Sharon holds people directly to the way she thinks they should be, stuffing them into little boxes based on their gender, the family they come from, etc. Now, obviously, she doesn't do this with her customers (what a way to scare people off), but she holds her friends to it somewhat, and holds her family to her expectations quite strictly. The person she is harshest on, of course, is herself. For example, she makes certain that her appearance, demeanor, and actions are reflective of an amazing mother, or business owner- at least outwardly.This drives some people away, whilst others appear to allow her to mold them to her person expectation. Her daughters are a perfect example of both.
Sometimes, when things aren't just like she would like them to be, Sharon deludes herself into believing they are how she'd want them to be. For example, she likes thinking that Becky's taste for 'bad boys' is just a ridiculous adolescent phase. Instead of scolding/guilt-tripping Becky during her breakups, Sharon just turns a blind eye to all the crazy revolts Becky campaigns against them.
Sharon also perseveres like nobody else, willing to go at it until she gets what she wants, which makes her a very good business owner. She doesn't tolerate slacking off of employees, and works hard to bring in a good following of customers.

past
Before the birth of her first daughter in 1989, Sharon Rutherford wed Russel Carlson, and had been an extremely prominent actress. She loved being a local star, and enjoyed working in the Wandering Goose, her and Russel's cafe in the center of town.
In 1989, Brooke Marie Carlson was born to Russel and Sharon Carlson. Brooke was a huge disappointment- she wouldn't do anything a young girl should do: she didn't sing, didn't dance, didn't act, didn't even wear girl clothes! Russel raised her as though she was a boy; if Brooke had been a boy, perhaps things would have worked out differently. In 1992, Rebecca Sandra Carlson was born. She turned out to be a musical PRODIGY. She loved it! And she loved girly clothes too! She even let Sharon give her a cutesy nickname, Becky, which she kept to present day. As much as Sharon would like to deny it, Sharon then neglected Brooke, leaving Russel to raise her. Becky was backed up by her mother, and managed to gain both the lead role of Audrey in The Little Shop of Horrors and the place of first chair flutist. Sharon could not have been more proud.

Then the move came. Both daughters pitched massive fits, and Sharon was no longer able to quietly ignore Brooke. Brooke screamed, throwing a tantrum Sharon had never seen the likes of before or after, then disappeared. When she came back, the household was silent, seemingly holding its breath before the inevitable happened. They didn't speak to each other at dinnertime. Nobody asked Brooke where she had gone. Those were the worst weeks the family ever experience, and, for a while, Sharon thought the whole family with all their dreams would crumble and fall apart. In the end, though, only Brooke fell away from the family. Sharon and Russell lost their intense closeness over the loss of their first-born, and basically went their separate ways (although they did NOT see other people).

present The Wandering Goose in New York is really taking off, which Sharon is overjoyed about. It has a massive following of customers, and is almost never empty (sometimes it closes, after all). Becky and her friends often frequent the place, and she and Becky enjoy their closeness once again.

Sharon goes to all Becky's concerts and performances. She is proud that Becky became head of the band. When she managed to pull in the highest funding for the band, Sharon was so proud that Becky had inherited her dogged determinedness and would dig her heels in to the bitter end.
