...personal*
personality Manuel is harsh, and he almost always has his head in the past. In his prime, he was quite the player, but he eventually got over it when Isabelle's mother died. He would never admit it, but Nelle Brookes was his favorite wife, and when she died he didn't really feel like getting back into the dating scene. Well, not ALL of his daughters had different mothers –he'd only had three wives. One was a psychopath, the other one just blabbed too much, and well, the third one just up and died.
Well, there was this one-night thing that eventually led to April being born...
Anyways. Manuel is fiercely protective of all his girls, but there have been several accusations that he especially has a soft spot for Isabelle, his youngest and (he would argue) prettiest. She has always been Daddy's little girl, the one that seemed to like him the most. All of his other girls grew up too fast, too quickly wanted to leave home and make a name for themselves. And she was such a good swimmer too! Which was definitely a bonus, since he LOVES swimming. He doesn't really know why -it just seemed to be his haven when he got kicked out of the army.
Manuel is loud and sometimes cranky. He runs his swimming team like a boot camp (and incidentally, boot camp days were some of his greatest days alive, he says). Sure, he's not always so hard --he still gives good pointers, and depending on his mood, is willing to slow things down at practice or work on his struggling pupils one-on-one --but some days you just wonder why he is such a bullhorn.
He often thinks technology is stupid, and that it is making the new generation too soft. He is always saying how back in his days, a sharp mind and a sharp body was all he needed to get where he is today. His mind is always back in the past, when he was in his prime and not...well, "crippled" as he calls it.
He is brutal and a bit pushy, but behind all those thorns you can find some mush...eventually. Especially when it comes to his girls. And...oh, let's face it, he's pretty vain and show-offy when it comes to his body.
past Manuel always knew that, from the start, he would be in the army, just like his papa. The army movies circling around in his day inspired him, and his greatest ambition was to be a famous general well-known for his bravery. He was pretty tough, even as a child, but his big-boy act made him pretty popular. He wasn't a jerk all around --sure, he kind of looked down on nerds and such, but it wasn't like he made a point to beat one up every day.
High school --now, those were the days. He was football captain, with all-star coaches at his heels and scholarship offers at every turn. He had all the girls he wanted. Something was missing, though he'd never admit it to himself-- his dad's absence was a damper on Manuel's life. He couldn't wait until his father came home to see his son's success, and maybe for the first time he would tell Manuel he was proud of him.
Suddenly the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing struck into Manuel's life, killing his father before he came home. Manuel fell into a depression, getting into fighting, smoking, and drinking. Some people, including a few college football coaches, were a little frightened by his sudden change of demeanor and began withdrawing from him. Less than a year later, Manuel seemed to abruptly disappear --everyone scratched their heads as he turned down hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and ran off to join the army --something usually only the poor did when they had no choice.
Of course, he got his girfriend pregnant before he left, but he was too distracted by his father's death to really think of supporting a family --he planned to marry his girlfriend once he "blew off the face of the earth the instigators of his father's death."
He was in the army for about eleven years, until before Isabelle was born. (This may have been why she became the Daddy's girl, because he was always there for her whereas he was always off fighting when her siblings grew up.)
He was kicked out of the army (technically a disability leave, but that's what he calls it) when a head injury caused in action gave him a severe concussion that eventually led to epilepsy. His attacks are few and mild, but he was still in no shape to be in the army. He tried becoming a cop, but no one would accept him. Finally he resorted to swimming, as it seemed to be the only time he could stop thinking about his failure.
present Manuel is now a swim coach, which he rules almost like a kingdom. Well, some of his pupils call it a 'tyranny,' but he says it's a dicatorship. He still sort of thinks of his life as a failure, but at least the swimming gig takes away most of his pain. Life is okay, considering his favorite wife is...well, dead. His room is lined with swimming trophies and medals and medals of honor...told you he was vain.
Suddenly, life isn't so peachy. He sees so much...potential in his youngest daughter when it comes to swimming. Yet all of a sudden, she becomes rebellious. He doesn't understand it. She used to love the water. She had more talent than all of her siblings combined, and here she was, throwing it away. He keeps telling her what a great swimming star will be, but she ignores him, going so far as wanting to quit. Quit? He doesn't understand. How can she hate something that has been, literally, her life for twelve years?
He tries telling her that swimming has been her life since forever, but the words don't come out right, and besides, she doesn't care, anyway. She purposefully slacks off at practices and competitions, even one time swimming at a casual pace in one of the most competitive swimming meets she had ever gone to, reaching second-to-last place.
Things were tense that night.
He supposes it's because it was Nelle that got him into swimming in the first place, and that Isabelle is just the spitting image of her late mother...

...literature*
book title The Little Mermaid
backstory He is the father of Ariel, the main character of the story. The actual Hans Christian Anderson story doesn't mention him much. It really only refers to him as the "Sea King." KING. So, he's pretty powerful. He gets depressed when Ariel leaves the sea to become human. He seems to like Ariel the most, so he's really protective of her. Which is why he gets kind of angry when she leaves the sea...
