Clarissa had known Johanna for quite some time now. They were both sophomores and they lived in the same dorm building, so this wasn’t to much of a surprise. The real surprise was probably how close they were. Clarissa, the ever so shy type, didn’t warm up to people very quickly. The last female she’d immediately taken a liking to was Petal Paix, her new dance instructor. Before her was Becky Carlson, the greatest roommate ever. Johanna was the third person Clarissa felt a connection too. It was that sort of deja vu feeling, that sense that she knew Johanna from some past life. It was nice, meeting people like this. Clarissa felt it made friendships much easier. Johanna, to this day, was definitely one of her closest friends. It was nice, being able to feel like a social butterfly in the classes she had with Johanna. It was perhaps the only time she ever felt like this. Perhaps Becky’s teachings and whatnot were working.
Now, she was enjoying the nice weather, lounging on one of the benches in the Baum Academy courtyard. It was one of Johanna’s favorite places and Clarissa had no problem meeting her here. It might not have been a good idea to go out in her current attire (a long sleeved v-neck and dark straight-legged jeans) with the current weather. It was rather hot but the occasional breeze was nice. Sitting in the sun, though, was definitely not helping. Clarissa stood and stretched before moving on towards the nearest tree. She sat, getting comfortable on the grass, and leaning against the tree trunk. Ah, the shade. Her brown eyes disappeared beneath her lids and she exhaled slowly, telling herself to relax. There wouldn’t be very many others out right now, anyway. They were either at the mall, probably, or working or something. They didn’t have much reason to be here, at the Courtyard.
Clarissa’s otherwise blank expression melted into a soft smile at the various, occasional noises she was hearing. Birds singing their songs, distant chatter of faraway students, busy New York traffic. Who knew the city could seem so lovely?

**** WITH MY WIDE EYES i've seen worlds that don't belong Johanna tucked a wisp of dark hair behind her ear, her front teeth tugging gently on her lip, her wide eyes peering across the courtyard. The burning sun glared above her, beads of sweat tingling on the back of her neck, but she was happy that it was hot out today. Lately, there’d been buckets of rain, and a dreary sky always made her feel uneasy. She had on her favorite dress today, light and billowing against her knees. It made her feel stronger, freer, as if nothing was holding her back.
It was strange being here…strange waking up to the sound of traffic, and not her stepmother’s chilling screams. The entire world felt quieter now. It had been months and months, and yet she hadn’t gotten used to it. She didn’t know if she’d ever get used to it. But she doubted she’d have much time to think it over. Her stepmother was cruel…but smart. And she’d have Johanna out of here the moment she concocted another plan to torture her. She shook the thought away.
Johanna never really felt like she fit in here. She felt like everyone knew some grown-up secret that she wasn’t allowed to know. When the girls in her gym class giggled in the locker rooms, what did they laugh about? When they tried so hard to get boys to notice them, boys that weren’t even nice, why did they do it? It was incredibly mind boggling to her. All these rumors, these lies, these breakups, these catfights…she could not understand why they put themselves through it. And none of those girls had made any attempt to explain it to her.
At least she had Clarissa.
Clarissa Ramone simply wasn’t like other people. Other people were loud, and bossy, and unforgiving. At least sometimes. But Clarissa was different. And out of all the people Johanna had encountered in her life, she needed at least one who was different.
Without even realizing what she was doing, Johanna begin to whistle lightly. It was a happy tune…almost hopeful.
“Hi Clairbear,” she chirped, a smile spreading across her face as she sat beside her friend. She kicked off her sandals and crossed her legs. “It’s so pretty out here today, isn’t it?”

Clarissa didn't fall asleep often and most definitely not out in public where one would find her asleep. It wasn't even that sure was tired, really. She just had a rough night, tossing and turning. Plus, it was so relaxing in the Courtyard, beneath this tree. The shade provided cooler temperature and she was cozy, sitting on the grass. It was lovely out, it was the perfect place and way to take a nap. On any other occasion, Clarissa would have done something to keep herself awake but this didn't matter today. It seemed that she worried less and less as of late. A sudden whistling broke into her dreamless sleep and she stirred, forcing her eyes open. It was much to bright, much to quickly and she blinked a couple of times, adjusting. It was so sunny.
Johanna was headed towards her, wearing a really pretty dress and just looking good, in general. She looked more relaxed than usual. It was nice to see her friend in such a good mood. Clarissa smiled as Johanna sat beside her and turned slightly, so she was facing her. "Hi, Johanna," she said, deciding to call her by her first name and not the nickname she used sometimes. Annie just didn't fit with Johanna, Clarissa had decided. Clarissa looked back out to the courtyard, the occasional butterfly above the flowers and the still constant chirping of birds. "It's absolutely lovely," she agreed, taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly. She felt like she could taste spring, could taste the warmth and joy. It was almost exhilarating, this difference in the atmosphere. "How are you today?"

