SO WHAT IF YOU CAN SEETHE DARK INSIDE OF ME?NO ONE WILL EVER TAMETHIS ANIMAL I HAVE BECOMEGarrett breathed in the chilly air. it was obvious that spring was on the way, he could smell it in the air around him, but he didn't care, The ice skating rink was open for now and he had made it one of his yearly goals to learn to ice skate, damnit, and he would NOT procrastinate and leave that till the end of the year to learn.
Garrett supposed that it was rather strange how he assigned himself a goal at the beginning of the year. Sure, everyone else did it as well with their "new years resolutions" but their's were all "I'll lose 20 pounds!" or "I'll be nicer!" Garrett didn't go for any of that. he was constantly trying to better himself, and damnit, he would NOT let those little bastard skates get the best of him.
It had started out with the aimless chatter in the office always revolving around "Oh, I'm going SKATING tonight! Isn't that romantic/beautiful/ stiflingly adorable?" Normally, Garrett wouldn't care what the hell his worker's plans for after work were (Unless they included grand theft and larceny from the Last Petal, but that was another story) but this...this annoyed him. His idiot workers had a skill that HE didn't and it niggled at the inner workings of his mind until he knew, he KNEWQ he would learn how to do it.
So here he was, clutching the rim of the rink like a drowning kitten, his feet spasmodically splaying out from underneath him at every chance they got. Good Lord, this was an unholy activity. Now he remembered why he had never bothered to learn this before. THERE WAS NO POINT TO IT! It was a stupid activity. No one would ever choose to do this!
Falling in what was quite possibly the least graceful event in all of human history, Garrett suddenly found himself on his back on the ice, amidst stifled laughter from several passersby.Hands clenching into fists, he simply laid there, realizing that no matter how he tried to get up he would just fall again. What was the point?

i'm gonna love you 'til the end of the timesomehow two hearts have made a friend of time Ah, ice skating. It was something she would never tire of. Her first time had been at a lake, frozen over due to the icy temperatures of winter. Her father had taken time out of his inventions to teach her how to ice skate. She’d been ecstatic in her new pair of skates and all bundled up in her mittens and extra socks. It’d been tough at first. But then, once she got the hang of it, Summer was a natural. She slid around, feeling light and free, doing figure eights around her dad. It was the best day of her eight-year old life. It felt so great to be at the Rockefeller Center. It wasn’t as chilly as Caro, Michigan but the cold got to her easily and so she’d bundled up. Well, sort of. Her hands and feet were the quickest to freeze so she wore mittens and two pairs of socks. Tying the skates’ laces, she stood and looked out at the rink. Mostly couples and families. Summer wished suddenly that she’d invited her father. Oh well…
Summer made her way onto the ice, shaky at first but easily gaining balance. She began to skate around, feeling just as light and free as she did eleven years ago. It took quite a bit of her willpower to resist skating around others, laughing childishly, and twirling herself sick. Summer really did feel like an eight-year old again. Then she saw somebody that made her feel the exact opposite of eight and she almost slipped in her surprise. Garrett Beare, her boss, was ice skating. Well, he was trying to ice skate. It was a sight to see, actually. The screaming guy she knew was stumbling about and clinging to the side of the rink. Summer snickered just as he fell, rather ungracefully, and opted to lay there instead of getting up. She shook her head and skated towards him, feeling a bit sorry for him.
"Well, well, well… " Summer started, slowing to a stop beside him. She peered down at him and couldn’t help but to grin. She rarely saw her boss so… vulnerable. "I‘m guessing this is your first time, " she added, offering her hand. Summer was hoping he'd accept her help. They weren't at work right now, anyway, so he shouldn't feel all superior and bossy. Besides, it could be fun, teaching him to skate.

SO WHAT IF YOU CAN SEETHE DARK INSIDE OF ME?NO ONE WILL EVER TAME THIS ANIMAL I HAVE BECOMEGarrett was starting to feel the cold of the ice seep into his body through his clothes when there was the unmistakable sound of more experienced skates skidding to a halt beside his head. He quickly shot his eyes towards the new character on the scene, praying it wasn't some kind of ice skating police here to arrest him for being a nuisance in the rink. He REALLY did not want to have to spend a night arguing with the idiot policemen down at the station for the rest of the night, pointing out exactly where they were wrong and building a case for his lawsuit to be based on.
Whether it was for better or worse Garrett couldn't tell, but instead of some kind of burly skating brute he was confronted by the creepily positive yet somehow also sarcastic face of Summer Sinclair.
"Well, well, well… I‘m guessing this is your first time. "
Garrett quickly scrambled to his knees, not daring to attempt anything more for fear of falling but having no intention of being caught DEAD in any position that seemed even a smidgen less intimidating than the one he always held at work. The real world was just a larger version of the business community. He could never let his persona that commanded so much attention waiver, not even for an instant.
"NO! I mean. No. Of course not. This rink is just... so horribly kept. It's difficult for a professional skater such as me to deal with such... obscene settings."
He looked with disdain on the idiotic, stupid ice, praying that his lie didn't show through his act. It was incredibly tough to show off as a ballsy, macho boss while flailing on slick ice in front of an employee.
Next year's goal would be something easier.

