personality
Jack is a very artistic person, to say the least. Even though he has an undeniable passion for the art of illusion, that doesn’t exactly mean he is exempt from the other forms of art, such as music, visual art, and above all, dance. Jack had always loved to dance, and has a fantastic voice, although he rarely has a chance to show it. Magic shows rarely have a need for singing, so whenever he has time, Jack sometimes holds small private concerts on his guitar (or, maybe sometimes, his piano). Whether they are at his apartment in the city or in the park somewhere varies, but Jack’s hidden talent is well kept, until people would start going gaga over it like they did his magic. When people couldn’t afford to be such fan girls, Jack didn’t know.
Jack is, in contrast to his artistic side, very intelligent and reasonable. He is neither optimistic nor pessimist, but somewhere in between. He is an avid atheist, and prefers to stay that way since he does not like to be involved in anything political or religious except if it is absolutely necessary. However, besides religion and politics, Jack doesn’t mind talking about anything else, and may even include himself in a debate or two every once in a while, as long as it is over a decent subject. Nothing petty, but nothing so overly important like the government or global warming. It was times like these where Jack preferred to remain oblivious to what was going on, instead focusing on his own career and distinctly having nothing to do with the world around him. Unless it interfered with his profits. Then there were problems.
Yet despite this, Jack isn’t greedy. In fact, he’s nowhere near it. He is actually a very charitable person, and even sometimes sends portions of his profits to good causes like the Make a Wish Foundation (since he only recently found out that there was one in New York… heck, there was one of everything in New York! He was going to have to get used to this…) and almost always thinks of others first before himself, which includes his crew and his audience.
The main characteristic about Jack, though, is that he is a naturally dark person. He likes to make his shows as dark, exotic, and just plain scary as possible while still keeping an upbeat tone. This would be normally hard to do if it were not a magic show at the same time, and the torture chamber trick would never get old… unless done wrong. Then, it would be an incredibly scary reality. But hopefully, that wouldn’t happen because most of his crew was very experienced. But at the same time, it would make for a very memorable show, no matter how much pain Jack would get himself in. That was what he primarily aimed for - being a unique show in himself (and his crew, of course) and having ridiculously scary fun. Plus, it gave him an excuse to dress exotically for the stage, and who would turn down that chance?
If there was anything Jack was going to have trouble with, it was going to be keeping up with the high demand in this huge city. There were just so many people to impress, and so much competition to boot. It is because of this that sometimes Jack becomes nervous about his career and whether or not he was going to be run down and pounded into the dirt by the bigger and better stars of the city. That was his worst fear, because if there was something one needed to know about Jack, it’s that he hates competition with a passion. He just doesn’t see the point of it like most people do. Jack is more concerned about doing what he loves and making people happy than making money and being the very best magician ever.
Yep, New York City was going to devour him, and spit his bones back out…
past
For as long as he could remember, Jack wanted to be a magician. Ever since he was born and raised in a previously-unknown New York town, he had been awed and allured by the power of illusion, and he always wanted to find out what exactly their secret was. That was the thing - even though Jack was as observant as he was, he could never catch a glance at the strings behind the seemingly impossible feats.
It was because of this intricate desire that his parents continuously took him to see touring magicians, no matter how professional or amateur. His family was of moderate wealth, so Jack could have access to anything within reason as long as he was willing to wait a certain amount of time (a year, at the most). While he breezed through school, Jack's primary objective was to do some research on optical illusions and the people who have mastered them. It wasn't until he was out of school, though, that he actually started his career, and the results were highly in his favor.
