personality There's a few facets to Benji's personality. First and foremost, he's a very caring person despite what first impressions may imply. He's got a big heart and loves a good time with friends. Benji's accepting and understanding, and is willing to give anyone a second chance. Or third or fifth or whatever. He's willing to see the best in people, because he wants them to see the best in him.
But he's also some trouble. Benji's got a hard core hatred of authority, and thinks most people in positions of power are probably corrupt. As such, he doesn't take crap from teachers, cops, adults, whoever. If he thinks they're being stupid or unfair, he's gonna speak up. He reacts the same way with uppity peers, even if they're not necessarily "powerful." This gets him a lot of enemies, but he feels satiated in the end.
Benji's pretty adventurous, and loves to go out and just do something. He'll stay in if he has to, but the majority of the time he likes to be out and about. School work is kind of an issue with him--he does it, sure, but it's not high on his list of priorities. It's just sort of a bummer.
Most of all, though, Benji's a musician, and that is a personality unto itself. He can be very laid back and chill like those acoustic guitar-strumming fellows, or full of adrenaline like those moshers. And he loves everything about music. The precision of a symphonic score, the improvisation of jazz. Benji plays a lot of instruments well, prominently guitar, and sings. His music is his personality.
past Let's state the obvious: Benji's an orphan. His parents died like the SECOND after he was born--car crash on the way home after his mother gave birth to him. I'll be damned as to how Benji survived, but he did. And as no family members stepped up to claim him, Benji was put into foster care about six months after his birthday.
His first family was okay he supposed, looking back. They had a bunch of kids and were "Willing to extend the Wilson family tree!" The Wilson Dad would always say with that stupid grin he wore. But they had too many kids. Like, eight. And Benji was the middle age of them, and was ignored a whole lot. That never sat well with the attention-starved six-year old (by this time), so he lashed out. At everyone. Teachers, his fosters, the social workers. He would not be consoled, and the Wilsons were forced to give him up. They couldn't handle him.
The next two families were eerily similar to the Wilson story. Family four was abusive, family five was negligent, family six was an ultra-conservative, holy-rolling pack of Nazis that the then fourteen year old Benji just couldn't deal with. He had scars he had to deal with, like the revelation of his parent's death and the way none of his family cared to claim him, his past families, his poor school record. Family six was soon replaced by family seven, who gave him back to the agency after Benji committed his first crime. Crimes.
After that, Benji was the state's problem. No family in their right mind wanted to adopt a teenager on probation. His permanent record was not the cleanest, and his general attitude was pissed off and angry with everyone. Anyone. The only escape he had was his music.
Over the years, the only thing Benji was dedicated to was his music. He picked up every instrument he could get his hands on and learned to play it for all he was worth. And he was good, too. Guitar was his favorite by far, but it wasn't just playing that enthralled him. He loved to write it, and sing it, and numerous times in his young, troubled life, he'd started garage band after garage band. As a result, he got pretty good at making friends and he found a better part of him that he was learning to like better than his bitter, angsty orphan self. Also, all that sheet music and composing made him pretty good at math.
But California was old news by now. Benji decided he needed to rid himself of the memories of his past, make a clean break. He wanted a better life from himself, and the minute he turned 18, he acted on it. He traveled across country at the agency's expense and arrived in New York City with hardly more than garbage bag of clothes and the guitar on his back. Knowing that he had to finish his high school education if he wanted to go to college (and he did), he was enrolled in the private high school Baum Academy, where we find him today.
present Benji's managed to really turn himself around now that he's in New York. He tries not to think about his past too much, or what a trouble he'd been to all those families (or vice versa). He still regrets not knowing his parents, but knows that all those negative feelings are going to hold him back.
Benji strives to be as good a person as he can now, though he's still got a problem with dominating authority. His petty crimes are a distant memory, and he even thinks he's healed enough and has changed enough to consider starting to date. He hadn't ever dated before because he always figured he was too messed up, or people would see him as a waste of their time. In fact, in the few months he's been here, Benji's eye has already been caught by one girl in particular, though he's not really sure as to how to go about impressing her.
He's gaining friends and getting decent grades, he still plays his music, and, overall, he's managed to get his life out of the gutter and back on track. He's actually pretty excited for the future.

other notes I focused on the Disney version of Aladdin because I don't know Arabian Nights. Also, I like the riff-raff Aladdin and used that personality more than the precious Prince Ali (lol) one.
...literature*
book title Arabian Nights/Aladdin
backstory I've never actually read Arabian Nights, and I'm sure you're all more familiar with the peppy Disney take on the stories, so I'm just gonna summarize that instead. In the movie, Aladdin is a poor orphan waif who dreams of a better life for himself. Through Jafar's manipulations, he comes across a magic lamp where the genie inside grants him three wishes. He wishes to be a prince via marriage to Princess Jasmine, who ain't gonna have none-a his poser shit. Eventually they fall in love, thwart the evil Jafar, set the genie free yada yada. Live happily ever after, thank you Walt Disney.
