was back! Guilt hit her, as Rose was aware that she was not as dedicated to writing him as he had been for her.
Looking over at Guillermo, she suddenly realized how this looked. "This is Seth. He use to live next door to me. He was my best friend." She laughed, punching Seth in the arm. "When did you get out, you Sonnofabitch? Way to give me a heads up!" Unlocking her front door, she wondered how long Seth had been standing there. Or even how he got in... Only residents were allowed in the building, or the guests of residents. Opening it up, she waved Guillermo to come in.
They would like each other, she was sure.

He did not like this guy. Especially when he opened his mouth "Hey Chicken Little, the sky falling?" What the hell? "I dunno, Foxy Loxy, you tell me," Rose replied back, naturally and playfully. "Well, how about a hug?" She rushed forward into the guy's arms and Guillermo had to bite back the snarl again. Obviously they knew each other, but he found it a little sketchy how he had been waiting outside her door. He felt his insides squirm as he thought about how perhaps this was another guy with whom she might have the same arrangement as him and her. "This is Seth. He use to live next door to me. He was my best friend." Guillermo gave a nod of acknowledgement, but couldn't speak. Rose punched the guy teasingly, "When did you get out, you Sonnofabitch? Way to give me a heads up!" Get out? What was going on? He disliked this guy more by the minute. He forced his mind into submission. Okay, he didn't know this Seth guy. But it was Rose's friend, so he was probably an okay dude, right? He entered Rose's apartment with her, deciding that he wouldn't judge Seth just yet. His mind was still uneasy though. Guillermo saw the odd glint in Seth's eyes.

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Her smell, that was what made Seth's knees buckle slightly as she embraced him. She smelled like candy, cigarettes, vanilla, cologne. His eyes trailed up to Guillermo, and he wondered if this bloke was the source. Well if he was, then he didn't deserve to be! What kind of guy could just sit their while their girl hugs another guy? A bitch, that's who. This would be easy, Seth could feel it.
"This is Seth. He use to live next door to me. He was my best friend." Was? Was?! Who was her best friend now? Behind his carefully placed smile, he was roaring inside. No! NO NO NO NO NO NO! Best friend was the only place he had ever had with Rose. She couldn't have a best friend who wasn't him! It wasn't fair! It wasn't fair! Was he so easily replaced? It wasn't like he had been gone for twenty year! Only six, for christ sakes, where was her loyalty? Snapping back in reality, he looked up at her as she punched his arm. "When did you get out, you Sonnofabitch? Way to give me a heads up!"
It was a punch that eased him a bit. Things were the same as before. Everything was fine. And soon they would be better. "About five hours ago. I went to your parent's place, but they said you moved out. I ended up getting pointed in this direction." He smiled at her, sheepishly. "I wanted to surprise you. Would have brought flowers, but I kinda spent it all on the cab." He purposely inserted he was broke, in hopes she'd let him crash here tonight.
She unlocked the door, waving for Guillermo to join them. WHAT THE HELL! She could see this fuck whenever she damn well pleased, SETH on the other hand had just gotten out of jail! She should be dying to spend some quailty time.
Easy, easy, easy.
All this meant was that he could get rid of the Puss faster, that was all. No problem. Seth entered the apartment, filled with the smell of girl. His girl.
Looking over at Guillermo, he stuck out his hand, the perfect gentlemen. "Hey man. You Chicken's latest?" He laughed a thick belly laugh, as if unaware that he had just blew Guillermo off as basically a toy. One of the rest. Because that's all he was to Seth. Just another one of Rose's mistakes.

