Delilah couldn't believe it.
Vivienne was in New York City. Vivienne was in New York City. Ugh!
They always say you can take a girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of a girl. That was definitely applicable to Delilah, who was still rocking her southern accent and cowgirl boots as she walked down Broadway, guitar in tow. A few people eagerly followed behind her, snapping pictures every now and then of the country music star. Either New York had finally gotten used to the singer being in their midst, or she had gotten what she wished for: getting away from her old life. No, Delilah was never going to give up music or her roots (that could be seen from the guitar case), but she wanted to be away from them. Vivienne.
Luke.
Leaving her home had been so easy at first, as she had done it out of anger, something Delilah wasn't accustomed to. She left in a whirlwind, letting her anger carry her to the big city. Then, it was hard. Delilah wanted to go back to her family, to the life she had known before. That couldn't happen, though. Vivienne was there. Well, the emphasis being on was. Vivienne had found out about Delilah's move and had the nerve to come to New York herself.
As if Delilah needed one more reason to leave.
Delilah knew that she couldn't hate Vivienne forever. That just wasn't in her personality. Hell, she didn't even hate Vivi. Just disliked her. But Delilah was terrified of their meeting later this week. It had been forever since she had talked to her cousin, and Delilah was afraid that her forgiving nature would let Vivienne off. But gosh, she just couldn't do that! Delilah had been engaged! Engaged to a man she had loved all her life, to a man she had---
Delilah whirled around. It wasn't just a few people taking her picture anymore, which she had been perfectly fine with. She had been used to that her whole life. Now it was a large crowd, paparazzi included. "Delilah! Are you coming back to music!" "Miss Punzel, are we gonna see you on Broadway?" Dammit, she knew she should've gotten someone to come to her to fix her guitar! It was a stupid idea that she had thought to go out and get it fixed and then take the long way back to Barrie so she could check out the happenings on Broadway. Cameras kept flashing and Delilah was about to go southern demon on those parasites. It was like a chant: "Delilah! Delilah! Delilah!" "Delilah!" She froze. This time, her name hadn't been coming from the photographers. It was coming from behind her and damn, it sounded familiar. Slowly, Delilah turned back around and was face to face with Vivienne.
Holy mother of Jesus.
Doing what came to her instinctively in these situations, Delilah grabbed Vivienne's hand and pulled her along into the crowd as they lost the paparazzi one by one. After a few long, agonizing minutes, Delilah dropped Vivi's hand like it was hot and turned to stare her down. "Vivienne." Delilah said, not knowing what to add. The forgiving part of her said to hug Vivienne, for she was Delilah's cousin. The sassy side of Delilah said to just stomp away and pretend like it never happened. Delilah decided to stay there, doing neither of those options but rather making a compromise with herself. They were going to meet earlier in the week, so why not get it over with now? "Why are you in New York?" Might as well get that out of the way first.

Vivienne Belle thought she was prepared. She had gone over the words she knew needed to be said over and over in her head, even in the mirror a couple of times when she had styled her hair to look like her cousin's. She missed Delilah so much it physically hurt. It was a little obsessive, maybe, but she was the only one that was even close to understanding Vivienne, and the only one that she let her walls down in front of and just said what she wanted without judgement.
Until that horrible thing, that God-awful terrible decision that she thought was a kindness at the time. Why she had thought that was a mystery to her now, as she regretted it eery day she was without her beautiful cousin with her perfect blonde hair that Vivienne always wanted. She always wanted to be like Delilah, with all her country charm and southern sass and the social graces Vivienne never had. She hated herself sometimes because she did all these things for people and she didn't understand why people didn't like them most of the time and treated her like a villain.
Once, during those long years away from the only person that truly mattered to her, she hated herself to the point of the edge of a building and an almost fall. She had talked herself down, though, saying that she couldn't do this without apologizing to Delilah and making it clear that Vivienne did love her to pieces and only did what she thought was right.
But there was something else inside her that talked her out of it too, something lurking that she didn't understand. It was dark so she ignored it, but was afraid of it. There was another reason she didn't jump off that building, and all these words she hated floated around her. Injustice. Greed. Selfishness. Revenge. She didn't understand why any of them came to mind, especially the last one. Delilah had never done anything wrong to her, as Vivienne realized that she had only left New York because she ruined everything and it was all her own fault, not Delilah's doing at all.
