personality
Tate is a free spirit, and a strong believer in live in let live. She is not the strongest, nor the smartest, nor the prettiest. But she is blessed with an unquestionable amount of optimism, patience, and and kindness. She is a strong believer in karma, being a practitioner of Buddhism. Tate is a calm and centered being, able to dole out good advice, because of her ability to look at things impartially.
Tate is a fun and loving persons who is always cheerful and energetic. She can be quite clever, but generally does it in a quiet fashion. Sociable and diplomatic as she may appear, Tate can be deceptive sometimes - she hide her opinions of others beneath her friendliness. But she doesn't hide her emotion. You can probably tell how Tate is feeling from miles away. Unless it is an omission, Tate finds it near impossible to lie.
past
Tate had a pretty uninteresting childhood. She was the only daughter of a grocery store manager and a secretary, went to school, had some friends, had some enemies. Nothing really out of the ordinary. In her Sophomore year she started dating Landon Gleeson, and life remained boring up until her Junior year. Tatum, at the age of sixteen, became pregnant. Landon skirted his responsibilities, and Tatum didn't press the issue. If he didn't want to be involved, than it was for her babies own good that it be raised away from such a negative environment.
Her Mother put Tate under her thumb, making sure the young Mother carried out her maternal obligations. It was exhausting, and Tatum it matured the young girl before her years, causing Tate to take on a certain graveness. It was after Dusty was born that Tate started to get into Buddhism, and the belief that what you gave out, came back too you. Her graveness lifted gradually, and she felt her spirit return to her completely by the time Dusty was two, and thus came the arrival of Orin.
present
In need of some direction, Tatum decided to move to New York with her four year old son. She has a great deal on her plate: She works two jobs: One as a part time Yoga instructor at the Dance Studio, the other as a waitress at a diner, as well as going to school (she's majoring in Philosophy at the moment), and taking care of her son by herself. On top of all this, Orin is quite determined to find Glinda, Dorothy, and someone named Princess Ozma. So, there's that.
Tate tries to take it all in stride, but finds herself multitasking and staying wired on coffee in order to get it all done.

...literature*
book title The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and a few of the sequels.
backstory Orin is the Good Witch from the North, and the weakest of the four witches of Oz. She lacks The East Witches cruel nature, the North Witches political drive, and the West Witches insanity. But she is content, none-the-less, and has a great love for the Munchkin people. She is the first to welcome Dorothy to Oz, and appears to be an old woman. However, in sequels, it is revealed that Tattypoo is in reality the transformation of a beautiful Munchkin queen named Orin. Orin had originally been kidnapped by the former Wicked Witch of the North, Mombi, who was in love with her husband, King Cheeriobed of the Ozure Isles. In order to remove her rival, Mombi kidnapped Orin soon after the birth of her son, Prince Philador. She then transformed Orin into an old witch in order to keep her hidden. Eventually, as Tattypoo, Orin was able to displace Mombi as the ruler of the Gillikins.
At the beginning of the book, Cheeriobed rules over the Ozure Isles from the Sapphire City. Tattypoo resumes her former identity after falling through a "Witch Window" in her home. After her return to human form, Orin loses the magical powers she acquired as the Good Witch of the North. Much of the rest of the novel is devoted to Cheeriobed's rather despondent life since the loss of his beloved wife, and Orin's return to her husband and son.
At the end of the book, Princess Ozma proclaims Up Town the capital of the Gillikin Country, and its rulers, Jo King and Queen Hyacinth, as the new rulers of the Gillikin Country. This is because Queen Orin, in addition to no longer being a witch, no longer wishes to rule. Rather, she wishes to return to her life as Queen of the Ozure Isles.
