Consideration, consideration, consideration. A number of things ran through the teenager's mind. Fear, excitement, worry. Her boots crunched over the freshly fallen snow as she wrapped her arms in on herself, staring up at the pink neon that light up the snow in a pale shade of the color. She was still on the other side of the street, not enough to draw the attention of anyone in the line, or the bouncers watching people cross the street. The pros were that she would be warm, and she could have fun for a little while. Maia Bolton did not come back to New York to live in the shadows, and be the tough--but generally rule abiding little girl she had been before. Okay--loosely rule abiding, but abiding nevertheless.
Parking her rear down on a bench, she crossed one leg over the other and stared at the pink hued snow. Cons--she could get caught and arrested for using a fake I.D. She could also have a bit of trouble with some guys in the club, since she hadn't thought about using the buddy system. Granted her parents were far on the other side of the country, her arrest might result in a one-way ticket back to Colorado. The idea of being sent back to Colorado, and having no way to be near New York--or a certain person that lived here sent a thrill of panic into her heart. Her breath came out in slightly faster puffs, and with a shake of her head--she managed to settle herself down.
Was this the kind of person she had turned into? A fraidy cat? No--she was going to go in there. Flash that fake I.D., and have a good time. When Maia sucked in a sharp breath of cold air--she fully intended to stand up and march right in. However the message didn't reach her legs, and she remained on that frozen, cold bench. Tipping forward, her elbows met her knees, and her forehead met her hands. Long waves of brown curls fell forward and she found herself sighing into the air. She could hear the muffled thudding of the club across the street, calling to her. Once upon a time, she had been a daredevil. Sucking up worms, licking the ends of batteries. There was even that time she was dared to jump in the snow wearing nothing but a bikini. But there was always the one person that had made her brave--since those times passed, Maia realized she had been walking the sidewalk of safety.
She couldn't do this. The cons seemed to outweigh the pros, and she hadn't even thought on it too far. The teenager had walked all this way, snuck out past school curfew and all but danced her way down the streets of New York without thinking that she would once chicken out. And here she sat, reassuring her feet that they would indeed carry her home, back to her dorm. Where she would throw herself onto her bed--possibly watch a disgusting Disney Channel movie with a bucket of ice cream. Alone. Because despite it all, friends didn't seem to come easily to her. Not anymore--not that she was different. Maybe it was time for another change; maybe when summer rolled around she'd play soccer again. Maybe she'd try out for the sports that she loved so much.
With another sigh that expelled steam from her cold lips--she pushed herself to her feet. And yet--even now. Even with her decision settling on her shoulders--she found it hard to walk away from the club. Caught in the middle, stuck in indecisiveness. Slowly, she turned, taking the tiniest of steps away. The sound of heels on the sidewalk, and drunken laughter leaked from across the street, and she waited. Waited to see if that sudden surge of will would come rushing to her and carry her across the street, into the pounding music and warm, thick air.