These same things drove her to New York City, to Jacobs Apartment Complex, to walk by Barrie University once a day, for all the ten days she had been here, trying to work up the nerve to apologize and try to fix what she had broken. The chat room was a plan B, and she never expected to actually meet her cousin in there. But she had, and Delilah said she would meet with her. Delilah would meet with her! Vivienne had thought Delilah would never want to speak to her ever again, but Vivienne was given a chance she probably didn't deserve. It was all the same to her, though, and Saturday couldn't come fast enough.
Vivienne had spent the days since the chat room doing absolutely nothing but trying to come up with the words that would repair everything, and so far, she found a few but not near enough. She needed inspiration, something to make her words seem wonderful and make everything better with her and Delilah.
She had no idea that rehearsing an apology wasn't a way to make it sincere.
So she had gone to Broadway to find a show to watch. She had always loved theatre because it seemed more real to her than a film, though that didn't mean she didn't love films, of course. She hadn't noticed who they were taking pictures of across the street until a name floated across the way.
It was her. Right there, being attacked by those awful paparazzi! Vivienne hated those people ever since they insulted her parents, who both were perfectly fine until they slandered their names in ridiculous magazines. That was when her father started to drink, which led to everything else that happened.
She ran across the street, only getting honked at by one car that very nearly hit her. She didn't even turn around to apologize. There was only one apology that mattered at the moment.
As soon as Vivienne hit the sidewalk behind Delilah Punzel, she realized she wasn't ready. There was no way she was prepared to take back every wrong she had ever done, to fix all the broken things, to patch up the holes she had blown right through everything with the sawed-off shotgun of bad decisions. She needed more time. She should just walk away until Saturday when she would be prepared (not realizing that she would never be fully prepared).
And the paparazzi were on her and it was obvious she didn't like it, so she had to defend her, right? Vivienne couldn't just leave her cousin there without doing something to fend off those vicious people. So she took one step towards her cousin and called. "Delilah!"
It all happened very quickly. Delilah grabbed her hand and pulled her away, and Vivienne let her. Once they were away from the flashing lights, her stomach began to churn and she knew Delilah would want to get this over now. The question was expected but still didn't help her feel less nervous.
"I came to see you." Obvious, much? "We needed to talk, and I missed you." It took everything she had not to hug her cousin right then, which was odd because Vivienne was never the type for physical contact. But her emotions were raging, and her voice was cracking. "I-I need to... say... apologize..." She gulped. Her face was red and her eyes were watering and she could no longer look into Delilah's eyes. Wiping the tears away, she told herself that she had no right to cry, that if anyone should cry, it's Delilah over what she did to her. That didn't help, though. Vivienne hated that she was crying, that her tears probably seemed fake when they weren't. It was just that this was the first time she had seen Delilah in real life, instead of just a picture, the first time she had to come face-to-face with her actions and take responsibilty and admit that she was a horrible, horrible person. Her whole body trembled, but she stood firm and looked her right in the eye, because that's what she needed to do. "I need to apologize for what I did. I-I thought it was right at the time... and it wasn't. It was horrible, and awful, and the most terrible thing I've ever done, much more terrible than anyone's ever done to me..." She paused and gulped again. "And I-I understand if you never want to speak to me again, but I-I need to say... I'm sorry. And I-I know it doesn't make up for anything, but it still needs to be said." She stuttered with every 'I' because she knew she needed to make this about Delilah and not about her. "Delilah, I-I know now that you probably hate m-me, and I-I deserve it, but I-I just want you to know that I love you and only did that because I-I thought it was for the better. But now I-I'm not... sure..." She had started to doubt herself when Delilah was gone, that the man in the bar wasn't Luke, that he wasn't a cheater, that even what he did with Vivienne was just Vivienne's fault because she had intended it to happen, maybe.
She coughed, and thought she was going to vomit from the anxiety and the crying and the trembling. Her hand went up to her mouth and she stopped talking, seeing as she was just going to go on like this and Delilah wasn't going to forgive her ever and she was going to throw up if she spoke anymore. And she wouldn't allow the latter if she could help it.
