why can't i ♥ b r e a t h e ♥whenever i think about you Kylie didn't mind being the new student as much as other new students minded. Then again, they probably didn't have her confidence. Then again this private school, this wondrous Baum Academy, was making her heart sing. It was cozy and familiar and full of opportunities. There were so many classes that she wanted to take during the next three years. For example: Tech Theatre. Behind the scenes drama? It was quite possibly the best idea anybody had ever had. It was acting without being on stage... Okay, not really. With a little bounce in her step, Kylie continued down the hall of the Drama building, absolutely loving that the subject had its own place. How awkward would it be if students performing Brave New World had to work next to a science classroom with explosions of mistakenly mixed chemicals? It made her shudder.
Nudging the door open with her hip (thank goodness it was already partially open, her hands were too full to use the handle), Kylie stepped into the classroom. She loved it right away. It wasn't your normal classroom, of course. It was where the drama students put on the plays which meant it had a stage and the seats arranged in a way that worked for the audience. Kylie stood around a little awkwardly for a moment, long enough for two more students to enter the room behind her, wondering what to do. She couldn't find a teacher from her viewpoint; just students and backdrops and the occasional prop. Shifting on her feet, Kylie struggled to keep all of her papers and books in order. It was a shame she didn't have a backpack, nor the time to stop at her locker. She hadn't expected to receive all of her textbooks on her first day. Of course, Kylie figured she'd be able to carry her notebooks around easily. She hadn't planned to add three textbooks, both with more pages than she cared to ever read. She should've listened to her grandparents.
Standing off more to the side, trying to get out of the way of anybody entering the room, Kylie smiled at a passing student. "Oh dear," she murmured to herself, just as a strand of hair fell into her eyes. Ahh, great. What was she supposed to do now? tag: austin~words: three eight threenotes: lyrics: why can't i? - liz phaircredit: NOA

Austin always came to class early, when he did manage to go to class. Actual classes were usually a waste of time, but the short periods before and after class were golden. They were always full of a bunch of kids sitting around, just wishing that class would begin already…and Austin liked to play a game he called 'Let's make someone wish that class would never start.' He would always start by picking someone he didn't know, which had been becoming quite difficult as he progressed through the years, and start up a conversation with them. It didn't matter what the subject was, as long as he got them to stop thinking so much about the stupid class and start focusing their attention on more important things like, well…him. He gave himself extra points if the person he was talking to was a cute girl. Not that he minded talking to boys, it was just more fun with girls. They tended to get all goggly-eyed and smiley…he thrived on that. Although recently, more and more girls had been starting to hear of his not-so-normal tendencies, and didn't want to have anything to do with him. This had happened recently with a girl in his old Life Skills elective, and pretty soon everyone in the class was looking like him like he was from the planet Mars.
So that was the end of that class, and Austin transferred to Tech Theatre in the spring. The class was pretty good so far, there was a cute little brunette freshman he'd been talking too, named Kelly something. She was a bit short for his taste, but she was funny and had a cute laugh so he enjoyed talking to her. In fact, he planned to ask her out today. He'd learned that asking a girl out the first time you meet her never went so well, so now he waited at least five meetings before asking a girl out. He'd taken his time with this one, just because she was so young and he didn't want to corrupt her…or at least he didn't want to corrupt her too quickly.
Austin waved hello to the people he knew on the way to the drama building, and avoided the gaze of equally as many people. After barely avoiding what could have been a very awkward encounter, he finally made it to the Tech Theatre room. He pulled his backpack up as he entered the room, looking around for cute Kelly. And there she was, waving ferociously in the corner. He was about to saunter over to her when he heard someone mumble something next to him. He turned his head slightly to glance at them, expecting another one of his past flings to give him a dirty look.
Holy mother of god.
It was definitely not one of his past flings, oh no, it was infinitely better than that. It was a girl. But not just any girl, the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. Sure, he'd dated some models, but this girl was pretty in a different way. While they were usually caked in makeup and usually on some sort of drug, this girl was naturally gorgeous. It looked like she had just stepped out of a story book, or like she had fallen down from heaven, never having been touched. Oh god, he was thinking in cliches again. But this girl deserved the cliches. And she was obviously confused, so she must be new to the class. In fact, she must be new to the school, there's no way he would have passed by a girl like this and not have looked twice. That would explain the giant stack of books she was carrying, she must have forgotten her bag somewhere. She looked like she was drowning in them, the poor girl. All he wanted to do was just take her books and throw them across the room and take her to Central Park and buy her roses and win her love. As he was about to do just that, rational Austin chimed in his head…that would be ridiculously creepy. Well, the last thing he wanted to do was scare this girl away. Girl wasn't even the right word for her…it was too…common. And she was anything but common.
