Rebekah is a clumsy, awkward, uncertain teenage girl. Her mother expects too much of her, she isn't graceful and polite like her many cousins. She is self-conscious, shy and mainly pretty quiet. She's really bursting to throw a tantrum about some things, even though it isn't ladylike.
She is extremely embarrassed of her inadequacies and attempts to replace them with other things. Many times she tries out different things and fails miserably, mainly because she tries too hard to be "one of the guys". However, she is stubborn and brave and keeps trying until she gets it right.
Rebekah is somewhat self-loathing. She tries to live up to her mother's expectations but ends up making a mess of things and sees herself as the one in the family who ruins everything.

Her parents were delighted with their little girl. Of course, Roger was even more delighted when Rebekah grew, enjoying fishing and tennis shoes more than dresses and painting nails. Eun Jae was not so pleased, having grown up in a family that very much valued tradition and instilled a "woman's place" view.
She always fit in pretty well with the boys in her class, since the girls liked to tease her about how non-girly she was. She was accepted by the boys, but it was hard for her to keep up with them.

Shortly after, the Chinese emperor's counselor, Chi Fu, arrives in her village to announce that the deadly Huns, led by Shan Yu, have invaded China, and that one man in every family must serve in the war. Despite her protests, her father, a famed war veteran named Fa Zhou, says that he will go (in spite of his old age and crippled body). Mulan decides to go in his place posing as a man, cutting her long hair short with a sword and stealing her father's armor and rides away on her horse, Khan, so she will keep him from risking his life.
