Thump. Thump. Thump. Plop. Thump, thump, pop!
Soccer balls made just the most fun sound to her. Hit them on your head, or knees, it made a soft, thumping sound. Drop them in the grass, it made a squishing plop sound. Kick them into the goal as Joey just did, and it made a stunning popping sound. The tiny redhead smiled, and jogged over to the goal to retrieve the ball. Of course...she'd rather be kicking the ball into that large goal just behind the soccer net. The one that stood like a two-pronged fork at the end of the field.
No one took soccer seriously. Joey stared at the football goal while she thumped the spotted ball from one knee to the other. She loved soccer, there was no doubt about that--she'd been playing it since she could run. But at the same time--she really wanted to play football. She could be pretty good at it, she was small, agile and fast. But she was also a girl. Signing up as 'Joey Rooks', rather than 'Josephina Rooks', earned her a spot on the try outs. But when she showed up wearing the smallest possible uniform, and being the absolute tiniest on the team...she was laughed right off the field.
However the soccer team took her in. She was extrodinarily tiny, reaching only 4'11", and thin--not frail. And very quick. But the girls soccer team was not a contact sport. The boys could push, and shove all they wanted. Joey bounced the ball from knee to knee a little faster, her agitation growing. The football team hadn't even given her a chance! They hadn't even taken a chance to see what she could do, how fast she could be. And beign a girl--the other team might hesitate about tackling a small girl.
Thumpthumpthump.
Everyone made such a huge deal with the football team. They got the biggest funds in the school. They could get new uniforms, new equipment. They even got cheerleaders. They filled the stands on every home game, and they were the hereos of homecomming. No one cared about the soccer team. No one knew how hard Joey played. They were lucky if they could even get half the stands filled. And even when people came, it was to see the boys team. Because it could get rough.
And there went the ball. Joey, in her utter frustration dropped the ball to the ground, and kicked it with all of the force in her short legs.
POP!
The ball missed the net, and went veering off to the side. She stared at the football goal, looking pretty pissed off. And that was hard to do with little Joey. She wasn't easily upset--unless it came to discrimination. And not letting her ven try out for a team, because she was a girl was total discrimination.
Wait, where was the ball?
Her thought process had been so fast, so quick that she didn't even realize she had kicked the ball to god knows where. Her green eyes opened wide, looking for the spotted ball frantically.