i'm gonna love you 'til the end of the timesomehow two hearts have made a friend of time Summer pulled her hand back and crossed her arms over her chest. He didn't sound very sure. He wasn't, she figured. Summer was a complete pro at skating and she knew a newbie when she saw one. She glanced around and saw that most of the skaters were pretty good at this. So, according to Garrett's logic, they weren't professional as they could deal with the "obscene settings" of the rink. Or was that her logic? Summer shook her head and looked back to Garrett who was on his knees now. Could he not even stand? That's what her hand had been for. She'd been trying to help. It was almost frustrating that he always had to do things on his own. Plus the fact that he was such a grump all the time.
"The rink looks fine to me," she said, arms still crossed and her tone sounding rather annoyed. "I'm just trying to help." The words had left her mouth without much thought and she wouldn't be surprised if this backfired. He wasn't going to want her help. Summer held her hands up, as if preparing to say 'now wait a minute' for when he would inevitably starting yelling at her. "I mean, if you can handle this on your own, I can leave..." Well, not leave, leave. She was still going to skate. How long had she been here? Less than 20 minutes, maybe. Definitely not enough time to skate and reminisce. A nice mug of hot chocolate afterwards sounded nice. As an afterthought to her previous statement, she offered one of her hands again. Summer didn't really want to give up on this...

"The rink looks fine to me. I'm just trying to help. I mean, if you can handle this on your own, I can leave..."
Garrett weighed his options. On the one hand, he could just lie here on the ice and not really learn anything about skating until the police or security or whatever it was that worked at skate rinks came to scrape him off the ice..ho would keep the information to herself, that he actually was incapable of skating.
Well, not INCAPABLE. He would think of something. Some excuse. Anyway, he could tell her, and perhaps learn more and finish that damned New Years resolution before it was too late.
He could tell that she was about to skate away. Damnit, he needed to decide now. he hated deciding. It was the bane of his existence.
"Wait! I....I suppose that I may be having some difficulty that isn't entirely due to the atrocious upkeep of the rink. I... I would.... I would appreciate you assistance."
He did his best to scramble to his feet, hands immediately latching a death grip onto the rink rim.
"But if you tell a SOUL about this,"He managed to choke out as his feet started to slip out from beneath him, "Mark my words, I will hunt you down."

i'm gonna love you 'til the end of the timesomehow two hearts have made a friend of time As he made up his mind, Summer looked around once more. People were starting to stare and it was sort of embarrassing. Didn’t they have better things to do? Like, oh, maybe skate? She rolled her eyes and skated backwards for a moment before returning to where Garrett was. She was starting to get fidgety. It wasn’t really like her to be so, but oh well. Things were just weird, lately. She’d been reading more and the books she’d been grabbing were fairytales. Things by Hans Christian Anderson like The Little Mermaid which she knew Disney had made into a movie. Those other classics, too, like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Snow White. Summer had never before showed an express interest in the stories but, for some reason, she was venturing to that part of the library more often. Summer pushed the thoughts to the back of her mind because Garrett was speaking. Really, she thought to much.
She realized he was standing now, clutching the rim of the rink. It seemed he was having a lot of trouble accepting her help. She wasn’t surprised, really. He was quite stubborn. “Okay. Good. My lips are sealed,
” she pretended to zip her lips and throw the key behind her before skating up beside him. Now then. How did she want to go about this? Hands on her hips, again, Summer resisted a sarcastic grin. “ You’re going to have to let go of the rim.” Her tone was going to get her a nice glare but she wasn’t scared of him. Summer held her arm out incase he'd need something to hold onto (which he probably would) and waited patiently. i'm gonna love you 'til the end of the timesomehow two hearts have made a friend of time Summer was getting antsy. That never really happened. She was normally quite patient and still. But he was being difficult and paranoid, it seemed. Summer sighed and let her arm fall to her side. A way to skate that doesn’t involve falling. Really, Garrett? Really? A person new to ice skating was going to fall. It did not matter the ‘way’ they skated. Falling was part of the learning process. By falling, you tried that much harder to avoid it. That’s what her father had taught her, anyway. “You’re new to skating. You are going to fall whether you like it or not,” she told him, voicing her thoughts and trying not to sound so condescending. Summer tried to remember how her father had taught her. First, he’d had her practice walking on the rubber mats beside the rink. Summer wasn’t sure if Garrett had done that but she knew he wouldn’t do so now, anyway. Then… Oh! Her father had had her try walking on the ice, next, while holding onto the rim.
“Okay. Fine. You can hold onto the rim. You’re going to practice walking on the ice.” She realized how silly that sounded. You’ve been walking nearly your whole life; why would you need to practice? “I mean, you’re so intent on not letting go of the rim anyway.” Again with the tone. She was so going to get fired for this. “But if that seems to simple and if you’re willing to let go, you can practice balancing,” she suggested. Summer folded her arms over her chest and waited, unsure of what he’d want to do next. Should she stop ranting? Should she stop making a bunch of suggestions? Probably. She was getting ahead of herself. “Sorry. I’ll shut up.” Summer rolled her sleeves up to her elbows and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Patience was a virtue.

SO WHAT IF YOU CAN SEETHE DARK INSIDE OF ME?NO ONE WILL EVER TAMETHIS ANIMAL I HAVE BECOME It was absolute idiocy that he was expected to go through with this madness. Why couldn't she just leave him be and let him silently get tormented by the trials and tribulations of ice skating? This way, with her standing there like some kind of concerned adult keeping watch over a particularly rambunctious child who might run off and skin his knee or start beating up the other kids. It was humilating, really He was sure that if he didn't have her with him there would be far less people shooting furtive glances to figure out what was going on with them. He was sure that it was all entirely her fault that they were making a scene out in public like this. It was CERTAINLY all HER fault that they were going to drum up negative publicity when the common folk saw such a spectacle being made of a prominent business leader!(WIP)