Okay. He could do this. All he had to do was be his regular, charming old self. She couldn't be that much different than other girls, could she? He could win her over. Shit, cute Kelly was still waving and was now giving him a weird look. Probably because he had been blatantly staring at this girl for a good five minutes…not that he cared at this point. Kelly couldn't hold a candle to this girl, as cute as she was. So for now she would be ignored. Now back to the angel girl…he'd have to start off with something normal, and not creepy. For some reason that was becoming increasingly difficult the more he looked at her…dammit.
"Need any help with that?" Austin said jokingly, flashing a smile. There, he said something normal…this was going to be fine.

why can't i ♥ b r e a t h e ♥whenever i think about you Oh… was that small brunette girl waving at her? Well, this was certainly awkward. Kylie had no idea who she was; she’d definitely never seen her before. Then again, it was her first day of school and she really hadn’t seen anybody before. At least the students in her first class were nice. That was certainly not how it had worked at public school. They were mean and condescending. “Oh, a new girl? Great. So excited. Whine complain whine.” Except of course she didn’t really think that. No, Kylie was much too kind to feel that way about anybody. Still, they hadn’t been nice. This brunette girl seemed friendly enough, if not a little strange and confusing. Until Kylie realized that she wasn’t waving at her (thank goodness; she would’ve felt bad since she couldn’t really wave back anyhow, what with holding onto her books). No, she was waving at somebody in the same general direction. Kylie turned to look around and was startled to see a boy standing next to her. And he was… uh, looking at her. Kylie realized eventually just how familiar he was and she would’ve flat out asked “do I know you?” if it weren’t for his distracting features.
Kylie enjoyed romance and fairytales and happy endings, but she’d never considered a relationship of her own. Perhaps it was that she was too focused on everything else; school and her music and her grandparents. They were getting old, after all, and they sometimes needed taking care of. This boy, though… well, he was just so very striking. Perhaps it was that he was taller than her, which mostly everybody was, but he made her feel safe with his stature which was strange. Maybe it was that he was familiar. Or it could’ve been his eyes… captivating and not nearly as boring as brown eyes usually were. No, his were pretty. … Could eyes be pretty on a guy? Maybe not. Oh well. Kylie smiled at him, hoping the situation hadn’t become awkward with the two of them just staring at each other. She glanced back to the brunette girl; she’d stopped waving so fiercely. Yes, the girl had definitely been waving to this boy. Who was he, anyway? Of course she wouldn’t know him, but how else would he be familiar? It wasn’t often that she found people to be recognizable.
He spoke then and even that was taking her down memory lane. Kylie tilted her head curiously, wondering who he was. Once she’d processed what he said, Kylie glanced to her books and laughed a little. “Oh! If you don’t mind, I would appreciate it.” She answered, trying to offer a textbook or two. “I had no idea they’d give me my books today and I didn’t think I would…” Kylie paused abruptly, glancing back up to him. “I’m sorry!” she exclaimed, “I’m rambling.” A sheepish smile graced her lips. “I’m Kylie.” She held a hand out a little awkwardly, her elbow at a strange angle, still trying to hold her books. It would probably be a good idea to go set these down somewhere, but she didn’t want the teacher to think she was already a part of the class. Didn’t new students need to be added to lists and such? “Thanks… by the way, for…” Kylie gestured as well she could towards the books he’d taken. tag: austin~words: five six fournotes: lyrics: why can't i? - liz phaircredit: NOA

As the girl turned around to address him, Austin got his first look into her eyes. The eyes got to him, they looked…familiar, somehow. He'd seen many blue eyes of course, but her eyes almost made him do a double take. They were stunning…and they conjured a feeling inside of him that he was sure he'd felt before, but couldn't remember when. Who was she? And why were they standing there like idiots staring at each other? Not that he minded, of course. But he was pretty sure they were getting some weird looks from their classmates…especially cute Kelly, who Austin was sure was depressed in the corner but he didn't care enough to look.
