personality He believes firmly in the saying, "be the change you wish to see in the world". He volunteers at the Make A Wish foundation, visits the hospital weekly, and always does whatever he can in a crises. When asked why he does these things or how he manages to, he responds with this counter question: "What would you want to happen if it were your brother in that situation? Your mother? If you were in that situation?". He will also go up to people he feels need help, whether they look injured, ostracized, or similarly 'in trouble'.
Will is also a very pensive person. He's quiet and reflective, sometimes preferring not to talk at all rather than blather away without meaning. The beauty of nature is not lost on him, and he loves to enjoy the blue of the sky, the chirp of the birds, the hum of cicadas and the fresh coolness of rain.
Due to the serious way in which he perceives the world, Will often doesn't pick up on sarcasm, especially if it is out of the blue, and occasionally doesn't realize when people are just joking around with him. Once he does, however, Will has a pretty good sense of humor, although he will push the point of the difference between a harmless, funny prank and a cruel trick.
past
Will grew up in Big Sky, Montana. For many years he went to school with the children (and later, teenagers) of this town of about 2200 peep while his parents commuted the fifty miles to Yellowstone. On holidays, the population increased by about 600 people because Big Sky was a bit of a tourist town, what with having such amazing skiing, being in the middle of a national forest and so close to Yellowstone.
On the weekends, he and his parents would hike around Yellowstone, gazing into hot springs, watching the tumultuous towers of water erupting from the geysers, and marveling at gigantic buffalo grazing. Will really felt that this helped him connect with the beauty of the natural world around us, and it awakened within him a voracious appetite for learning about the park and all wildlife.
When he was four, his little sister was born. She was nearly his complete opposite: she didn't really like nature that much, considered insects 'icky', and preferred the glow of technology to the shine of the sun. Rather than the pensive person he was, Amalie was fun-loving, always joking around and becoming a total social butterfly. Still, she was a kind humanitarian like him, she just had a different approach to it. Regaling her guests with humor and pastries- pastry making being a natural talent she discovered in herself- Amalie tended to be more boisterous than Will. Sometimes he insists one could search the world wide over and never find better pastries than his sister's. He himself always was a fairly good cook- and artist in general: he could draw, sculpt, and make clothes. Like many things from childhood, very little compares to memories held close to his heart.
In the summer before his sophomore year, Mira moved to Big Sky. Being such a small town, people in Big Sky formed relationship complexes, and everyone tended to- accidentally, not maliciously- marginalize new people. Mira's mother was a famous botanist who had been invited to work in Yellowstone to study the plants there, and was often gone long hours, absorbed in her work. Mira was an only child and "didn't have a dad". That was all she let on about her family. By and by, Will befriended her, and six weeks into school, they officially started going out. When winter break rolled around, Will was off hiking, camping, skiing, the works again. One day, he returned home early, and caught Mira cheating on him with somebody he didn't recognize, whom he only later (through discussion of the incident with his sister) realized was probably a tourist. Will had stood there staring at them, his mouth agape, until the kiss ended and Mira saw him. For the rest of winter break, Mira avoided him, and when school started up again, (as if her original betrayal hadn't been enough) she spread it around that Will had cheated on her with several "ditsy tourists", which gained her sympathy popularity. There had not been very much drama in Big Sky for several years, and the high schoolers of the town latched onto it eagerly. Nobody believed Will's side of the story except Amalie and her cluster of friends, who (being in eighth grade) had very little effect on the general high school population.
One by one, his friends all abandoned him, sometimes because they believed Mira, other times due to the gossip and negative feelings towards Will, as well as his bottom-of-the-ladder standing in teenage society. Being ostracized from society encouraged Will to become very close to his sister for the remainder of the school year.
present
Y'know those times when people in a room are all chatting and joking, but when you go in, the people stop in mid-sentence and you just KNOW they were saying bad things about you? Or when the conversation comes to a standstill whenever you put your two cents in? Will did, all throughout the end of his junior year.
When the year finally ended, Will had chosen a boarding school (Baum) to ship himself off to in search of a new reputation not tarnished by a mentally questionable catty girlfriend. His sister is still debating whether or not to go with him or stay behind in Big Sky, and Will is staying at a hotel until the summer ends and he can stay in the dorms. He couldn't get out of that now-horrible place as soon as possible.
