...appearance*
hair color A medium chocolate brown full of natural highlights from always being outside. Shelley's hair is naturally wavy and if not pulled up, she lets it chill in waves. Shelley hardly puts effort forth to style her hair any other way.
eye color Light, caramel brown.
build Athletic, but still girlish. Shelley has curves but her body is full of lean, hard muscle from years of surfing and swimming. Heck, Shelley has a better six pack than some guys.
height 5' 6"
clothing style Very simple. Shelley doesn't worry herself over clothes or staying in style. When not chilling in band tshirts and sweats or jerseys, Shelley is a fan of skinnies and tunics. As soon as the weather warms up at all, it's bright colors and flowly sundresses. On the flip side, Shelley bundles the hell up during fall and winter cus holy shit NYC is way cold.
Shelley always has her mother's favorite necklace on. It's a long, canvas-like cord with a shark tooth that Shelley found when she was two. The necklace hangs long enough so that it can easily be slipped under a shirt. Mrs. Summers had worn it nearly every day since making it and ever since her death, Shelley hasn't taken it off.
distinctive traits Shelley doesn't necessarily "walk". She kind of flows. It's not an airy float, but her movements are very fluid. She's been told she should dance, but Shelley's never been interested.
...personal*
personality
Shelley is very relaxed person, a stereotypical Hawaiin, if you will. Ever since she was little, Shelley never got fed up over the little things. Someone wanted her toy? Okay, go ahead. She's always exhibited a long fuse and a very even keel temperment. Many people have told her that she would make a great ER doctor because she hardly ever freaks out and can make decisions under pressure. Going along with her go-with-the-flow attitude, Shelley is a sweet social butterfly. She has many friends and discriminates against none (although she tends to prefer the company of males). The only time Shelley deviates from her relaxed way is when someone threatens her friends. She'll typically let them try to stand up for themselves, but if Shelley thinks it's bad then she'll say something, which makes everyone stop in shock. Shelley can count the number of times she's raised her voice on one hand. This being said, Shelley is pretty lazy in everything except sports. She prefers the easy life; chilling on a boat sipping coke and rum and enjoying life.
Speaking of, Shelley tries to not take advantage of life. Instead of mourning over her mom's death, Shelley followed the letter's advice and learned to rejoice in the happy days her mom had. Mrs. Summers had always been a lively person, and Shelley tries to live up to that every day. Shelley hardly says no to anything, simply because she loves new experiences. Would Shelley like to try this extremely hot pepper? Sure she would! It'll burn like a mother, but Shelley gets a laugh out of it. If you can get her off her rear, Shelley is up for anything.
Now there were changes when the mermaid awoke. Remember how Shelley would never get fussy over someone taking her things as a preschooler? She would now. Her things is one of only a few situations where Shelley will actually get mad. Mermaids are notorious for being hoarders and particularly found of their things and Shelley has acquired this trait. She rarely throws away anything; in fact, Shelley has a storage unit of all her old things. Even so, her desk is typically "organized chaos". Roommates beware, Shelley does not enjoy her possesions being messed with unless you get her permission. Luckily, she hasn't had to go psycho over this; her friends have begun to understand Shelley's possesiveness.
past
Shelley had the dream life.
Born in Maui, Hawaii, Shelley was emersed in marine life from the day she could walk. She was hardly ever inside as a child; Shelley never seemed to tire and had always been an even-keeled child, never one to cause trouble or freak out. Her mother, a marine biologist, often brought Shelley to job sites, where the toddler would pet stingrays and swim with dolphins. There was an appreciation for nature instilled in Shelley from day one and Shelley has never lost it.
When she has five, her pro-surfer father taught Shelley how to surf. Cody never went easy on his daughter, always pushing her harder and hardertowards mastery. While it was tiring to wake up before the sun, Shelley soon grew to love and depend on surfing. At age nine, she was already winning competitions, creating a surfing dynasty. During this time, Shelley was also exploring volcanoes and hanging with the natives, learning conversational Hawaiin and the art of hula dancing. For her birthdays, Shelley always demanded Polynesian barbeques (whole pigs, fried fruits, seafood, etc.) with dancing and music and bonfires. The only girl friends she had were some of the older dancers; Shelley's activeness and pursuit of surfing led to mostly male companions.
Everything was going great and Shelley was living the good life until her mom died. When Shelley was twelve, her Lorelei approached the family with daunting news. She had been chosen for a high-risk expedition that would last three months. Lorelei was confident that nothing would go wrong and so Shelley expected the same. Lorelei was horribly wrong. The boat ended up being capsized and lost at sea during a storm. Shelley and Cody waited for months to see Lorelei turn up; even her dead body would've been better than not knowing. A year later, when Shelley was thirteen and completely cried out, they discovered two letters from lorelei; one for Cody and one for Shelley. Shelley's read:
My darling shelley;
If you're reading this, they can't find us. I know you must feel grief-stricken, but don't fret, little Song Bird. I don't want you to live your life in sadness; please enjoy it. You've always had such enthusiasm for life and I don't want you to lose that because of me. Live life to the fullest every day; if you feel down, remember this letter and my last wish for you: do not be sad. Be happy, spread the warmth I know is in your heart to thosewho don't feel it.
I'll always be in your heart, Shell Bell.
Love,
Mommy
present
Shelley took her mother's wishes to heart. There was, of course, a period of extreme grief. On days like that, Shelley went down to the water. When she was fourteen, Shelley went down to the water at night, and the first transformation happened. It was extremely painful and Shelley had no clue what was happening, until the mermaid came to her. She explained what Shelley was and comforted her with the idea that Shelley would never be alone. Of course, the mermaid tried to enforce her dislike of people onto Shelley, but the only changes were to Shelley's posessiveness and singing voice. Cody quit surfing and began to drive a wedge between himself and Shelley, not wanting to remember his late wife.
Before Shelley's freshman year, Cody announced that he would be taking a spot as an MTV marketing exec, and Shelley was to go with him to live in New York. She was heartbroken and distraught, immediately enrolling in a boarding school to be away from her father. She missed him every day, but Shelley couldn't forgive him for uprooting her life. Shelley threw herself into soccer and swimming, making plenty of friends and living the way her mother wanted.
family
Cody Summers -- father -- 39 -- Was a pro surfer, now a marketing exec for MTV
Lorelei Summers -- mother -- deceased- Was a marine biologist
likes
+ Sea food
+ Pork. Gosh, Shelley misses all the Polynesian cookouts.
+ Knick knacks.
+ The water
+ The Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffett
+ New adventures, parties
+ Pranks!
dislikes
- Seafood. Ever since the mermaid awoke, Shelley has been disgusted by the thought of seafood but hates that she has occasional cravings for it.
- When people think she's a pothead.
- People messing with her things.
- New York weather.
- The distance that has grown between her and her father.
other notes Because of the mermaid, when certain conditions are met, Shelley herself can turn into a mermaid. 1) She must be in contact with an open body of water like the ocean. 2) Her head must be clear of all distractions. 3) It must be warm. The change can not go through in cold water. It is also very painful.
Shelley hardly sings around people, but she has a melodic, magical voice. Also due to the mermaid, Shelley is almost sirenesque when singing, which is why she rarely does.

book title Peter and Wendy
backstory The mermaids are minor characters in Peter and Wendy, but they're not to be overlooked. Living in the Mermaid Lagoon, the mermaids lounge on the rocks and comb out their hair. None are welcome to Mermaid Lagoon except for Peter Pan. It is highly dangerous to go by the Lagoon at night, for the mermaids are out singing their siren song, trying to lure sailors to their death...