"Oh, I can handle more than that," Austin said as he handed her two puny textbooks. Did she really think he was that weak? He thought it was obvious that he lifted weights in his spare time…and by weights he meant hats. But the hats he had ordered recently had some very heavy bells on them, so they should count as weights! One pound weights yes, but still weights. He reached over to grab more textbooks, and ended up taking five of the six of them. Okay, this wasn't so bad, he could handle this. He'd carried a 110 pound girl six blocks before, so he could hold a normal conversation now. Who was he kidding? The heaviness of the textbooks were the least of his worries right now.
However, the girl's rambling did give him some confidence. She was obviously flustered, probably by the new class but Austin liked to think that it was because of him. He laughed a bit as she apologized, and then he heard her name. Kylie…where was that name from? There weren't too many Kylie's around, and he was sure he'd heard it somewhere before…or more likely, he was going insane. That worried him slightly, if he was going insane this early on, he'd be in a mental hospital by next week.
Well, time to crack that signature smile and win her over. "I'm Austin, nice to meet you. I'm assuming you're new here, because there's no way I spent four years here without noticing you." There. That was blunt, but honest. Austin had learned that being blunt was always the best way to test the waters as to whether or not a girl is interested. Though in this case, he felt like he had a lot on the line, and if the line went under, he'd probably pursue her anyways. She was just too good to be true.

why can't i ♥ b r e a t h e ♥whenever i think about you Yes, the more she watched him, the more familiar he was. What was it, though? Brown eyes weren’t uncommon and she knew plenty of people who were taller than her and… and, well… her grandparents were familiar! Right? That counted? Didn’t it? Oh, gosh darn it. If only she could ask if she knew him. That was awkward though, right? You don’t ask a stranger if you know them. That made them… that made them not a stranger which kind of made the whole thing pointless. Okay, so then she officially did not know him. Until he introduced himself, that was. Then she would sort of know him. He took more textbooks than she’d intended for him to take. Kylie followed his hands a bit warily, feeling bad to be letting this boy help her out so much. Especially for having just met her. She pulled her hands back, though, holding her notebooks against her chest. If he said he could handle more, he could handle more. “Well, if you’re sure. I mean… it’s more than I can handle. I swear, I was going to fall over any second.” Kylie laughed a little, truly grateful to have lightened her load. Now she could stretch her arms (if she weren’t so keen on keeping them close to her body) and relax a bit.
Kylie glanced once more to the brunette girl in the corner; she looked none too pleased now. “Do you… uhm, know that girl?” Kylie asked, looking back to the boy. “I think she was waving at you.” Should she have mentioned that in the brief silence between her introducing herself and him doing so as well? She really didn’t want to have the poor girl waiting for him. And then he smiled. Kylie was legitimately speechless at what was such a small notion. Yet, it was a smile she’d seen before. It was also the most astonishing smiles she’d seen a long while. As if his smile hadn’t left her speechless, the next comment surely would have. Normally, compliments like that went right over her head but she was in fairytale mode and… Austin? While it briefly made her think of a certain childhood friend, there was no way it could be him. He’d never gone by Austin. “Nice to meet you too,” she murmured, hoping her cheeks weren’t as red as she knew they were. ‘Austin! Get to your seat.’ Kylie jumped a little, breaking eye contact with the boy to the woman who’d snapped. Oh, so this was their teacher… Well, she seemed friendly, even for the harsh order. Perhaps she didn’t approve of students being tardy.
‘Hello, dear. I don’t recognize you.’ Kylie smiled at the woman, “I’m new. My name’s Kylie.” The teacher gestured to an office nearby. Wow… the drama teacher had a small office instead of a desk. That was neat. ‘To my office, dear. I’m assuming those are your books? Austin, find her a seat, will you?’ Kylie waved at Austin and followed the woman to her office. It was important to pay attention, but… okay, her mind kept drifting back to him and she couldn’t help but to try figuring out who he was. The teacher went on to tell Kylie about policies and expectations for her attendance, schoolwork, and grades. There was also some direction on safety as this was Theatre Tech and it could be dangerous if they didn’t pay enough attention. All very boring stuff, really. tag: austin~words: five seven ninenotes: lyrics: why can't i? - liz phaircredit: NOA

"I believe you, you're tiny. In a good way, of course. I like tiny." Austin wanted to add and your hair and your eyes and your voice and your smile but he knew that would have been a bit over the top. Didn't stop him from thinking it though. A smile crept across his face as he saw her cheeks turn the cutest shade of pink. Every time he though she couldn't get any more perfect, she had to pull some other adorable habit out to make him swoon all over her again. He wanted to stop smiling, but it was as if his jaw automatically moved into the familiar position every time he looked at her.
