...personal*
personality Gretchen is always a force to be reckoned with. She is forthcoming and direct; she is not the type of shrink who just nods and listens, but tries to give you useful advice. Which is where she tends to fall into trouble. She is always giving advice, and always thinks she is right. Her Father use to comment that she should have been born a boy, because her shrewdness would have made her a fierce competitor in taking over the Family business (much to the disdain of poor Garrett). And it is true, she is a skilled at business, and has an intense sense of duty to her over bearing Father.
She is a bit of a Tomboy, and is not afraid to get her hands dirty. Gretchen enjoys gardening, as that seems to be a prerequisite in being in the Beare family, and has a deep appreciation for flowers. Despite her Father's slightly misogynistic points of view, she has become quite accomplished in the field of psychology, including writing two books on Self Destructive Behaviors.
past Edward and Elizabeth Beare really loved each other, despite how little they had in common. He was a gruff man, shrewd in business, who made a fortune with his bare hands, who set bear traps in his work shed at home to 'Keep those damn kids out'. She was soft spoken, gentle, and polite; wearing little white gloves on Sunday and baring a quiet smile. She'd tell Edward: "Darling, you need to start being nice to people, because if you don't, you'll become old and no one will want to visit you. And that would be terribly sad." when he became to harsh, and it seemed to mellow the determined young man. When Elizabeth became pregnant, her happiness was complete, and so was Edward's because he wanted so very much for Elizabeth to be happy.
And they had Gretchen, who despite her unfortunate name, was incredibly blessed. Elizabeth wanted to fill the house to the brim with children, but the doctors told the Beare family the unhappy news that it was unlikely for Elizabeth to have anymore children due to damage done by Gretchen in the womb. So the family soldiered on, and Gretch began to grow into a sarcastic and rebellious child; Though her doting Father chose to use the term 'Spirited'. When Gretchen turned seven, a miracle happened! Elizabeth became pregnant again. The infant that grew in her tummy, which would one day be the harsh and callous Garrett Beare, was called Miracle by the family. What's more, Edward was thrilled to hear that the child was a boy, someone to carry on the Beare name.
But what Elizabeth kept quiet was the Doctor's exact words. Not that she couldn't conceive, but that she shouldn't. And these words came forth in full bloom on the day of Garrett's birth, when Elizabeth Anne Beare died of from childbirth complications. On what was suppose to be a happy occasion for the family, it became clouded with the darkness of their Matriarchs death.
The family became instantly less warm. Edward consumed himself in work, leaving his children in the care of Nannies and whatnot, eventually boarding school. The children resented each other: Gretchen not wanting to play Mother to her little brother, and a fair share of the tough love, and Garrett not wanting his sisters interference and some of her sugar coated affection. With the death of Elizabeth, the family was left broken.
present Currently Gretchen is moving back to New York, after she canceled her second engagement in California. She's set up a little brownstone, and looks forward to seeing her younger brother. Despite their age difference and the animosity between them, she plans to attempt and kindle a bond between them.
Her Father's hope is that she will FINALLY get married and settle down, but not too likely.
