Having a job at the zoo must be nice.
You got to meet all sorts of people: big happy families, parents taking their kids for the first time, animal lovers. You got to watch tigers and penguins and exotic birds – even if they were trapped in cages. You got discounts on toys and souvenirs. Yes, having a job at the zoo must be absolutely wonderful. Of course, the workers didn’t look all that excited to be here. Then again, there was the weather to consider. Not to mention the kids that ignored the signs that said DON’T FEED THE ANIMALS or STAY OFF THE FENCE. Signs like that seemed pretty serious to Addison. She wasn’t sure why anybody would ignore them. (Though she could definitely think of a few friends of hers that would ignore the signs).
Addison decided to visit the zoo today simply because she had nothing better to do. Her homework was done, she’d finished her books, she already had plenty of baked goods in the kitchen (she’d been baking a lot since Pickle had been teaching her), and she didn’t want to bother anybody else. Sure, she could’ve have called Tyler or texted Andie or written her mother. Today was one of those days, though; one where she wanted to spend her time alone. Addison just had a feeling she couldn’t enjoy the zoo with anybody else. Probably because others just wanted to run around and look at all the animals. Addison liked taking her time, people and animal watching.
It was because she was also people watching that Addison noticed the guy walking in her direction. He could have been any other zoo visitor but there was something very familiar about him. She was sure she’d never seen him before. Slowing a bit, Addison ignored how blatantly she was staring at him. He’d walk right by her soon and then she’d never figure out what she recognized about him. It wasn’t until he was about to pass her that she finally noticed. Addison stopped very suddenly and turned around, hurrying to his side. “Excuse me! ” She had to look up at him, he was so much taller than her. “Hi, uhm. Sorry to bother you, but I was just wondering…” Addison paused and smiled, embarrassed but determined. “ Do you by any chance have a sister named Alpha?” Looking up at his face now, it seemed so obvious. “ I mean, it’s just you two look so alike.” Wow, she hoped she was right. How awkward would this be otherwise? outfit![/blockquote]

Wandering around the zoo had seemed like a good plan when he'd first decided on it. But now, as Jason Megalos continued his aimless meandering, he realized that it wasn't as spectacular as it should have been. First off, it was cold, which meant a lot of the animals were resting inside their caves and holes and whatever else they called home. That left you basically with the bird and reptile houses, and they had easily gotten crowded because they were the only attractions at the moment.
Second, Jason hadn't tied in to his plan that he'd be acting alone during the excursion. His buddies from school all had homework, his sister was studying for some test -- who made the new girl take tests? -- and there was virtually no one else around who would have been interested in strolling around a nearly empty zoo.
Jason was actually just on his way to the exit when someone stopped him. A girl, in fact. She looked to be no older than his sister, but Jason had long ago learned that appearance was only a lie, that someone could be years away from how they looked. At first, Jason had thought she'd stopped him because he'd dropped his wallet or something. The tall male quickly patted down his pockets as the girl stammered at him, finding that everything was accounted for with the fast search. So why was she hailing him down?
But then the answer was clear, and Jason couldn't help the broad grin that came across his face. This girl thought he looked like Alpha. In a way, it could be considered a compliment, but not how most people would perceive it. When your younger sister was adopted, and strangers came up to you saying that the two of you bore a family resemblance, how could someone not be flattered by that?
"Umm, actually, yeah," Jason chuckled, putting his hands in his pockets and looking down at the younger girl. "I do by chance have a sister named Alpha. She goes to school at Baum Academy."
A moment too late, Jason realized that perhaps telling this total stranger where Alpha went to school was a horrible decision. What if this girl was some sort of stalker that Alpha had never mentioned to her brothers? They had always protected Alpha, but there were times when she'd kept secrets because she didn't like to bother them. Perhaps this was one of those times, and now he'd just blown his sister's cover.
Oh, God. Now Jason felt guilty. He severely hoped this girl wasn't a stalker of some sort, though it was obvious she wasn't a stranger. Well, sort of. Stalkers could be unknown to their victims after all. But still. It was best to figure out more about this girl, and how exactly she knew Alpha.
"I'm Jason," the college sophomore introduced, extending his hand towards the young girl. "And you are?" There. That would settle his guilty conscience. Finding out who exactly this girl was a good plan. He'd report his findings to Alpha, and confirm the girl's story later. That is, if she made something up about being a friend to Alpha. It was New York.
Crazier things had happened.

He definitely seemed confused. She had sort of appeared, hadn’t she? Most people introduced themselves first. They waited until later in the conversation to bring up what they’d been curious about. Evidently, Addison wasn’t most people. Could you blame her for being curious, though? What were her chances in running into Alpha’s (maybe) brother? They were, like, one in a million. New York City was huge and there were lots of places for people to be. To just happen to run into Alpha’s (maybe) brother at the Central Park Zoo was total luck. She wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass her by.
When he did answer her, a big grin lit up her face. “Yes! I knew it. You absolu— ” and that was when she stopped. Wow, how forgetful was she? Hadn’t Alpha said she was adopted? It was one of the first things they’d talked about: how her family was Greek, she wasn’t, and she’d come to New York to find her mom. For a moment, Addison blushed. She felt kind of really silly now. Could Alpha look so much like her adopted brother? It seemed a bit improbable. However, she had to admit, it was neat that they did have noticeable similarities. And with that thought in mind, she was back to back to being curious and not embarrassed.
Addison shook hands with him, still basking in the glow of being right. She did this a lot, actually. “Addison. Pleasure to meet you, Jason.
” It came to her quite suddenly, but she decided that, if they were ever to become close enough friends, she’d call him Jase. Nicknames weren’t entirely her thing, but change never hurt. “ Oh… and wow…” She laughed shortly, letting her hand fall. “ Here you don’t even know how I know her.” Tugging a strand of hair, feeling a bit awkward, she smiled as if to show that she wasn’t some stalker freak. “ I showed her around on her first day. I get what it’s like to be the new girl and it sucks to be ignored.” Addison shrugged and rocked on her feet. “ I wanted to make sure she felt welcome.” And safe and that not all high school students were mean and that being the new kid wasn’t always so bad. Addison. Well, she seemed nice enough, and her knowing of Alpha seemed legitimate, but Jason knew he'd still have to check in with his sister. She had probably met several people on her first day of school, and there could be a chance that this Addison was someone who had not been on his sister's "Glad I'm Friends With You" list. Even though basically everyone ended up on that list when it came to Alpha.
But she had said she'd wanted to make Alpha feel welcome, and Jason couldn't see anything wrong with someone like that. After all, Alpha had been thrust into a new environment in the middle of her senior year. "Well, thanks for that," Jason said on his sister's behalf, giving her a wide smile. "It's good to know that someone was looking out for my sister on her first day." He could really only imagine what Alpha had felt like when she stepped into Baum on the first day. He'd toured the school with her, on a weekend, but only the classrooms and whatnot. There had not been many students around at the time, so surely it must have been a different experience for his sister when she'd witnessed the halls crowded and swarming with a mass of people.
But now Jason was out of things to say to the girl before him, who was smiling at him happily, as if seeing Jason had made her day. "Umm, do you come to the zoo often?" he asked, almost pathetically, from lack of a better conversation piece to go on. He'd just met the girl, after all. It wasn't like he could ask her about anything personal.