His thoughts were interrupted as she asked him a question about someone in the class. "What?" Who was she talking about? Austin turned around for a quick second to see how she was looking at. Of course, it was cute Kelly. "Oh, she's just a…friend. Don't worry about it, I'll talk to her later." Why was Kylie thinking about someone besides him right now? Wasn't he being charming enough? Dammit, he had to be more clever now. He had to win her over. If she wanted him to kick Kelly across the room, he'd do it. He'd do anything.
Austin almost jumped five feet in the air when Mrs. Schuhmacher said his name. Jeez, that woman always came out of nowhere. He hated her so much. Out of all his teachers, she was the one who hated him the most. Sure, all his teachers probably didn't like him, but Austin was sure that this one was out to get him for some reason. Not that he cared, of course, grades were the least of his priorities. In his opinion he'd done nothing wrong and Mrs. Schuhmacher just favored the boring quiet girls.
"Mrs. Schuhmacher, I was just introducing this beautiful young lady to our wonderful class, no need to yell," Austin said, giving a playful wink towards Kylie before heading over to his usual seat. As Mrs. Schuhmacher escorted Kylie out of the classroom, Austin couldn't help but notice how great the girl looked in that dress, especially from this new view from behind. He mentally slapped himself, knowing that if Kylie knew the thoughts going around in his hormonal teenage brain she would probably not want anything to do with him. Just as he was trying to put his brain on any other topic but the one he was currently thinking of, he heard a mumble from his right side.
"Ahem."
Oh shit. He forgot that his usual seat was right next to cute Kelly. Well this was going to be awkward considering that he had been blatantly ignoring her for the past five minutes. And times that awkwardness by about 100, because she probably just saw him checking out Kylie's ass two seconds ago. Well, maybe he should just act normal. They could still be friends, right? "Hey Kelly! What's up?"
"What's up? Really, Austin?"
Jeez, what was her problem? They weren't even dating, she had no right to be possessive. Maybe if he just explained the situation she'd understand. "Oh, sorry about before, I was talking to that new girl, she looked lost."
"You didn't seem sorry about it then. In fact, you seemed to be having a pretty good time."
Well, that was true, he was having a good time. Why was she so angry about it? Just because he wasn't talking to her for two seconds didn't mean she had to freak out. "Is me having a good time a problem?"
"You know what, Austin, I ignored all the things everyone said about you and I…"
Blah blah blah. She kept talking, but Austin tuned her out because Kylie had just walked back into the room. God, she was gorgeous.

why can't i ♥ b r e a t h e ♥whenever i think about you “Oh?” Kylie laughed. She wouldn’t have been offended either way; she knew she was tiny and she liked it. It made her feel unique. “Well, thank you.” Never before though had she had somebody tell her they liked tiny. That wasn’t something you heard every day. Kylie wasn’t used to receiving compliments, much less two in five minutes. Maybe he was just really friendly. Yes, that could be it. If that was the case, she liked him already. Friendly people were hard to come by in New York (or maybe she had bad luck). “You’re, uh, tall.” Kylie couldn’t help but to say so. When somebody complimented you, it was usually nice for you to do the same. “I like tall.” A lot. Kylie smiled at him, glad to have gotten over her momentary speechlessness. His smile was just stunning.
Knowing now that it was rude to let herself get so easily distracted while talking to somebody else, Kylie didn’t glance to the girl again in curiosity. If she was just a friend, then she was just that. “I see. She seems… nice.” Not that Kylie had ever met the girl, nor heard about her. What if she was known around school as somebody who was a professional at waving? Kylie laughed a little, to herself mostly, unable to think that that would make for a terrible nickname/way to be known by everybody. She wondered if people had given her a nickname yet, other than ‘new girl.’ Did Austin have a nickname? She’d have to ask around if she wanted to get to know him better. That wasn’t strange, was it? Maybe she would just talk to him…
Kylie couldn’t help but to blush again. Before she could say anything, Mrs. Schumacher (oh, it would take her some time to learn how to say and spell that) was leading her away. Once she was in the office, and surely out of Austin’s hearing range, Kylie couldn’t help but to mutter: “he’s certainly charming.” All Mrs. Schumacher had to say to this was ‘hmph.’ Giving Kylie a packet of class procedures, rules, and grading, Mrs. Schumacher than ushered her out of the office. Even though she’d had to stand in front of three other rooms full of teenagers, she had yet to get used to it. While she was normally very confident, Kylie hardly liked this part of being new.