"About five hours ago. I went to your parent's place, but they said you moved out. I ended up getting pointed in this direction. I wanted to surprise you. Would have brought flowers, but I kinda spent it all on the cab." Rose rolled her eyes in good rumor, flipping on her light.
"Master planner, as always Seth." She looked around her apartment, picking up the cloths that were strewn around it. Her furniture was nice, a bit above her means, and chic. The pull out couch was out, as it was where she usually slept, given that her bed was covered with even more cloths. "Make yourselves at home, you guys want a beer." She headed to the kitchen, without waiting for a reply, opening her fridge and pulling out two drinks for the fellas.
Her stomach almost dropped as she heard Seth-no-tact greet Guillermo. "Hey man. You Chicken's latest?" Coming around the corner, she handed Seth's drink to him roughly, basically punching him in the gut.
"Do I have a neon sign on my head that says 'TALK ABOUT MY ROSE'S SEX LIFE'?" She smiled, handing Guillermo his drink, rolling her eyes as if to say 'Whatever'. "And for your information, Seth, I can have guy friends who I don't sleep with." She held Guillermo's arm, balancing herself to remove her shoes. "The fact that I am sleeping with him is not the point, don't just jump to the conclusion, Jerk." Sticking out her tongue, she left the conversation at that, and went to fold up the pull out couch so they had someplace to sit.

"About five hours ago. I went to your parent's place, but they said you moved out. I ended up getting pointed in this direction. I wanted to surprise you. Would have brought flowers, but I kinda spent it all on the cab." In other words, he was broke. Guillermo knew how this worked. You're broke, you go find your best friend. He'd done it before. Only to have the best friend slam the door in his face. He tried not to be hopeful for that same outcome, but found himself disappointed as she returned Seth's comment with banter. "Master planner, as always Seth. Make yourselves at home, you guys want a beer." She stepped into the kitchen and Seth held out his hand to Guillermo. "Hey man. You Chicken's latest?" Guillermo let a grin creep onto his face. Okay, maybe this guy was alright. "Apparently. She's the one calling the shots, anyway." Rose walked back in with a slight scowl. "Do I have a neon sign on my head that says 'TALK ABOUT MY ROSE'S SEX LIFE'? And for your information, Seth, I can have guy friends who I don't sleep with." She balanced herself with his arm as she took her shoes off and he felt comforted by her touch. What had he been thinking. It was just her friend. He was probably similar to Stefano and Hiro, only more like Rose. "The fact that I am sleeping with him is not the point, don't just jump to the conclusion, Jerk." She stuck out her tongue and he felt a bit of pride at the openness of her comment. She wouldn't tell just anyone straight out that they were screwing on the side. He offered Seth a small genuine smile.

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Guillermo made Seth's skin crawl. "Apparently. She's the one calling the shots, anyway." Seth's eyes hardened, but he kept the smile in place. Don't bend. Rose came back up to them, shoving his beer into his gut in her rough manner. He grinned at her, not quite sorry. "Do I have a neon sign on my head that says 'TALK ABOUT MY ROSE'S SEX LIFE'? And for your information, Seth, I can have guy friends who I don't sleep with." Ah, he had been worried for nothing. They were just friends. True, that made Guillermo his replacement, but that could be easily fix- "The fact that I am sleeping with him is not the point, don't just jump to the conclusion, Jerk."
His heart cracked. Figuratively, but the pain was real. His chest sincerely hurt. He looked back at Guillermo, who smiled at him smugly. Seth wanted to break that pretty little face. Smash it into pieces. Destroy it. He didn't like how she touched this spik, didn't like the way he relaxed at the touch. THOSE WERE HIS TOUCHES. Rose went off to make the living room more sittable, as Seth opened his beer and muttered. "Well, I hope you stick around. She gets bored awful easy." He didn't hope Guillermo stuck around. He wanted him to die. Die a painful, awful, horrible death; and just leave he and Rose be. He didn't deserve to be here. Guillermo hadn't earned it.
Taking a drink, he gave a vicious smile, before looking back up at Rose, back to playing the nice guy. "Let me help you with that." He headed over across the living room, assisting her with the pull out couch. Guillermo hadn't been so gentlemanly. It made Seth smirk, that he had gotten it first.
Rose would see. Seth was perfect for her.