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SO WHY DON'T YOU LAY RIGHT HERE LET ME JUST EASE YOUR MIND I'M GIVING YOU ALL MY TIME ! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Life was rocking right now. Becky was done with that Dickhead Rick, or was it Rob? Whatever, she was oer him, and she was dating the cutest freshman for miles around who she was 99% sure would never do anything to ever piss her off, AND she had gotten accepted to Barrie U. Oh hot dam, she was on the ball. Everything was going smooth as ice, AND the band was slowly getting whipped into shape. She was pretty sure it had something to do with that BRILLIANT new teaching strategy she told Mr. K about, too. Wow, she really didn't have anything missing in her life.
Going whistling through the halls after a very successful solo practice in one of the sound-proof rooms , Becky was all too ready to head back to the dorm to try on some of those new clothes she'd gotten over the weekend and maybe whip something up in the kitchen with Clarissa. Oooh, there was still that box of cupcake mix in the pantry. Those would be so much fun to make with her one and only, perfectly loyal and lovely roomma-
“Hi Clairbear,It’s so pretty out here today, isn’t it?”
Oh hell no. That was HER nickname for the sweet little ladybug. She would CUT whatever bitch thought they could fling around HER name for her roommate.
Head whipping toward the window, Becky scanned the courtyard for the adorable little clean freak. Somewhere out there was some hoe that decided she was closer with Clarissa than Becky. Somewhere out there was some predator trying to take away her roomie.
There, there was her poor, fragile, lovely roommate getting practically pounced on by that pale slut. Becky would have to intervene. Clarissa didn't have much time.
"HEEEEEEY! I ALMOST DIDN'T SEE YA THEE, MRS. CLEAN!" Becky practically shouted, bouncing obnoxiously over. She knew how this worked. She had been there in sophomore year when those skanky bitches had descended, and she rmember OH, how she had WISHED that some senior girl would be kind enough to help her out just like this.
"Oh, sorry. You wouldn't get it. It's an inside joke between us." Becky explained to the skinny whore trying to take away her clairbear and barely trying to mask her contempt. The smile never faded from her face though, because as mom always used to say, you bury your enemies in sick sweetness.

**** WITH MY WIDE EYES i've seen worlds that don't belong Johanna smiled. She loved how they talked…like a little tea party. No one else talked like this in high school. It was always “fuck this” or “look at this shit,” and in all honestly, it hurt her ears. Why couldn’t everyone just be nice?
Another thing she hated about high school students, is how they complained. Nothing was ever good enough for them, and they actually liked the attention. Wahh my life sucks and everyone hates me… or Wahh…no one understands me. It drove Johanna absolutely crazy. They didn’t even know what they were talking about, and they needed to learn to deal with their issues. They were all so loud, and screechy, and annoying and…
"HEEEEEEY! I ALMOST DIDN'T SEE YA THEE, MRS. CLEAN!"
Johanna almost jumped right out of her skin. What…in the world…was that?
Her eyes lifted curiously to see a tall girl with long hair. A girl that seemed just a tad bit…crazy. She watched, wide eyed, as this girl bounced on over to her friend, screaming her head off, babbling something about an inside joke. She was honestly confused and shocked by this, but she didn’t want to be rude.
“Oh…” she murmured, a smile spreading across her face. “That’s so cute!”
She let out a little giggle, and then blushed when she realized she sounded like an idiot. Johanna remembered this girl now. Becky. Her and Clarissa were good friends, apparently. Johanna didn’t really understand why, considering how different they were.
She’d always had this feeling that Becky didn’t like her. She didn’t really know where it came from…but something about Becky’s haughty little smiles did not seem genuine. Johanna really didn’t know how to deal with this. She was used to being disliked, but she couldn’t see a reason why Becky would feel that way. She didn’t hate Becky. In fact, she sort of thought she was cool…loud, perhaps…but at least she was assertive.
A sudden idea popped into her head. Becky was really into music, and Johanna could definitely appreciate that. Maybe, just maybe she could make this work.
“By the way…” she said softly. “I was thinking of joining band. I don’t really…play for people that much. But I heard you were looking for more flutes.”

Before Johanna could answer Clarissa’s question, there was a girl screaming and Clarissa totally knew the voice. Oh jeez. Oh dear. Oh no, oh no, oh boy. Becky and Johanna were probably complete opposites. Becky was loud, outgoing and she had a sweet tooth for revenge. Johanna was quiet, sweet, and worked at an animal shelter. Complete and total opposites. Clarissa looked around for Becky and found that the girl had made her way over, energetic and obnoxious. She managed a meager half-smile. Mrs. Clean? Where had that come from? An inside joke? Okay, just because Clarissa cleaned a lot didn’t mean she needed a nickname, right? Right? Oh God, she cleaned so much, it had earned her nickname. Oh no, oh great, oh fantastic. This was SO embarrassing. Trying to ignore the fact that she was probably blushing by now, Clarissa looked to Johanna.
The sophomore was taking it well enough, anyway. “Uhm. Becky, this is Johanna. Johanna, Becky is my roommate.” Clarissa toyed with her bracelet, hoping the encounter would be peaceful. Becky had that smile on her face, that fake grin she used when she was actually really mad. Clarissa knew that smile. Becky sometimes wore it when she came back to the dorm. Clarissa would ask what happened and she would be right about the smile being a mask. It was nice, though, knowing her roommate well enough to recognize this. On the other hand, it probably wasn’t a good thing that she was smiling like that now. That meant she probably had a problem with Johanna even if they’d just met. Clarissa looked to Johanna as she spoke. Oh thank goodness! She had something in common with Becky. Phew. Okay. Better. This would be fine.