“Class.” Mrs. Schumacher didn’t even have to raise her voice to get everybody’s attention. She started talking then, Kylie standing beside her a little awkwardly. She saw Austin then, sitting next to the brunette girl. She smiled at him briefly before looking back to the teacher. “This is Kylie Jacobs; she’s new so treat her as you would if you were new.” There was a threatening undertone to this that Kylie couldn’t help but notice. Mrs. Schumacher faced Kylie and, in a lowered voice, said: “since you seem to have hit it off so well with him, why don’t you take a seat next to Austin?” Kylie shrugged as if this didn’t matter to her, but she did appreciate being able to sit next to somebody she sort of knew.

Wow, she was beautiful. The way the light hit her hair and the way she looked so cute and nervous and...
Wait. Did Mrs. Schumacher just say Kylie Jacobs? He had to be mishearing her. There was no way his childhood best friend was here, in this classroom, and had grown up looking like a goddess. But sure enough, his ears were fine, that was definitely what the teacher said. For some reason Austin went with his first reaction: he laughed…loudly. He had no idea why he did it, it was just so ridiculous that little Kylie Jacobs had popped back into his life in such a strange matter. Mrs. Schumacher was apparently not too happy with this, and quickly chimed in with a curt "Do you have a problem, Austin?"
Austin quickly snapped out of his laughing fit and wiped the few tears that had started to stream from his eyes. "No, definitely not, Mrs. Schumacher. I'm totally fine." He attempted to keep a straight face as Kylie headed over…this was just too weird. He knew he shouldn't be laughing, but for some reason that's all he could think of doing right now. He knew it was probably just his weird way of coping with the unfathomable news…but he did wish he could have a normal reaction instead of just looking like an idiot. Okay, he just had to take a couple of deep breaths and think over the positives of the situation. Well first, Kylie was still as gorgeous as she was as a child. Wow, that sounded weird. He shook his head as he tried to get that thought out of his mind. What he meant to think was that she grew up nicely. Plus, his parents liked her. Not that he cared what his parents thought. Actually, he'd probably tell his parents that he just met a random girl and not tell them it was Kylie just to piss them off. And the negatives to the situation were…actually, there really were no negatives to the situation. So what was the big issue? Unless she had ridiculously changed in the past few years, he knew she had a great personality. And did he mention that she was stunningly gorgeous? Gah, this was ridiculous. He couldn't believe that he was in love with his childhood sweetheart once again. Well…he couldn't call it love yet, exactly. Maybe it was extreme infatuation? No, that sounded even worse. Damn it, he was going insane.
Austin burst back into reality and smirked as he saw Kylie giving him a strange look as she sat down in the seat next to him…she obviously had no idea what was going on. Mrs. Schumacher had long gone onto a lecture about the correct tying of ropes or something, but all Austin could think about with the beautiful Miss Kylie Jacobs. She obviously didn't know what was going on, so he decided to screw the rope lesson and give her a gentle reminder. He looked at her and smiled, leaning in close behind her and whispered: "Don't you remember? We've met before."

why can't i ♥ b r e a t h e ♥whenever i think about you
Well, this was certainly the first time had somebody laughed after the teacher introduced her to the class. Kylie couldn’t help but to feel a little embarrassed. Was there something wrong with her name? Or maybe a flyaway strand of hair? To make matters worse, it was Austin who was laughing! That was just dreadfully humiliating. Now she had to go sit next to him. Well, he still had most of her books, anyway. She should’ve grabbed those earlier. Thanking Mrs. Schumacher quietly, Kylie made her way to the seat she was to take, unable but to wonder what was so funny. According to his answer to the teacher, nothing was wrong and he was fine. Kylie took her seat a little uncertainly, shooting Austin a confused smile, before paying attention to Mrs. Schumacher. It would be a good idea to listen as it was her first day and she probably had some catching up to do. Already, there was something about a carrick bend which just went right over her head.
