Andrea hadn't been out to the the Grimm Avenue Mall in a while, mostly because of the crazy crowds on weekends. But Baum had given them a four day weekend for teacher conferences or something around those lines, so the mall was fairly quiet on the final day before school started again. Addie, one of Andrea's best friends, had convinced her that today was the perfect day to go shopping for a dress for the Make A Wish masquerade ball. Andrea usually didn't like shopping with people that weren't her mother, because she always needed a lot of extra help and took forever to feel through the dresses on the hangers. However, Addie was always so patient and sweet with her, and also picked out things that she thought Andrea would like. Which was convenient, because if she didn't do that, Andrea would have to spend five hours feeling through however many dresses there were in the store.
Addie had walked with her to the closest clothes hanger, and Andrea had started feeling through the multiple dresses that were on the rack. The first one had been too pouffy and long, like a tulle ball gown or something. The second one seemed like it had been made out of some kind of stretchy material, like spandex. She had wondered why anyone would even bother making a spandex dress, and couldn't even imagine someone buying it in a formal dress shop.
Andrea continued to feel through the different textures of dresses as she scoured through the closest rack. The third one her hands fell upon was incredibly smooth, and felt almost cold, and the top bent in a little in the middle. So that meant that it was probably a strapless satin dress, with a sweetheart neckline. She ran her fingers towards the bottom, and felt that it was on the short side, which was good because she did not want to risk accidentally tripping over a long dress. She reached her hands back up to the top, and felt around for a second until she felt the hard plastic of a hanger. "What color is this?" She said, holding the dress out to wear she last heard Addie's voice. Maybe she would try it on if it wasn't neon green or something like that.
And she had totally forgotten to quiet down as she said that. Soon enough, she could hear the shopkeepers whispering in the corner. Her hearing wasn't good enough to hear what they said, but it was good enough to know that they were talking about her. Of course they were, she had just blatantly asked what color a dress was. Oh god, she just wanted to turn back time and just not have said anything. Or just hide under a pile of dresses in the corner and die.