They were getting along. It was amazing, to Rose, that Guillermo seemed to immerse so easily with her friends. Despite all their teasing, Hiro and Stefano liked him. They had even talked about them all having a boys night, leaving poor Rose out. Of course, their was the Mallory situation. Again, Guillermo immersing himself a little too well. And she didn't even want to think about how much her Uncle liked him. Every time she saw her dear Tio Fernando, it was always: "How is Guillermo? You should invite him over for Enchilada night. Blah blah blah." That was a little too close for comfort.
Rose's ears didn't pick up Seth's snarky little mutter, and she rolled her eyes at his offer to help. After all, she did it basically every day. But he was just anxious, having only just gotten out of jail and all. It was understandable. Fernando wouldn't be pleased that Seth was out, but he didn't understand him. It wasn't his fault that he was so... excitable. Despite his shaky record, Rose knew he was a good guy deep down.
Putting the cushions back on the couch, she sat down, happy to have her feet up. If she didn't look so fabulous in heels, she'd swear off those torture devises. "I'm not really Chicken Little anymore. Had that growth spurt about high school." Her voice had a very, 'Thank you very much' quality about it. Looking lazily over at Guillermo, she decided to explain. "It's a mixture of a few things. Apparently I worried too much," She kicked Seth lightly with her foot, ignoring the sting of the blister, and grinning. "Though I disagree. And I had horrible knobby legs. You should have seen me when I ran, it was just like a chicken." She scrunched her face in distaste at the memory, before it reformed a relax smile. Patting the seat next to her, she looked at Guillermo sweetly.
It made her nervous, how well tonight was going. Certainly something would go wrong soon. It always did.
Realizing that she was living up to the name 'Chicken Little' she shrugged off the ill feeling. No, everything was going perfect.

"Well, I hope you stick around. She gets bored awful easy." The tone was quiet and a bit teasing, but the message was real. The hairs on the back of his neck stood as Seth gave him a smile. It wasn't a natural smile. There was a slightly sinister quality to it. "Let me help you with that." said Seth as Rose pushed the bed back into the couch. "I'm not really Chicken Little anymore. Had that growth spurt about high school." She told Seth smugly, then looked at Guillermo. "It's a mixture of a few things. Apparently I worried too much. -insertplayfulkick- Though I disagree. And I had horrible knobby legs. You should have seen me when I ran, it was just like a chicken." Guillermo grinned at the mental image, unable to morph it with the Rose he knew. "I doubt it. You're much too graceful for that, Rose." She patted the seat and he sat down beside her, putting his arms on the back of the couch, his knees touching hers lightly from the close proximity. His eyes never left Seth.

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - He grinned as she explained the origin of 'Chicken Little'. "It's a mixture of a few things. Apparently I worried too much. Though I disagree. And I had horrible knobby legs. You should have seen me when I ran, it was just like a chicken." He laughed, as she kicked him, taking another swig of his beer, watching her closely. Almost as closely as Guillermo was watching him. It made him happy, the threat that Seth's presences made.
Guillermo sat down next to her, his knee touching hers. "I doubt it. You're much too graceful for that, Rose." Bastard. He was smooth alright. But Seth was smoother.
He laughed again, squeezing Rose's knee, trying to get it some distance from Guillermo's. "Oh no, you would be wrong. She had the skinniest knees on the block. And she was so damn sensitive about it, but I told her, I said: 'Rosie, Baby, you'll fill out, don't worry about it.'" His eyes scanned her briefly, grinning at his prediction. "Now look at her. Few girls could compare." He let his hand sit on her knee, smiling widely at her face.
It was an under exaggeration, of course. But she was far to modest to let him get away with 'no girl' which would have been closer to the truth. Lifting up his hand, he raised his eyebrows at Guillermo, as if they were having a silent conversation.
Truth be told, they kind of were.

