"Well then you're lucky I'm in a sharing sort of mood, aren't you?" Dan smiled warmly at Serah, somehow aware that she was beginning to act differently, if only in the back of his mind.
Whether he knew it or not, it certainly helped to relax him. The warmth of her smile seemed to seep its way through him, slowing his nervous heartbeat just enough to bring back the confidence that was allowing to to speak like an intelligent adult and not some fifteen year-old with a stuttering problem. He bit his lip as she steadied herself against him, feeling his heart start to pick up its pace again for no apparent reason. Before he could put together what exactly she was taking her shoes off for--not that he cared either way, because those things looked like they killed--Dan felt a yank on his hand as Serah began to run.
It didn't even occur to him that this was strange. Not even when they raced past countless other couples simply strolling down the street. Hell, not even when Dan bumped into one of the idiotic, slow-moving boyfriends with no more than an over-the-shoulder " 'Xcuse us!" and a laugh. For a few short minutes, all he could see was her bright red hair, the way her perfect curls seemed to be unraveling with every step, and how she somehow managed to look all the more beautiful for it, even if that was all he could see.
Then, just as suddenly, they stopped. Dan skidded to a halt beside Serah only so he could bend down, hands on his knees, and catch his breath. It took a lot longer than it needed too. Of course, that probably had something to do with the fact that he was crying, he was laughing so hard; one she'd snorted, Dan had completely lost it. He straightened up after a minute or two, wiping his eyes with the sleeve of his shirt as he took a deep breath. God, he hadn't felt this great sober in...well, he couldn't remember the last time. "Don't worry," he smiled at the sudden sweet little flush in her cheeks. God knew he had it too. "I love it," another chuckle and he'd taken her hand again, thankful that his palms weren't sweaty.
Without waiting too long for her to collect herself, Dan gave her hand a gentle tug and jerked his head in the direction of the path. It almost felt wrong, to stand in the same spot for too long; like it would ruin the night or something. "Come on. I wanna show you something before we get that dinner," he froze, a sheepish look suddenly taking over his face. "I mean, unless you're hungry now?"
