personality
Despite being nearly as inspired as some of the greatest thinkers and inventors in history, he can come across as disconcertingly vapid. His mind is a beehive of activity and processing that can cause him to space out at odd, inconvenient moments. Mer's attention span can never be devoted to a singularity for long. He comes across as stubborn, unless given good reason not to be, and painfully absentminded.
Mer is excessively superstitious. Believing in almost every myth, legend, tall tale, and superstition leaves him throwing salt over his shoulder and avoiding cats and ladders like the plague. As a result of his naivety, Mer is perpetually frightened by anything that goes bump in the night.
Through all of his flaws, Mer has his moments of brilliance. Scientific to the very end, life fascinates him on a biological and chemical level. Nothing in the way of depravity surprises him, the world is corrupt and people are evil.
past
Merwin was the second and last child born in the Irving family. Merwin's brother was seven years older then him which made him 'mom's sweet baby' and also his brother's special project (read: victim).
Vernon had a passion for all things frightening and spooky. As a result, Merwin grew up being told ghost stories under the sheets and spending the rest of the night curled up between his mother and father in bed, shaking like a leaf and wide eyed. Besides telling him ghost stories at the witching hour, Vernon was merciless. He would find great pleasure in playing tricks on Mer, taking him to cemeteries in the middle of the night, and jumping out of shadows at the unsuspecting kid.
As a result, Mer is both scared of his own shadow and morbidly fascinated by anything frightening or mysterious.
Merwin's brother left home when Mer was only eleven years old. He lost both his brother and his best friend when Vernon went away to college. With busy working parents, this left Mer to his own devices after school and the boy spent his time perusing mystery and science. He spent the next few years either taking apart radio clocks and building computers out of them or reading about jack the ripper and other unsolved crimes.
present
Merwin lives in the dormitory at the Baum Academy and he's already planing his move onward into college where he can't decide if he would rather be a detective and solve crimes or a biologist, although cutting something open and looking inside gives him the willies.
Merwin visits home every weekend and has lunch on his parents deck by the pool with them, and occasionally gets in the water, though he's afraid of the deep end. He is trying to get himself a job after school and he's tentatively handing out applications.

For most, this twisting library would have been a nightmarish beast... For most, this labyrinth could have overwhelmed a student's senses, knocked them flat and shunned their entry from it's deepest recesses... For most, it would have been cataclysmic to become lost... But for others, the school library was a refuge of peace and quiet.
By appearences alone, this figure, this boy of seventeen or so, seemed to be a student, dressed in a collared white shirt and slacks. A massive book was lying before him, the pages were written on, dog-eared, and sticky noted.
Books wait like no one else.
The words sit patiently on the pages, retelling their lives over and over, waiting for the right hands to fall across their surface.
Currently, the high school chemistry book sat open and waiting so patiently for the young man sitting in front of it to actually try reading it instead of sleeping on it. Mer's forehead was resting on the open pages, his dark hair falling over his face. He was snoring softly.
