SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT [Spencer]

Petal loved Hip-hop class. She usually didn’t teach it but the poor instructor had come down with a cold and could barely stand on his own two feet much less dance. Petal greatfully accepted the responsibility of the class for that week and was having the time of her life. Everybody in the class had such talent. She decided that they’d done such a great job that she’d give them ten minutees of freestyle at the end of class. But first, they had to show her their routines. She’d given them twenty minutes to come up with a routine to Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”. It had to be three eight counts and nothing that was too dance team. She wanted street. For real.

“Okay! Everybody stop. Time’s up!” she said turning off the music. The groups stopped dancing and Petal scanned them to see which one to pick first. Her eyes settled on Spencer. He was really talented and had a substantuial amount of confidence. She was sure he was new. She hadn’;t seen him roaming the halls like she saw the other kids. Nonetheless, She had felt a connection with the guy as soon as he came in the door. Ew, not like that. A spiritual connection of some sort. At first it’s like she recognized him but then Petal realized it was something deeper. Her mom told her to never waste connections like this. So she wouldn’t.

“Spencer’s group. You’re up first.” Petal started the song up again and sat down to watch.

Spence had a hidden obsession. Dance, specifically Hip-Hop and a bit of Break Dancing. Living with his parents, he had to take private lessons from the dance studio about three towns over, more or less fifty miles away from his home. However, being in New York allowed him to freely enjoy his passion without so much of a second glance from the females in his dance class. In the studio, Spence was a completely different person because it relaxed him and allowed him to just flow to the music. Today, Petal had taken over Mrs. Holland's spot as the instructor, which wasn't too bad excepted she made them do a routine to Ke$ha's Tik Tok.

He relied heavily on his group and rarely did they ever disappoint him, so their routine was done and quickly picked up in under fifteen minutes. The extra five gave them time to stretch and limber up. Petal went on to pick a group and when her eyes found his, he knew that his group was up, meh no big. Smirking when she called his name, his group lined up (him leading the pack) when Petal flicked the music to start again. Their routine was precise and clean from what he could see in the mirror. The other members of the class clapped as they went to go sit back down against the mirrored wall.

Spence's gaze fell back on Petal, as he gave her a wink before turning his attention to the next group.

Petal watched in awe as the group performed their routine. This was amazing! Sarah Holland definitely taught them right. She noticed Spencer in the lead and he definitely held the group together. The dance was clean and tight. They didn’t even mess up once! If the rest of the class’s dances were like this she’d have to call ABDC! Petal clapped as the ended their dance and went to go restart the music. “Very good! Thank you guys. How about Veronica’s group up next?” She restarted the music and happily took her spot on the floor. As they began to count she looked over and saw Spencer. Did he just…wink at her? Petal’s smile faltered and she turned her head to the new group. Their routine was just as amazing but Petal was preoccupied with being slightly creeped out. He was probably just being friendly but it didn’t seem like it. He was her age but… she was his teacher and… no she’d just ignore it.

The group routines ended and Petal jumped up excitedly. “Time for… FREESTYLE. You guys get ten minutes for being so awesome,” she annouced, her smile returning. Petal found the playlist on her laptop with the most recent dance songs and press play. She turned down the lights and started dancing. Soon the others followed her. Some had partners but Petal was sure to dance on her own and on the opposite side of the room from Spencer.

Petal was a pretty good dancer in all categories but she thought hip-hop was the best for its freedom. There weren’t any strict rules. You just went with the music and let the beat take you. She also loved a good dance off. Sarah always said they happened in this class during freestyle. Petal would wondered if anybody would challenge her.

Spence watched the group performance, but his focus was on Ambrosia. She was living with Veronica or something because she was an exchange student from Greece who could really pop it while dancing. He had made it a goal to at least get a kiss from the girl before Veronica could cock-block him anymore. After the routine, he stood up, pulled a giggling Ambrosia to the side, and began his magic. He simply whispered something along the lines of being the best dancer and completely gorgeous. Those must have been the magic words, because she was now pulling him into the hallway and her mouth was against his.

The hooking up was okay, but she made it too easy for him. He sort of shoved her off him and she whimpered in confusion and mumbled something along the lines of not liking. He said it was great, but this wasn't the appropriate place. With her head hung in sadness she walked back into the room leaving Spence alone in the hallway. Alone... Like usual. Spence slid down the wall and plopped on the floor as he closed his eyes and rubbed his temples. "Stupid... Chancing girls away... Dumbass." He cussed at himself a bit.

