personality Xerxes, by nature, is charismatic, social, and funny. He has a very wide circle of friends, and to any outside observer appears happy and content with his life. He gets decent grades, is a decent athlete, and is generally liked by everyone.
But there is a darker side to Xerxes’ life. As a child Xerxes often found that his vocal chords had become paralyzed, and though his brain could formulate the words perfectly, it had somehow lost dominion of his tongue. These spells of muteness came at completely arbitrary times, and Xerxes has been humiliated dozens of times by loss of his voice at a crucial moment. From these traumatizing experiences, Xerxes has developed an irrational phobia of public speaking that not even the most reputable doctors psychologists have ever been able to completely eradicate. It wasn’t until Xerxes was fourteen years old and well into his first year of high school that he was diagnosed with a severe case of Selective Mutism, which is easily treatable in young children, but if left undiagnosed for too long becomes untreatable.
Though he deals with the frequent bouts of mutism as best he can, Xerxes’ condition has taken a toll on his personality, causing him to become less social and more introverted with each passing year. His social difficulties and private frustration lead him to seek out more independent activities, which is how Xerxes found skiing. The one activity that at no point requires any verbal communication, Xerxes turns to his skis after bad days. Feeling the wind in his face and the clean incisions his edges slice into the snow make all of his problems disappear.
past Xerxes was born on April 30th, 1993, in Casco Bay, Maine. Being fairly bright, he learned to talk at about nine months. The muteness began when he was about four, about two weeks into day care. Though inside he was frustrated and embarrassed, on the outside he developed a gregarious, uncaring persona that attracted people to him. Xerxes grew up with an abundance of friends.
Xerxes’ parents are history buffs, and Xerxes was named after Xerxes the Great of Persia. Xerxes was raised in an academically inclined environment, and though he isn’t studios per se, he has developed an appreciation for the figureheads of the past. Despite years of spelling, pronouncing, and explaining his name to others, he’s grown up enjoying and being proud of his unique name.
present Xerxes, though sometimes made fun of for his effeminate style, is one of the jocks of Baum Academy, and is one of the most popular males in the student population. He’s attractive among girls as well, and has had a number of girlfriends, though he is disgusted by “players” and tries to devote as much attention and adoration to his current partner as he receives from her. His own condition has made him extra-sensitive to the needs and feelings of others: he tries to give everyone he meets a fair chance.
He always carries around a whiteboard, or other writing implements so that he can communicate when he is under one of his “spells” as he calls them. He also carries a small spiral notebook in his back pocket. This is his equivalent of a diary: he documents every event of his life on the pages, and uses it as an outlet to vent his thoughts and feelings when his voice abandons him.
family He has two loving, middle-class parents, and three siblings. One is his identical twin brother, Darius. Though the two differ in clothing preference(Darius finds Xerxes’ style revolting), they consider themselves one person. Xerxes loves the companionship of his brother because verbal communication is not a factor of their relationship: the two can communicate with their minds, experience each other’s pain and sense each other’s every thought. Being away from his brother for so long is psychologically traumatizing for Xerxes, but the circle of friends and high social status he has developed at Baum Academy as well as frequent solitary ski trips have helped to take his mind off it. He also has two sisters named Amestris and Atossa.
