[/font][/b] present tense fail dont kick meShe's never done this or anything like it before, been to an actual real-life party– it's just another of many things to be scratched off Autumn's lengthy bucket list. She feels akin to following the devil right into fiery hell, like little red riding hood taking the clawed hand of the big bad wolf and letting it drag her into the depths of the dark and unfamiliar woods.
Jolene isn't quite the big bad wolf, much less the devil, and this party isn't quite hell, but Autumn can see the similarities. There were not so many girls like Jolene in the Ojai Valley, not so many girls with the rolling golden hair and the glassy green eyes. Not so many girls with Jolene's fancy cars and fancy clothes and accessories, next to which Autumn looks like a slippery fish out of water. Definitely not so many girls who have their pretty little faces sprawled across the news.
Her life is an open book to the public. To not know Jolene Miller is to be the pinnacle of ignorance, and Autumn Raine, who can hardly wrap her head around the idea of fame and fortune, is very much that. Ignorant. Naive, as she lets this exotic blonde woman tow her across New York City, surrounded by pretty girls and pretty boys, none of whom are without a hefty bank account to fall back on.
Autumn wants to stop the madness and shout in her soft-spoken voice that there must be something wrong for her, for Autumn Raine to have found herself in the hands of such a woman as Jolene, in the midst of drugs and alcohol and sex and everything that, just a year ago, Autumn could hardly have imagined to exist at all.
Of course, Autumn isn't complaining. If there's anything she needs in New York, it's a friend and Jolene has so far proven to be the greatest and most beneficial friend that Autumn could ever have discovered. She is sweet, charming, alluring, and she shines like the very stars in the sky. She is everything that Autumn is not and will never be.
The sights, the sounds, they're overwhelming. Everywhere you look, something is happening. The world seems to spin around Autumn, everyone seems to gravitate toward her– no, not towards her, towards Jolene. Jolene is the brightest burning star. Jolene is the sun.
"I've never been to one of these things before," Autumn says to Jolene, as if it isn't obvious. She barely knows the affluent woman, and yet she stays close, to avoid getting lost in the lights and the sounds and the people. "I mean," she tries to make conversation, but she can hardly hear herself over the music. "I went to a dorm party, at Barrie, my college, but it wasn't really... anything like this." No shit, Autumn, Jolene goes hard or goes home.notes
