Spring. A time for renewal and life, a beautiful time of year. The leaves on the trees growing and the grass sprouting out vibrantly. Small flowers grew throughout the un-mowed fields as little children ran through them with there parents and there sports equipment. The season was beautiful, bringing color back to the earth. Though this season was her least favorite she still enjoyed it, for its own personality traits. She jogs slowly on the pavement, skidding around the cracked gravel and B lining the large park in her spring equipment. Capri’s and a tank top, not quiet time for shorts but not quiet right to be in this short of sleeves either. She could feel the wind prickling against her skin as she enjoys the feeling of her legs stretching out.
As Rafael runs she feels the wind pick up and throw around her hair, the red lengths brushing and teasing her back. She moves, causing the tail of hair to bounce up and down behind her as does the small back she has draped over her shoulder. She closed her eyes for a moment, concentrating on her breathing before opening up her eyes again and jumping over a crack and continuing on her path. Enjoying the feel of the sweat now starting to bead down her arms and forehead. It had been a while since she had had time just to run. It was relaxing, she had been in the ice rink all winter and though it worked her out pretty well she knew she needed to train harder now that spring was here for Track.
She slows down as she nears a newspaper stand, she walks up, looking behind the counter at the television which is set on the sports channel. A smile slips over her lips as she sees a commercial running across the fuzzy screne for the Olympics, her goal. No, her dream. She was going to be there someday, she knew that, at least. That was what she pushed herself for so hard every day. She turns away, just as the shop keeper notices her and slides back onto the pavement of the main sidewalk. She thinks of the Olympics she had seen as a child with her family, how her Mother and Sister had disappeared during the Hockey game but that she and her Father had gotten tickets for every event they could. She smiled, moving around a mother pushing a stroller and whispers.
“I will stay strong Dad.”
She looks at the sky before another jogger passes by her. She jumped and moves aside watching as the bleached blonde goes past her. Rafael’s eyes go wide as she watched the other girls perfect form and her perfect body leave her in the dust. She loses her breath for a moment, wondering how someone can be so beautiful, but then remembers her Mothers criticism and that it was only because she was so inferior. She hunched over her shoulders a little bit, her good mood dissolving before she clenches her fist and pulls herself back up.
“I just have to try harder!”
She got back onto the side walk and started to run, having already finished her warm-up jog she went full stride running. She had too proved it, she wouldn’t give up even when others were better then her in every other way, she was going to win this. She was going to strive back into step and keep her breath paced. To run towards the Olympics. It was her dream, nothing was going to stop her. At least, unless a little kid runs in front of her run path and she has to diverge quickly, stumbling and falling over a park bench as she tries to slow down.
‘Yes, smooth move Rafael.’ She tells herself inwardly as she sits up on the bench a little star struck with surprise but looking around blushing vigorously at her mishap.
