...basics*
name Mary Anne Spencer
nickname May, Mare, The Governess
age Eighteen years old, thank you, though you simply must know that it's quite rude to ask a lady her age
gender Female
grade A Senior at the most prestigious and refined Baum Acadmey, which you surely know accepts only the best and brightest.
hometownHartland, Devon in England. Never heard of it? Well, it's quite a quaint old town, and quite lovely too. Y'know, they raise people differently across the pond. People back home had something called MANNERS. It may be something you Americans wish to look up.
sexuality Heterosexual.
personification The Red Queen
status Dormant
face claimKeira Knighley
...appearance*
hair Mary Anne keeps her hair at a respecatble length and immaculately washed. It's always been her natural color, which is a lovely, honey shade of brown, though that tends to shift a bit with the seasons and exposure to light, of course. Long story short, is, she has quite lovely hair, not like those trashy styles you see on SOME girls nowadays.
eye color Once again, quite a lovely shade of brown for this girl. She doesn't put up with the foolishness some girls subject themselves to, like those colored contacts or lens-less glasses or what have you.
build Though it's impossible to tell what you're getting at, she can ASSURE you, that her body is quite svelte and lean, and that she gets all the exercise she needs, thank you very much, and she has worked AWFULLY hard to get such a fine body, and she doesn't need any of your skeptical questions pertaining to her body image!
height 5'7"
clothing style Unlike SOME hooligans in this day and age, Mary Anne is not known for wearing any of those frankly appalling fashion pieces. She firmly adheres to a wardrobe of modest clothing mostly consisting of basic, plain colors. She doesn't see the need or appeal of vibrant flashy colors. She thinks they quite detract from class time and are not suited for a lady.
distinctive traits When she sits, Mary Anne has abnormally straight posture and ALWAYS crosses her legs in order to avoid being immodest.

personality
Mary Anne has deduced that, as far as she had seen of American society, she is one of the only people left alive who had been raised with anything close to proper manners or etiquette. As far as she can tell, there are hardly ANY other Americans who had been raised the proper way; who had been told to always say "Please" and "Thank You;" to expect the man to open doors for her and pay for a date. No, nowadays everyone is just a rude, senseless boor, all lecherously trying to get a peek at some girl's panties. It's disgusting, really, that Mary Anne has to try SO HARD just to get people to pay attention to the fact that lest they abandon their hedonistic ways they are doomed to an eternity of suffering! It's just one ring! One beautiful, silver ring and a promise to retain virginity until marriage! Is that so much to ask?
Now, knowing that she is in fact from a much higher quality stock than the ignorant American pigs she has to put up with on a daily basis, Mary Anne finds herself feeling quite superior to the common man. She feels that she is a martyr for her cause, living among the damned in order to help save at least a few poor souls before she finishes her schooling and can return to her home.
Due to her disapproval of nearly all things, Mary Anne is generally in a rather poor mood. She can come off as extremely abrasive due to her nasty habit of correcting one's grammar, manners and anything else she can find problems with. She believes that in other people, there is ALWAYS room for improvement.
past
The elder of a set of twins, Mary Anne was born a proper Brit. A tea salesman for a father and a fashionable wedding gown designer for a mother, Mary Anne as raised with a proper set of morals and manners. Well, she was raised by them when her parents were around and hadn't let the twins and their subsequent sister to be brought up by various and sundry nannies. However, when they were around, they were sure to instill in their eldest daughter (which she had no problem reminding her sisters of) a deep-set knowledge of all things etiquette. She took to it, learning with ease the proper use of each spoon, and how she was NEVER supposed to mention gifts on invitations she sent out of ANY nature. It was simple for her, really.
In quite the same way, she took to her religion. Every Sunday she would happily be taken off to church with the rest of the family, dressed modestly as she was expected to, and listen with great interest to the sermon. While it seemed that dear Lizzie rarely understood and Georgianna rarely paid attention or could keep herself from fidgeting so horribly, Mary Anne soaked up every last word that was preached to her. It all made so much sense to her. The rules of etiquette and the rules of the lord just gave the universe meaning. It set up clear do's and dont's for how she ought to run her life, and she was able to abide by them without incident.
There were, of course, certain people who clearly COULDN'T abide by such rules. Georgianna was constantly giving Mary Anne awful headaches with her noise and her impudence and her inability to simply do as she was told! It honestly put her on edge to know that there was someone who could so CLEARLY break the rules that made everything else in the universe work so wonderfully. Sure, there was some name-calling. SURE, there were some harsh bouts of screaming, but any proper British lady would have been reduced to the same levels of rudeness had they been in Mary Anne's place and been exposed to the wretched mess that was Georgianna.
present Upon hearing that the family was being uprooted and brought to the United States, Mary Anne had an absolute breakdown. She screamed and cried and beat her pillow for days, and for at least a week after the move she refused to speak to anyone, much to the delight of her younger sister. While she has gradually come to accept her fate, she stil proudly hangs the proper Union Jack on her bedroom wall and tunes in to every session of Prime Minister's Questions in order to catch up on what's going on back in dear old England.
Currently, Mary Anne is attempting to make the best of her situation. She has risen towards the top of her class (She knows that she could dominate if she tried, because those stupid Americans clearly could NEVER give her a REAL run for her money, but she honestly just doesn't have the time to put forth the effort to do so. Other activities take up so much time! Besides, she's quite content to stay in the top ten) and run the Celibacy club for the second year in a row at this point. She wears her Silver Abstinence Ring with pride, and honestly has never had a boyfriend or kissed or done the unspeakable with any man. She spends a great deal of her time organizing new events to stop such shenanigans in her peers.
family
Albert Spencer - Father - quite a lovely old chap in the Tea business
Victoria Spencer - Mother - simply the most DELIGHTFUL wedding gown designer this side of the pond
Elizabeth Spencer - Twin Sister - not exactly the brightest of bulbs, but a dear all the same and, as far as Mary Anne is concerned, QUITE a looker.
Georgianna Spencer - Younger Sister - Quite a shame and disgrace to the family, what with her rule breaking and inability to follow instructions. If you ask Mary Anne she'll tell you that Georgianna is not likely to amount to much of anything, which is quite a pity because she had such good breeding and upbringing in proper British society, and has truly wasted a wondrous life of opportunities.

book title Through the Looking Glass
backstory The Red Queen, often mixed up with the Queen of Hearts featured in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is the technical villain of Through the Looking Glass. Though she is Alice's adversary as the opposing Queen, she gives Alice help and advice in the beginning and upon Alice's arrival at the final square. She acts very uptight and superior, grilling Alice with questions just to prove that she knows more than the young girl. She also is obscenely bossy, insisting on being the only one to give orders at the feast held in Alice's honor.
