personality
[+] reliable ;;
while most people assume she can’t be trusted because of either her selfishness or her daring, this isn’t true. carmen is very reliable and will get what needs to be done done. she may remember at the last moment that she was supposed to do something but this is alright; she works better under pressure. it’s why she procrastinates. growing up with a big family, she knew she had to be trusted. otherwise, she’d get nowhere with them (and she’d get the worst of the chores).
[+] bold ;;carmen isn’t surprised that she’s the host of the mermaid that was so fearless to approach the shore. she is the sort to believe in living life to its fullest. she doesn’t know what is going to happen tomorrow and that’s why she takes the bull by the horns. carmen has been like this for as long as she can remember. it really set in though after the death of a close friend. whitney was perhaps the only person who could have called carmen a best friend. carmen took it hard when she lost the girl.
[-] argumentative ;;
carmen can get very stubborn about her beliefs and ideas; this leads to arguing and disagreements, even over small things like what belongs to her. (her mermaid tells her about arguing with her sisters often over their differing personalities or the personal items they couldn’t figure out as they were all labeled ‘a’). carmen’s had a fair share of being fired up and cooled down; there’s only one way her arguments end and she does her best to make sure it’s calmly but some things really push her buttons.
[-] selfish;;
carmen likes to take things that aren’t hers. she’s not a kleptomaniac, per say, but she’ll borrow without asking. whatever it is she’s taken will be returned before the day’s end, though, or she’ll be tossing and turning all night. she believes that her needs come first; part of this is her selfishness but another believes that you need to worry about yourself before you can about others. when it comes to children, however, carmen does her best to make sure they get what they want first. it’s partially why she works part-time at a daycare.
past
growing up with an older sister, an older brother, and a younger brother was difficult, to say the least. while her older siblings got along splendidly (having only been born two years apart), she didn’t understand them well enough to have a good time. her younger brother was too young (three years isn’t that young but don’t tell carmen that). her sister was somehow timid and girly; her older brother was a big studier; her younger brother was into sports. carmen was in the middle ground, wanting a good education but finding more fun in exploring the woods. she was far from girly and hated when her sister requested that they paint each other’s nails and gossip (though carmen did love when she braided her hair).
mom and dad were hard workers despite living in such a small town. it was a lot of dirt roads and small locally owned stores. carmen loved it. some kids would hate having their mother work at the same school they attended but carmen thought it was brilliant. while it meant not getting away with trouble-making, it did mean getting home easily. older sister was three years above her and older brother two; it was strange for her when they left junior high for high school. while she was sometimes upset about it, carmen found her life at school to be much more… free. she met whitney in seventh grade; they sat next to each other in music and history and grew to be very close friends. this was a first for carmen who didn’t get along very well with most girls in school.
when they entered high school, it wasn’t a very big change. classes were still small and lessons still easy. it wasn’t until their junior year that things took a turn for the worse. carmen’s father lost his job and for awhile, everything seemed wrong. it was strange to see him there when she got home from school; it was strange when they stopped having dessert after dinner. everything felt different. carmen adjusted and she did so in a negative way. she became selfish, feeling she deserved more than her little brother because she was after all older than he was. carmen argued more, refusing to do chores or to go out and get a job.
it wasn’t until the middle of junior year that things got really bad. if only whitney had spent the night, if only carmen had insisted that she stay for one more game of hide and seek. she could’ve avoided the drunk driver and she’d still be here today except that she couldn’t and she wasn’t. after the funeral, carmen threw herself into chores and finding a job and school. it was during this time that her mermaid made an appearance. it was shortly after the awakening that carmen decided it was time she live life as if it were her last day.
graduating a semester early, carmen pointedly said she was leaving during the middle of dinner. the silverware clinking on plates and chatter of older sister’s college plans stopped and she gave them each an even, patient look. mom and dad were not pleased. older sister was not pleased to see that her younger sister was stealing her thunder. to new york, carmen was going, where she could forget about what had happened last year. no amount of protesting from her family could stop her. with the money earned from her job, she packed all of her things and bought a ticket to new york.
carmen took a year off of school, working odd jobs until she had enough for an apartment. for awhile, her mermaid was silent and thoughtful, rarely making an appearance. at some point, she became more active and loud, wondering about her sisters, her father, and her grandmother. where were they? she was sure she could feel them somewhere. carmen barely managed getting into barrie university and she’s quite happy to have a home where she doesn’t have to pay rent.
present
living in the dorms at barrie was difficult, to say the least. while everybody seemed to know each other, whether it be from classes or parties, she was the odd one out from south dakota with a secret past. it didn’t help that she often had to speak aloud to her mermaid in crowded areas where one might ask “excuse me?” to which she’d have to answer “sorry, i was talking to somebody else.” when there was clearly no one for her to talk to.
she’s majoring in elementary education, wanting to be a teacher as her mother had been. it’s a joy and she’s looking forward to working with younger children, mostly as they don’t get on her nerves like teenagers do. carmen is disappointed that her mermaid can’t seem to pinpoint a location on her sisters; though, to be honest, she really doesn’t give a damn and would rather enjoy life than worry about some old sea witch.