This was why she was quite happy to have a distraction. Schoolwork had never been her forte anyhow. This distraction came from Austin, though, who she couldn’t help but to be a little self-conscious around now. It wasn’t fair because she was hardly ever self-conscious. She tilted her head to hear him better. Kylie found herself more confused than ever. She gave him a sharp look, trying to figure out what he could mean by that. They’d met before? She was quite certain they had not. Kylie was sure she’d remember a smile such as his. The more she thought about it, the more believable options escaped her. He hadn’t been in a previous class, nor to any of her public schools, or from Connecticut. Along with her confusion, there was a strange sense of déjà vu to his words, as if she’d heard them before. Kylie had never met him, though, and she’d never heard such a comment before. “We…” Kylie paused, her eyebrows meeting in confusion. “We have?” Though, the more she looked in his eyes, the more familiar the gleam was…

He still couldn't believe that Kylie Jacobs was sitting right next to him. His now perpetual smile was plastered on his face as he paid attention to Mrs. Schumacher for the two seconds until Kylie responded. She was still talking about ropes…Austin swore she never talked about anything else. Well, that and Mr. Baumgartner…ever since those two started dating he was about the only thing Mrs. Schumacher talked about besides ropes. Those two must have really kinky sex…whoa whoa whoa. Where the hell had that thought come from? Well, that wiped the smile clear off his face.
But not for long, because Kylie gave the cutest confused response ever. The way her eyebrows scrunched together as she spoke and the way her eyes sparkled in the ugly florescent lighting just made him smile all over again. Before he could even think of a response, one came flying out of his mouth. "Well, of course. You said so yourself: Once upo-" Wait. What the fuck was he saying? It was like someone else was controlling the words that just flew out of his mouth. He had no idea what that even meant, she didn't say anything to imply that she knew him before. Jeez, he really was going insane. "Whoa…don't know where all that came from. I mean, you might remember me as…" he took a deep breath before he mumbled the name under his breath so absolutely nobody else could here: "…Gus-Gus." He hoped she heard him, because there was no way he was going to repeat that. Even the thought of being called Gus-Gus around school gave him the chills. It was a nice childhood nickname, but it was not the type of name he'd like to be known as.
He turned back to Mrs. Schumacher for a second as she mentioned how what a great chicken parmesan Mr. Baumgartner made…that woman was out of her mind. However, in the back of his mind, Austin wanted to feel that kind of love: the kind that made you want to tell even people who didn't want to listen about, the kind that made you want to shout it from the top of a mountain. And was it weird that he already wanted to do this with Kylie?

why can't i ♥ b r e a t h e ♥whenever i think about you Kylie would know this boy. Right? Right. She remembered everybody! Kylie even remembered Johanna! Johanna, who hadn’t been her neighbor which would make sense to remember, but a girl who lived two blocks away with the best dollhouse ever back in Connecticut which had been years ago. If she could remember Johanna, she would remember whoever this Austin person was. Had she known an Austin in Connecticut? Actually… now that she was thinking about it… Kylie gave him a confused look. She’d never said so! Whatever he’d been saying was familiar but she couldn’t remember from what… it must’ve been a Disney movie because that was all that was coming to mind. Oh well! That didn’t matter now (it would later; she was now determined to figure it out). “Right then…”
Kylie leaned closer, realizing he was about to tell her but evidently it was something secret because he lowered his voice quite a lot. She almost missed what he’d said for Mrs. Schumacher had loudly started to scold another student at the same moment. “Gus-gus?” Kylie repeated, having absolutely no idea what he was talking about for about a millisecond before she suddenly remembered. Pivoting completely in her seat so she could face him, Kylie gave him a scrutinizing look, trying to find familiar futures. For one, there was no way this could be him because he was still in Connecticut, probably having forgotten all about her by now. Two, this couldn’t be Gus-gus because she would’ve recognized him and since when did he go… by… “Reinhart?” Well… the more she looked him over, the more tiny features she noticed that surely only she would notice. Like, that scar on his collarbone from when they’d been a bit too reckless. There was also the smallest hint in his eyes, how the color got just a bit lighter closer to the iris. Kylie suddenly realized that it had to be him because who else did she know that used to go by Gus-gus? “Ohmygod!” She squealed, as quietly as she could of course, “it is you!”

