personality
Roy is the type of person who was raised perhaps a bit too strictly as a child. His mother didn't let him have a lot of free time to do whatever he wanted. It was always structured music lesons or sports or language tutors. It was supposed to make him a well-rounded, well-behaved adult, but all it really did was make him so uptight through high school that he was desperate for ANY escape from the strict regimen. Once college hit, he was taking any and all chances or offers to live on the wild side.
Roy's more impulsive than anything, and he never takes time to think things through. He lives by his gut feeling on most things, and will do whatever he thinks feels right, damn the consequences. He's a bit quick to judge people and things. He still has never, EVER tried broccoli or brussel sprouts or spinach, because he deemed them the grossest of all foods and pronounced that they would never touch his lips. He makes snap judgments about everything and every one. It's all extremes with him. Everything is either totally perfect and the best thing he's ever seen, or it's awful and evil and he hates it.
The thing that Roy fears most is falling back into the clutches of his mother. he doesn't want to be stuck doing what she says for the rest of his life, and as such he blatantly ignores anything and everything that she commands. He thought that moving across the country would be enough to keep her at bay, but apparently it was not. Her current desire, to see him with a nice, respectable young lady, is something that Roy is totally against. He loves being single too much to settle down with someone now.

book titleSwan Lake
backstory The story begins with Prince Siegfried coming of age and being congratulated by all the townspeople. He knows that his mother is going to demand that he marry a princess almost immediately, and he is determined to spend his last night of being single doing what he likes best: hunting. He goes out alone with a crossbow to a lake where he finds a flock of swans, whose apparent leader wears a crown. By nightfall, the crowned swan comes to him, a beautiful human woman, and tells him that she is the princess Odette under a spell and that by day she is a swan along with all the others. The only way to break the spell is if a man should profess his true love for her. Siegfried, always one to think ahead and plan these sorts of things out, is just about to confess his love for her when Von Rothbart, the sorcerer who cast the spell, arrives and takes Odette away, commanding the other swans to distract Siegfried so he is left alone.
The next night there is a massive ball that Siegfried's mother throws for her son. It is here that she has invited a ton of princesses for her son to pick and choose from, because apparently for royalty marriage is the same as grocery shopping. Siegfried doesn't like any of them because he's too busy thinking about his beautiful waterfowl mistress from the night before. Suddenly Von Rothbart enters, with his daughter Odile who has been enchanted to look like the ever so beautiful Odette. Siegfried, once again not being the most thoughtful lad, confesses his love for this magical vixen and they are engaged. Up ahead, Odette, with crown and all in her swanny form, bursts through a window and cries before flying away.
Siegfried sees the error of his ways and runs after her. Von Rothbart follows, catching the two of them together and explaining that if Siegfried doesn't marry Odile like he promised then some magical mayhem shall ensue and Odette AND Siegfried will die. Rather than say, live and maybe just mess around with his real love on the side, Siegfried impulsively decides that they BOTH shall die, because love works like that. They hurl themselves into the lake and drown, but apparently this counts enough as professing love for the spell as anything, and the rest of the swan flock turns human and kills Von Rothbart.
