personality
Headstrong and Opinionated -- Grace is very opinionated. She believes in what she believes in, and she'll be damned if you don't hear about it. And God help you if you have a differing opinion, because she will debate you until she is blue in the face. However, don't think that she is closed off to new ideas. She just looks at all sides of an argument before making her decision. She is very set in her ways though, it takes a lot to change her mind.
Proud and Intelligent -- If her experiences have done anything, they have upped her pride. Since coming out, she doesn't make it a secret anymore. She hides nothing of her personal thoughts and feelings, because she believes that she needs to share these things with the world. She is intelligent, but not overtly so. She is very good at seeing the world from other peoples eyes, and often uses it to empathize with people.
Descriptive, yet discreet -- She has a therapist, who helps her deal with her anger and her acceptance of herself. Her therapist has recommended that Grace start writing an online journal of her feelings and experiences with day to day life. Grace has gotten very good at writing, and she quite enjoys what she does. She has gotten very very good at being incredibly descriptive, but leaving a sense of mystery. You'd never be able to tell she was talking about someone, unless you were in fact that someone. Her discretion is on of her favorite qualities about herself, something she prides herself on.
past
Dylan Marshall was the pride and joy of the Marshall family. He was a good kid with good morals, and wanted to follow in the footsteps of war hero daddy. He was the idol of his little sister, Grace. Always included her in his activities, helped bring her up right. But when Grace was eight, tragedy struck. Dylan was killed by a drunk driver in a head on collision, just months before he was about to graduate and join the Army. Joseph and Lillian were devastated, but that was nothing compared to the depths of sadness that plagued Grace. Dylan had been her guiding light, one of her best friends. And now he was gone.
But while some might have rebelled, angry at God and the world for taking him, Grace let it motivate her further. She worked harder in school, joined sports, and in middle school joined up with the NJROTC. it was also right about this time that her intolerant classmates started calling her all sorts of terrible names. To them she was 'lesbo' 'dyke' and 'tranny'. They had pieced together her boyish tendencies, coupled with the fact that she only ever hung out with boys as proof of her sexuality. To prove them wrong, she attempted to date.
Jamie reminded her so much of her brother, that's why she chose him for her boyfriend. It was all fine and dandy, up until he tried to kiss her. The kiss was not only boring, but it downright disgusted her. She pushed him off, and promptly broke up with him. When he started calling her a lesbian, she let it roll off her shoulders, and decided to test the theory. By now she was a freshman in high school, and she wasn't the only girl questioning her sexuality. She met a girl named Allie, and Grace knew that she was in fact a lesbian. Not that she acted on it of course, because her parents would be livid. Also there was that pesky Don't Ask Don't Tell thing. And she was joining the Army. She would do what Dylan never got to.
Of course, she couldn't do half the jobs she wanted to in the Military, so she settled on becoming a Military nurse. That simply meant scoring high on her ASVAB (which wasn't a problem, Grace was an intelligent child), graduating with high marks, enlisting, and then taking the necessary training. This flashed past in a blur, her mother and father so proud of her. They assumed that she never had a boyfriend because she was so focused on serving her country. This was close enough to the truth that Grace didn't feel like correcting them. She was shipped off to Afghanistan, where she spent a year doing a job she loved.
Then a problem started. She fell in love with another nurse. Jessica was beautiful and intelligent, everything that Grace simply adored. And Grace was sure her feelings were mutual. She confessed one night, and to her horror, Grace learned that Jessica was not only not interested, but entirely homophobic. Her commanding officer knew before the week was out, and Grace was discharged from the Army.
present
She didn't receive such a warm welcome home from her parents, who told her that her lifestyle was a sin against God, and until she learned to fly straight, she wasn't allowed back in their house. They wrote all this in a letter, where they managed to add in that Dylan would have been ashamed of her. Crying, she packed her things up in her car and moved away, somewhere, anywhere.
Of course, she ended up in New York, where everyone seemed tolerant at the very least. She got a job as a school nurse at a cushy private school, and she lives in a small apartment where a lot of teachers live. She got a new girlfriend, but when she found out that Don't Ask Don't Tell was finally repealed, she was left angry and bitter. Tami just left her, and now she just goes to work, bored of the same routine of everyday life.
