...personal*
personality Adrian, for all he’s done, is still innocent enough to be easily influenced, and doesn’t really have a moral code he can rely on. He’s wracked with guilt from Sybil and Basil’s deaths, though he sometimes blames them for it – as his moral system wars with itself, he has problems making important decisions and is very, very indecisive.
He’s a sophisticate, and enjoys lavishing the finer things in life on himself: opera, renting theatre boxes, expensive cigarettes, wine, and bumming out in front of his television. Given his wealth he can get away with it all, and then some. Since breaking up with Sybil, it hasn’t been hard for Adrian to find a girlfriend, though he’s had problems keeping them – an argument or two easily spirals into a breakup, and (through some mystical force) all of the girls are usually depressed for a long time afterwards.
However, since Basil’s murder, Adrian’s lost his taste for pleasure. Right now, he’s a jumbled mess of fear, remorse, anger and conflicting morals.
past Adrian was born the son of one aristocratic Margie Devereux and the poor soldier she’d eloped with. His father was killed in a barfight before he was born, and his mother sent back to live with his grandfather until she died in childbirth.
He was raised by his grandfather in a more-or-less sheltered life, in a large, comfortable London mansion. The Lovett family, besides descending for aristocracy, also owned a holding company – money to Adrian had always flowed freely whenever he’d needed it. When the old man passed away, he ventured out into the world and discovered Basil, a professional studio photographer. Agreeing to model for him, Adrian received a life-sized portrait photo as a gift, which he began to hang in his room.
Soon after, he met Sybil, a young stage actress. A relative nobody working in obscure productions, Adrian was nonetheless smitten by her acting. They began dating after he introduced himself to her, though she refused to call him anything but ‘Prince Charming’. Though Sybil was a talented actress, her acting skills worsened as their relationship continued – she hadn’t been able to concentrate or even remember her lines.
One night after the worst performance he’d ever seen her in, Adrian confronted her. He’d loved her for her acting skill, and now, he’d decided, it was best they went their separate ways. He’d refused her calls, turned away her visits and rejected her ‘Sorry’ cards for weeks afterwards. Apparently, the breakup had been too much for her – the police found Sybil dead from a sleeping pill overdose a month later, as Adrian was courting his third girlfriend.
After Sybil’s death, the portrait photograph began to change; there was a new smirk of malice on the portrait’s face. Suspicious of this, Basil began to question his model. Feeling equally confused by the portrait as he felt guilty, Adrian kept silent.
Working by himself, Basil began piecing together Adrian rejection of Sybil, to a point where Adrian felt the only escape from justice would be to silence Basil once and for all.
In a moment of panic, he’d stabbed the photographer. He’d had body dumped somewhere secluded – given Basil’s quiet ways, he wouldn’t be missed for months. The best way to escape the consequences of Sybil’s death, and now Basil’s, Adrian reasoned, was to leave London before any more people grew suspicious.
Silently, Adrian bought himself a ticket to New York, packed up the portrait, and made to move.
present Adrian’s been living in New York for a month now, each day feeling guilty for what he’s done. He managed to make his dwelling in a large, airy studio in the Jacob’s Apartment complex, with the portrait hanging in a back room he keeps under lock and key.
Still holding onto the family holdings company thanks to some financial trickery (he switched about his bank accounts and used several pen-names), Adrian’s been able to provide for himself more than lavishly – the television in his studio is no less than one and a half metres across – and probably won’t have problems with money in the near future. Which is all well and good, though he hasn’t left the apartment since he first entered it.
He spends much of his time following the news with paranoid fervour – however, Basil’s disappearance has yet to cause so much as a stir.
The portrait, since Basil’s death, now has what looks like blood smeared across its hands – a phenomenon that Adrian’s been having problems understanding. It’s also been looking more and more haggard with time, almost as if it’s aging in his place.

other notes He talks in his sleep. Most of it goes along the lines of: “It’s not my fault”. Some of it, however, is just nonsensical enough to qualify as comedy material (e.g. “You’re so ugly, I want to use your face to clean my toilet bowl,”)
...literature*
book title A Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde).
backstory Dorian Gray is a young and handsome British aristocrat who agrees to pose for a painting by the artist basil Hallward. Influenced by Lord Henry Wotton to believe only beauty and youth should be valued, Dorian becomes upset that Basil’s painting will never change while he grows old and ugly. He then wishes he could sell his soul (yes, damn, you read that right!) for the portrait to age for him.
His wish is granted and the portrait starts to age. It also records all the wicked things he ever does – upon the death of his girlfriend Sybil, it smirks, and when he kills Basil, its hands become covered in blood – until he can’t bear to see it’s ugliness anymore and stabs the painting. When the servants find him stabbed dead and ugly the next day, the painting has been restored back to its original beauty.
