personality Rapahael is a highly pious fellow. He believes strictly in God and the rulings of the Catholic church, choosing a life of chastity before marriage, and often proclaiming his disgust at the sexually intense lives led by most youth today - especially those of women. Many would even claim that Raphael despises women, at times, for he seems to frown quite often whenever he is in the presence of one. However, this isn't true at all. In fact, Raphael has a strong libido that he represses in favor of chaste vows. He does, indeed, wear a chastity ring and is a proud virgin.
Raphael is strongly in support of charity and helping the needy. He often volunteers at homeless shelters and other such places, gravely performing his duty for the good of man kind. Indeed, he sees it as a necessity, not as him particularly being a very worthy man. It is simply the righteous way of life, and those who do not choose to help those less fortunate are worse than hateful; they are indifferent, which can be condemned as easily as those who wield the knife of injustice themselves.
Departing from his passion for aiding the needy, Raphael is fairly awkward. He is a very scholarly man, fluent in his native French, his favorite Latin, and the necessary English needed for living in America. He speaks all of them so well it's easy to forget that Raphael was, in fact, born in France. People find him quite odd, as well as stuck-up and with a dry and very dark sense of humor if one can catch him in a joking mood (rare enough in itself). He usually frightens people off with his deep frowns and hints at disapproval, though he rarely outright condemns a person. In short, Raphael is a holier-than-thou bookworm and was destined to be put off as that "spidery, glowering fellow".
As for women and romance, Raphael has claimed only one girlfriend in his life, a girl with similar strict upbringings but found Raphael's awkward attempts at romance too odd for her. Frankly, his life love was very short lived and is fairly dead at the moment. He settles for looking on from afar, usually in disapproval. That doesn't stop him from sighing longingly into the darkness when he falls asleep at night, his own horrible, lusty desires continually tempting him into the path of the devil.
past Born in Paris, the young Raphael Constantine lived in a wealthy and well-adjusted family. He remembers them well, though he was young when they died in a tragic fire, and his brother was just an infant. Later, he would often pray for their good souls, after he and his brother were taken in by a religious family, who moved to America a year after his adoption. He grew to become rigid, molded by his new family into a perfect Catholic son, going to stern private schools and earnestly absorbing all the knowledge he could. The same couldn't be said for his brother.
From a young age, Raphael watched over his younger sibling with concern. While he didn't want to pressure the boy the same and their adoptive parents, he was certain this path couldn't be good. In the end, Raphael choose to express his disapproval, but not attempt to change anything. He found that those who tried to mold the unwilling into their beliefs were highly oppressive and resented. Raphael was already enough unpopular that he selected a life of quiet frowns over outright preaching against those whose lifestyles would surely lead to doom and damnation. Although it was painful, Raphael knew that very little could alter the course an individual set for themselves. Raphael might have drawn the short end of the socialization stick, but he was a far cry from unintelligent.
Leading a quiet life in a medium sized suburban town, moving to New York City for further education wasn't too hard of a shock for Raphael. He had, after all, once lived in Paris, a large and complexly built city in it's own right. However, he had quite forgotten the level of scandal seemed to expand with the amount of people shoved into one area.
present Raphael has taken to becoming far more of a reclusive eccentric in response to the depravity of college life, and often studies in complete seclusion. He is quick to decline anything morally compromising, and his little lift of an eyebrow and quite sniff is enough to show what he thinks of such lowbrow activities.
On the other hand, the temptations stack higher, and Raphael begins to wonder, now at that truly experimental stage of a young adult's life, if he's not missing out on something. After all, when all the vices in the world lay scattered across a university campus, it's hard to resist the compulsion to maybe try, just once... and with cracks occurring in Raphael's armor, he is beginning to lose his moral high ground.

...literature*
book title Hunchback of Notre Dame
backstory In the beginning, Frollo starts out as this eccentric but good-hearted character. He is highly compassionate and rescues a deformed child (Quasimodo) and raises him as his own son. He uses the money from his fiefdom to support his younger brother Jehan's horribly sinful activities, because he sincerely loves his brother even if he disapproves of his wantonness. He's also a serious scholar and fluent in many languages, aside from being an archdeacon. He's also infatuated with alchemy, which leads some people to believe he's a witch.
Anyhow, we all know how it unfolds. He meets Esmeralda, who is pretty much a gypsy and way beneath him, but he falls all over her and his loins are stirred despite his vows of celibacy, seeing as he's a high priest in the Catholic church and all. He ends up revoking everything in order to pursue her romantically, but she rejects him quite a lot, because she really wants to tango with Phoebus. He attempts to kill Phoebus in jealousy, but fails epically. When she's arrested, he attempts to show her how much he loves her by stabbing himself and showing her his wounds (I know, really horrifying, right? xD). He comes fairly close to raping her when she seeks sanctuary at the cathedral, but Quasimodo beats the shit out of him (not realizing it's his adoptive father), and he ends up running off and turning her over to the authorities. When seen laughing in a bout of madness as Esmeralda is hanged (yeah, she dies in the book), Quasimodo ends up pushing him off the cathedral of Notre Dame where he falls to his final death.