Petal was sweating she was dancing so much. She took a quick break and grabbed her water bottle. Everyone seemed to be having about as much fun as she was. The music definitely moved this crowd. Right when she decided to jump back in the door to the studio came open. In walked Ambrosia.

“Hey, Ambrosia,” Petal called over the music. The girl snapped her head over in Petal’s direction. “You can’t leave without asking first. Okay?”

“Yeah,” the girl nodded looking like she was about to kick something and cry at the same time. The negative energy bugged Petal enough for her to realize she was missing a student. She did another headcount and still found one missing. Maybe they were still out where Ambrosia went. It wasn’t like her students to run off but it did happen every once in awhile. It didn’t take long for Petal to figure out who. Spencer. He probably was taking a call or something. She felt a little bit uncomfortable going looking for him by herself but brushed it off.

“Hey Mike. Watch the class. I gotta make a call,” Petal said trying not to stir anything up.

“Sure thing Petal!”

She made her way out of the studio and found him in the hallway. He looked pretty beat up about something. It really was none of her business but Petal felt like she needed to reach out to him. She sat down next to him and said, “Hey Spence. You not feeling the freestyle today?” She kept her voice conversational and not motherly. She just wanted to talk to him for some reason. Plus making sad people feel better was always a fun thing to do!

Spence was now on the verge of breaking down in the hallway when Petal came looking for him. Fan-fucking-Tastic. Spence was about to break down in front a girl... Girls didn't like emotional trainwrecks when it came to men, cause it possibly meant extra baggage. No one likes extra baggage. Spence put no his best smile and looked up at Petal. "Nah. Family Problems." Spence sort of shrugged a bit, and rubbed his face with hands.

Spence stood up and leaned on the wall and watched Petal. "You know, can I ask you something?" He wasn't sure why he thought he could ask this question, but hell, risks are meant to happen. Spence took a cautious step towards Petal, his eyes locked onto her's. He wasn't sure how Petal would react so he waited, until she answered him to ask his question. Gauging her annoyance and aggitation level, before asking her this question.

"Nah. Family Problems."

“Oh, okay,” Petal said. “Well, I bet you could come back inside and dance it out. It definitely helps me when I’m stressed.” She’d never had family problems really. Her mom and dad were best friends and always worked things out before it got too big. She couldn’t really help him figure out how to fix it but hopefully she could cheer him up while he was here.

Petal was slightly taken off guard when he stood up. She looked up at him and tilted her head. The song suddenly changed to one of Petal’s favorites and she was slightly distracted until he spoke.

"You know, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.” She continued to be confused when he took a step towards her. She looked up at him and smiled warmly. He was staring her right in the eye. She wasn’t sure how she felt about that. It wasn’t exactly making her uncomfortable. She had a slight urge to burst out laughing but instead kept talking. “I’ll try my best to answer it.”

“Oh, okay. Well, I bet you could come back inside and dance it out. It definitely helps me when I’m stressed.”

Spence was half lying about the family problems. Him having the need urge to get with girls to distract himself from the burning want desire to get with the same gender was a big family problem. He could see his father and mother now if he confessed his thoughts with them. They'd murder him, or exile him, like they had caused Scottie to do. His life was in shambles, yet not really. He felt his life was falling apart, yet it was only in his mind. Spence shook his head to answer Petal's question.

His eyes were locked on Petal's his face totally serious, but then it cracked into a smile. His signature smile forming on his lips before he spoke, "Be my partner." Spence eyes were soft as he looked into Petal's, "I know it wasn't a question, but I figured I'd make you fell obligated to listen." Spence laughed a bit as he took a step closer to Petal, eyes squinting a bit, and his teeth biting his lower lips softly.

Petal stepped back and thought about Spencer’s ‘question’. He surely meant dance partner right? The look he was giving her made her stomach churn. What was he getting at? Maybe if she clarified it for him he’d quit looking at her like that. It was creeping her out a little bit.

“I could use a dance partner! My last one went off to be on Broadway. Maybe you’ll be just as lucky,” Petal said. She really felt like she was a good luck charm at times. Still he kept getting closer. Maybe that wasn’t the right thing to say. What should she say? She searched her mind for what to do. Her heart was racing and her stomach continued to churn. His laugh seemed only to make it worse.

“You look like you have a lot on your mind though. Maybe you should go home early. I’ll talk to you when I get an idea on what we could do,” Petal said quickly. Her smile faltered and she bounced on her toes. After a few seconds she walked back to the classroom.