He quickly grew (in)famous in his small town, and just about every one of his fans instantly urged him to shoot for bigger fame since it was clearly apparent that his hometown was too small and not worthy enough for his talent. This was so because he was indeed, if this was not implied before, a talented illusionist, perhaps one to even someday rival Houdini himself. The only direction he could go was up, they told him, or in this case, southwest. Southwest to New York City, where he would most likely get his big break.
present
Jack had waited a while before heading to New York, but after traveling the state and leaving several areas of the state (and some of the surrounding states) in awe, NYC was the one place he couldn't NOT go. So after he gathered up his traveling band and the huge profit he had made in the rest of the state, Jack loaded the van, received good-luck wishes from his family and friends, and tied his hair up on top of his head before heading off to the City That Never Sleeps.
... Wait, wasn't that Las Vegas?
Whatever.
Jack and his crew are now residing in an apartment in the heart of the city, waiting for an opportune moment to perform at a club, theater, maybe even an event at the nearby "Baum Academy" sometime soon, if schedules permit.

...literature*
book title The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
backstory Besides Sleepy Hollow, the Headless Horseman plays a role in many other stories, often varied versions of the classic tale. Despite the various perspective of this feared creature, they all have the same basic concept.
The Headless Horseman was rumored to be the spirit of a Revolutionary War soldier who was killed by decapitation near the main setting of the story, and whose spirit roams the town of Sleepy Hollow, always ready a-head (Sorry, couldn't resist. xD) of time for battle. It was from this famous monster that the informidable Ichabod Crane was running from in the ever-so-famous chase that likely led to Ichabod's demise.
Where the various stories differ is the confirmation of the Horseman's true identity - whether he was actually a ghost or Crane's rival, Bram van Brant. For the sake of this RP, though, the Horseman is actually a ghost and not a human being in disguise. In some portrayals, the Horseman is seen with a pumpkin in place of his head, the most famous being the Disney version of the story, where this concept could have originated.

Eric was one of the only students who didn't leave the auditorium right away. He had stayed backstage to read through his scriptbook a few more times to let what was happening in the play sink in. He didn't want to be in this show. He stressed this to himself several times, but he had no choice but to do the best he could. Most of the time, he had no choice what he did. Besides, there was always someone out there who could make better decisions than him. That was what his parents and Constance implied, anyway.
Eric was about to grimace in disgust at the complexity and the excessive slang of the script when he heard something peculiar coming from the stage.
Ave Maria~
It was beautiful. Simply beautiful. Eric couldn't even find the words to describe it in his mind. It was an angel's voice. An angel of music, possibly.
Ave Maria~
He had to find who or whatever was making this beautiful noise. Because if it was simply a radio or CD player that someone had left on, Eric would he incredibly disappointed. The voice was too rich, too soft, and too pleasant not for him to hear in person. It was too fragile, too delicate, too light for any modern artist to replicate.
Ave Maria~
When Eric was behind the edge of the curtain, he peeked out to see Micah at the piano. She couldn't possibly be lip-synching, could she? It wasn't possible, but it was too good to be true. The voice was so beautiful, it was barely possible for it to be real. Eric had to accept that fact. Yet despite this, he could find no electrical cord to the CD player that she would be singing from. That was his ultimate proof, whether the voice was legit or not.
Ave Maria~
Eric, too shy to confront Micah personally and interrupt that masterpiece, quickly darted toward the stairs to the balcony. He didn't want her to know he was there, but as he fled among the shadows toward the staircase, he felt a need to contribute to it. There was only one way to make this song more beautiful than it already was, and that was to add a harmony.
Ave Maria~
Upon reaching the top of the staircase toward the balcony, Eric quietly walked toward the edge where he would get the closest view of Micah's performance, and then softly started adding in his own input; his harmony.
Ave Maria~ (Ave Maria~)
It started out soft, but the more he sang and the better the harmony sounded, the more he projected...
Ave Maria~ (Ave Maria~)
Ave Maria~ (Ave Maria~)
... until their echoes in the gym mixed and mingled, and both parts could be heard clearly.
Ave Maria~ (Ave Maria~)
Ave Maria~ (Ave Maria~)
Ave Maria~ (Ave Maria~)
Eric only hoped she wouldn't be too embarrassed to keep singing.
