personality
Naturally, Eric is shy. He only has a few friends, the most he'll allow himself to have unless he meets someone interesting. He prefers to stay off to the side than be in public, although it's not because he's shy. He's also very self-conscious, using whatever he can get his hands on to hide the growth on his face.
Along with being shy, he's also very sensitive. Being the stereotypical class loser, he's used to getting remarks made about him and his constant efforts to cover up his face, but more about that in the next section. In other words, Eric's not the most popular guy around. And he prefers it that way, too. Better to be unpopular and be satisfied with your life than to be popular and always want more. But that doesn't stop him from making himself known.
Eric can even come off as cruel to people he doesn't know or people who don't understand him. He isn't completely secretive all the time, and in the rare moments that he isn't, he can do something that he'll soon regret and give people a bad impression of him. But he isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. If something irks him, he won't hesitate to show it. And that sometimes gets him in trouble.
But despite all of this, Eric has a big heart for anyone who sees through his pitiful disguise and likes him for who he is. Then, he's pretty calm and gentle, and sometimes even fun-loving and excitable. But he doesn't show these emotions in public because, as mentioned before, he is very self-conscious. But, on the other hand, he is very territorial and makes a large effort to protect a certain 'beloved' (whom, he admits, he has yet to find) from the dangers of the outside world and the probability of his 'beloved' finding another lover. And the rest is history.
past
Eric was, at first, a normal boy. He lived with his mother and father and his older sister, Constance. Eric grew up in an apartment at the heart of New York City, and from a very young age, he had become obsessed with Broadway. He had always tried to coax his mother and father (and, when she was of age, his sister) to take him to see as many Broadway shows as possible. When they did, and the magic of the arts was revealed to him, Eric was in awe. He watched the graceful movements of the performers, appearing to be nearly flawless, the beautiful voices onstage, the catchy songs that usually were stuck in his head for quite a long time, and the interesting and fascinating storylines that he'd almost memorized in the case of certain plays.
It was when he had begun his obsession of Broadway when he'd realized his destiny in life. He was going to be a performer. Forget everything that his father had taught him about football and basketball and any other sports he'd heard of ending in -ball. He was going to be a performer, and he was going to be on the Broadway stage with his name in lights. He'd shared his dream with at least a few other people, and they'd all agreed that Broadway was too girly for a man of his type, and that he'd switch to something a little... manlier, such as being a musician (Eric had a decent voice, if not great) or even a wrestler or something else that provided physical activity. The art of performing was simply too girly.
But Eric continued to persevere, and he actually got somewhere, being involved in some of the productions at Baum. He was considered a star when he performed, and was actually pretty popular at Baum for a while between his freshman year and his junior year. But on the day before the first day of his senior year, everything changed.
When Eric woke up on the first day of his Senior year, he went to the bathroom like normal to take care of personal business when he noticed something odd in the mirror. Taking a careful examination, he noticed that something odd was on his face that hadn't been there the previous night. It was a growth, it was red, and it had swelled on nearly the entire right side of his face, making it look utterly disgusting and putrid to even take a glance at. It was then that Eric had awakened, to find out his true purpose in life.
Yes, he was going to be a performer.
But he was also destined to be eternally ugly.
present
Desperate to hide his hideous face from the public, Eric at first resided in his hand to cover his ugly face. But when people became suspicious and told him to remove his hand from his face, it became clear that something was wrong with Eric Lonesinner, something even worse than acne. Ever since then, Eric has turned from the popular star to the weird loser with the huge... whatever on his face. Eric tried other resources, but none were as prevalent as the white mask he had bought at a costume store the previous month. He still wears it today, and now, few people ask him why, because most of them have already seen the horror that is Eric's face.
But despite this, Eric still attempts to pursue his dream of being a performer. The mask, he admits, makes him look slightly intimidating, which explains his lack of a girlfriend, but he's content with it. It's better than what is under the mask, after all. Some of the substitute teachers who are there find his mask offensive sometimes, but he almost always states that it's a medical condition, and even though most of the students know for sure it's a lie, they don't dare to object. As far as they are concerned, it is a persistent medical condition.

...literature*
book title The Phantom of the Opera
backstory
For as long as anyone could remember, the mysterious "O.G." has terrorized the Paris Opera House with his apparent nonexistent presence and his constant plea of attention, mostly involving murder or innocent vanishing/appearing tricks around the opera. But what gets the House's staff really talking is the disappearance of Christine Daae, whom the Phantom kidnaps and takes to his lair in the catacombs of the opera house before forcing her to love him.
It isn't until Christine's true lover, Raoul, comes to save his damsel in distress that Christine is freed from the Phantom's (who is known in the actual book as "Erik," but for some reason, this information is ignored in the musical and various other portrayals of the story, simply calling him "Phantom" or "The Phantom") grasp. Erik's demise differs between the book and the musical. In the book, Erik dies, while in the musical, he simply disappears (and correct me if I'm wrong) and never returns and stays in that little emo cave forever or what have you.

rp sample Sydohwrye tucked the knife into his jacket pocket before realizing that the entire right side of his jacket was stained with a sticky gold substance. He swallowed, before searching for the source of the blood. He didn't have to look far, for his right arm was nowhere to be seen. Attempting to move it, the small half of a stump twitched a bit, shaking the gold blood from the wound.
He had to find Eric. Quickly.
Hiding the knife in his hair and taking off his jacket, Sydohwrye wrapped the jacket around his wound while he ran toward where he thought Eric and Ana would be. Which, he realized, he didn't know. But, in case Frederick would be about, he had to take precautions. Looking around frantically, he noticed a large mud puddle near one of the alleyways.
Perfect, he thought, rushing toward it and kneeling down in it, grabbing scoop after scoop and spreading it around his hair and face and skin. Sydohwrye didn't know what exactly this would do, or whether or not this would work. He just didn't want Frederick to recognize him until...
No, he didn't want to think of that now. Once he would find his arm, Agonistic could probably stitch it up again. And then he would be able to turn himself mortal without any intervention at all. AFTER he would find the woman who had cut off his arm. But he didn't have time to think about that, as he was approaching the tavern where Ana and Eric were. He WAS getting rather thirsty, although he had given up blood completely. He just wanted some water, nothing fancy like that. Besides, even if he DID drink the blood, it would probably taste of alcohol, and Sydohwrye didn't like alcohol.
Nonetheless, he stepped inside, oblivious of the familiar faces chatting nearby. He also wondered if anyone could nurse his arm.