Did Kylie not remember him? She had to remember him. Well, he shouldn't be saying that, he didn't remember her at first. But still, even though they hadn't talked in years, Kylie had still popped up in his mind every once in a while, usually when he was dating another girl. As weird as that sounded, Austin always found himself comparing the other girls to his innocent romance with the little blonde. What they had was adorable and perfect, and none of his other relationships ever seemed to compare to it. Perhaps that was why he had dated so many girls: he was always looking for that special something that always seemed to be missing. He had never found it, and he had always thought it was because the girls usually ditched him before that feeling could grow. But sitting here with Kylie, he felt it instantly.
Austin smiled as she remembered him. He knew that Gus-Gus would jog her memory, and her enthusiastic response just continued to put a smile on his face. "Little Kylie Jacobs from Weston grew up, what do you know?" He nonchalantly grabbed one of the strips of paper he kept hidden in the back of his notebook just for occasions like this and continued talking. "Remember pretending to be pirates, climbing the giant oak tree in my backyard," He fiddled with the piece of paper underneath his desk, trying to remember how to fold it right all the while looking completely normal. "…and the roses in Murford Park?" There! Perfect. He pulled the paper rose out from under the desk and handed it over to her just as he finished his question. His friends had made fun of him for asking the Japanese exchange student who made origami all of class how to make an origami rose, but he was sure they wouldn't be laughing now. If he impressed her enough, maybe he'd get a kiss after class? It was a reach, but it wasn't like they hadn't kissed before. Sure, they were five, but what did that matter?
He suddenly had a feeling in his stomach that felt somewhat familiar. It was that feeling he got when he first moved to New York, and when he first tried on his favorite red pointy hat…except this was much stronger than those feelings. It was a an almost indescribable feeling, the only way he could explain it to himself was that being with Kylie just felt…right. He just looked into her sparkling baby-blue eyes and realized instantly: he was going to marry this girl. He didn't care about how idiotic that made him sound, as he had just re-met her a few minutes ago, but going back through all the good times that they had and all the mistakes he had made when she was gone he knew that they had all led him right to this moment, right here. This was where he was supposed to be, and this was the girl he was supposed to be with. Nothing else mattered anymore, everything revolved around her.

why can't i ♥ b r e a t h e ♥whenever i think about you The longer Kylie sat here, the more she recognized about him. Actually, she was becoming increasingly fidgety just sitting here when all she wanted to do at this point was go to the nearest park with him and just catch up. She wanted to find out how long he’d been in New York, what he had been up to; Kylie just wanted to spend time with him, make up for the lost years. Unfortunately, they were stuck in Tech Theatre for a good forty minutes at least. Well, she couldn’t complain; classes at the public school had been an hour and a half. Baum’s hour long classes were treating her well; she had yet to fall asleep in any of them! “I still can’t believe it’s you,” she whispered, mostly trying to get over her surprise, no longer caring if she were to accidently interrupt Mrs. Schumacher.
She giggled, tugging on a strand of her hair. “Yeah, I suppose so…” she mumbled, a little embarrassed. Was that a compliment or…? Kylie wasn’t even sure what else it could’ve been. That didn’t matter. What mattered was that, for the first time in awhile, she was actually feeling sort of self-conscious. Kylie was a confident girl, but she could vaguely remember any and all time spent with Austin had been… different. She’d been unaware of it, but she always tried to do a little better than normal around him. Because she’d had this paranoid thought that if she were too boring or not good enough, he’d just stop being friends with her. It had happened before… then again, girls had been a lot meaner back then. Kylie grinned, nodding. Of course she remembered!
“Of course,” she answered, “it was only the best climbing tree around.” And how could she forget it? She climbed that oak tree even when she wasn’t hanging out with Austin. Kylie looked back to the front of the room, wondering where the lesson had gone. They’d gone from ropes to lights which confused her. Wasn’t it supposed to be ropes all day? She shook her head, figuring it would be best to just go with the flow in a class like Theatre Tech. Kylie returned her gaze to Austin, only to find that he was holding out a paper rose. She gave a quiet exclamation of surprise, carefully taking it from him.
“It’s so pretty,” she murmured, ignoring the sudden homesick feeling. She really did miss Connecticut and, though it was just made of paper, the rose did remind her of Murford Park. In fact, Kylie thought as she peeked back up at Austin from behind her bangs, he reminded her of Connecticut. Of simpler times. Kylie smiled, shifting in her seat a little, still holding onto the paper rose with delicate fingers. “How could I forget? They’d been some of the best times of my life.” And now that he was here, in New York, and they’d reunited and were in the same class and… She nibbled on her lower lip, fighting to contain her excitement. Her life would only get better from here on out.