Rose leaned on Guillermo slightly, when he sat down, stealing his beer and taking a sip. Not so much that she liked beer, nor really disliked it, but she was actually thirsty. A blush crept on her face, as the boys complimented her, trying to stay modest. Seth squeezed her knee familiarly, as she rolled her eyes. "Oh no, you would be wrong. She had the skinniest knees on the block. And she was so damn sensitive about it, but I told her, I said: 'Rosie, Baby, you'll fill out, don't worry about it.' Now look at her. Few girls could compare."
"Don't let him fool you. It wasn't so eloquent. More like, 'Rose, you'll get your t&a soon, quit freakin.'" She put the beer back in Guillermo's hand, bored with topic.
Rose's mind went to other places, not wanting to think about her 'awkward phase' as she remembered that she needed to get her mail. "Shit, I need to check my mailbox. I haven't in almost three days." She turned to Guillermo, slinking her hand into his pocket deftly and grabbing his keys. "I'll get your too, while I'm up." Without thinking about it, she kissed his cheek, before jumping off the couch.
Wait. Why had she done that? Her face looked a bit frazzled as she slipped on her house slipper, which looked ridiculous with her outfit, especially as she slid off her leather jacket. "Be right back. Mingle or whatever." She said over her shoulder, bolting out the door before she could think about the mysterious kiss on the cheek.
Things with her and Guillermo always seemed more complicated with her and him than there was meant to be.

Now look at her. Few girls could compare." His dark eyes scanned the guy as light eyes roamed Rose greedily. He wanted to disagree. Rose was definitely something else. He'd take her over any girl, any day. And he couldn't even say it because of the agreement they had. "Don't let him fool you. It wasn't so eloquent. More like, 'Rose, you'll get your t&a soon, quit freakin.'" He chuckled. That sounded much more like a real adolescent boy. "Oh come on, I bet he was nicer than that. He's your best friend after all," he reminded himself more than her. "Shit, I need to check my mailbox. I haven't in almost three days." Her hand slipped into his pocket and he grinned slyly at the sensation. "I'll get your too, while I'm up." She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. As she jumped away from the couch, he touched his hand to his face, a bit shocked. He felt an odd euphoria and stared assertively into Seth's pale eyes as Rose stepped out. "Be right back. Mingle or whatever." For some reason, he really wanted her to stay. When she left the room, it felt like a candle had been extinguished. Cold and dark.

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - He couldn't watch them be so... happy together. They looked like a couple. Even worse than the admission that they were in fact sleeping together, Rose kissed him on the cheek. Like they were together. It was disgusting. As she scampered out, sliding the coat down her limber body, he stared at the door, feeling the tension in the room.
It was palpable, and tasted like anger.
"She sure is something." Seth said, taking a drink of his beer, not taking his eyes off from the door for a very long moment. "She always has been. Something I mean. Sensitive, deep down too. You wouldn't know it. Bet she's a fucking cat in the sack... guess you would know that though..." He gave Guillermo a scathing look. "She really seems to like you. Well, don't get use to it. She always does." This wasn't exactly true. Actually, after the sex was completed, she was often apt to give the participator the boot. Guillermo didn't need to know that.
He was leaner than Seth, taller too. Was that Rose liked? No. Rose was above having a 'type'. "Alejandro, take it from me. I know from experience. She seems real sweet and cuddly now. But soon she'll get bored, and then she'll drop you in the trash like yesterday's newspaper. Poof, you'll be gone." Seth smiled twistedly, looking at his rival's eyes. "But you know what? I'll still be here. The faithful and loving friend. You'll be gone like Poof, and I'll be right here. So why not just leave with your dignity? Go mow a lawn or something..." Seth laughed, as if this was a joke. "Oh, I know you won't. It won't make a difference. All I need is time. And I gotta tell you, after six years, you learn to be pretty fucking patient."
Draining his beer, he tried to soak in any anger that Guillermo was feeling. "Don't bother tattling. I'm the contrite and redeemed childhood friend. You're just the guy she's fucking..." He cast a steel stare. "But by all means, if you want to hit me, do it. I'd love for it. I'm begging for it." He could picture Rose's anger at this, her dearest friend sprawled out on the floor, nursing a bloody nose. Or a black eye, perhaps. And Seth would look shocked, confused, insisting that all he had said was that she was a great girl. That the wild Spaniard pounced on him in a fit of jealous rage.
It was beautiful.
