personality
Tommy has always been oblivious. That’s probably the most noticeable feature about him: for as long as anyone can remember, nobody has described Tomas Torres as anything but excited, prancing around schools and other locations with a happy-go-lucky attitude and without a care in the world. Tommy has never seen the point of being sad or scared or harboring any negative emotions whatsoever. Why would you waste your time being sad, when there are so many happy things in the world? Tommy takes pleasure from anything, from the birds in the air to the bees underground. He latches on to every person he meets, seeing the best qualities in them no matter what others say. He manages to find the bright side of any and every situation, displaying a quality of optimism that almost borders on ignorance.
Tommy has a very close relationship with his dog, Sparky. Tommy and Sparky have had more adventures together than Tommy would ever have the patience to count. Tommy has always been a bit of a coward, particularly when it comes to new places, new people, and generally the unknown, but he knows that with Sparky around, nothing will happen to him. After all, Sparky has a loud bark and big teeth and sharp claws and Tommy has none of those things, but Tommy has Sparky. Sparky is never far from his side, through school, homework, family vacations, or shopping errands. If something scary happens to him, he needs to make sure that Sparky is there.
Behind the happiness and dependence, however, lies a twinge of ambition. Tommy has a secret dream, a single goal towards which he will strive through any and all obstacles: he wants to be President of the United States. Tommy really isn’t sure where this dream came from, but he isn’t the type of person to ask questions with answers that he is sure are going to be confusing, boring, and maybe even scary. He’s always been a bit of an outcast in school, with many students being annoyed by his jittery energy and constant happiness. Tommy longs, more than anything, to be cool and popular, and knows that when he is President of the United States, everyone will think he’s coo. They’ll have to, or he’ll run them over with his special Presidential Tow Truck. He’s made all of his plans for the term he’s going to serve: he’s been online and picked out all of the ties he’s going to wear, all the food he’s going to order, and all of the people he’s going to hire as his vice president, cooks, servants, first lady, secretary, janitors, congressmen, and such. Of course, there’s also the matter of running and campaigning. But Tommy doesn’t need to think about that now. It’s much too confusing, and Tommy takes things one step at a time.
past
The Torreses were never a well-to-do family, but they held their own in the midst of the hustling, bustling, business of Boston. Joel Torres was a full-time Grounds Custodian at the New England Zoo, performing upkeep on the various buildings, hauling animal waste, and other such manual labor. Erica, his mother, was a computer technician for a large law firm on the outskirts of the city, and between the two of them, they brought in enough money for a modest apartment above an art gallery and food for the seven of them. Growing up as the middle child of five children with two working parents, Tommy never received large amounts of attention. This suited him just fine: he received Sparky as a tenth birthday present, and from then on decided that his dog was all he needed. Sparky paid more attention to him than his parents ever had.
One of the highlights of Tomas’ year was always the annual trip to New York City on the Amtrak Railroad. Tommy had explored Boston back to front by the time he was seven or eight, and longed to escape the city boundaries at every opportunity. The seven Torreses would rise early in the morning, packing their few belongings into suitcases and walking the four blocks from their apartment to the train station. They’d arrive at Grand Central Station five hours later, and take a quick tour of Times Square and the surrounding shopping areas. Tommy was never allowed to purchase anything, but gazing into the windows at the wonders beyond was enough. Finally came the best part: the visit to Aunt Sydney, Uncle Joseph, and their daughter Mallory. Mallory was four years Tomas’ elder, but this didn’t stop him from adoring her. Mallory was everything Tommy had always longed to be: attractive, popular, cool. Tommy knew that if someone as cool as Mallory liked him, then he would be cool by association, so he always spent as much time around Mallory as possible. If he ever wanted to be President of the United States, this was someone to keep an eye on.
Erica packed her belongings and left when Tommy was thirteen years old. Tommy and his siblings were devastated, but Sparky helped Tommy keep his head. Life progressed as normal, with Joel working more hours than ever before. Vaughn and Luna, the two oldest Torres siblings, took over the family operations, and there wasn’t much change in Tommy’s life. Then came the illness. Joel was struck with an affliction with a long and complicated name that Tommy could neither remember nor pronounce, but he knew it was bad. He also knew that there was going to be a lot of change in the Torres household. For a few months Joel attempted to work full time, support five children, and pay for his treatment, but he admitted very quickly that this was impossible. Until the treatment was over, the children would all have to live elsewhere.
present
The next month after Joel’s decision was a mad scramble to find anybody willing to take in his children. Vaughn, who had always been rather clever, received a full scholarship to Ohio State University, where he would work part-time as a Teaching Assistant to pay for his own apartment. Joel tried desperately to find a party willing to take in the other four children, but none of his close acquaintances were able to shoulder the heavy burden. Luna finally agreed to stay with Miss Link, the Torres’ elderly neighbor, while Stanley and Daniel were taken on by Trisha, one of Joel’s high school sweethearts and on-off dates since Erica’s disappearance. Tommy, it was decided, would stay with Joel’s brother Joseph, his wife Sydney, and their daughter Mallory.
Tommy is thrilled to be able to see Mallory every day, the person he’s idolized and adored for his entire life. But he is also nervous about the new and different setting. What if Mallory gets bored of him? What if she doesn’t think he’s cool anymore? What if Mallory’s friends don’t think he’s cool? What if Uncle Joseph and Aunt Sydney won’t let him take Sparky out for walks every day? And what about high school? Will the kids there think he’s cool? Will it be totally different from eighth grade? Oh God, he hopes it isn’t. He hopes the high school kids will think he’s cool. After all, you can’t be elected President if people don’t think you’re cool.
