personality
Inconsistency and confusion probably describe Hannah best. One moment she is one way, and the next she is another. Rarely does she know what she wants, and when she figures it out, it's subject to change. Thus, she can be a bit exhausting to be around. She is very loyal, but at the same time, she is also a little detached and not extremely emotional. She will be committed and remain faithful if you manage to reel her in, but do not try to tie her down. Hannah will resent you for it. If you want her to like you, be true and honest, not only to others, but also to yourself. You don't need to follow Hannah's rules. In fact, you can form your own code of ethics, but be sure to live by them. Otherwise, Hannah will feel like her time is being wasted and cut you off anyway.
Passion is not really the right word for Hannah. Rather, her love will be subtle and unassuming. Small tokens of affection mean more to her than loud and ostentatious declarations. Hannah is intense, but may seem prefer to be platonic most of the time because she guards herself so heavily. Hannah will always try to know your deepest thoughts and secrets, but her own dreams will be beyond your reach. While knowing this isn't fair, she will do nothing to change it. Her brain and creative outlets are her own treasures that she shares with so very few.
Hannah can turn on the charm when she wants too. Her mind is quite unpredictable and most find it hard keeping track. She will live in the present, then suddenly be wistful about yesterday and then, become enthusiastic about tomorrow. This is in regards to things both good and bad, and tends to hold a grudge.
One misconception about Hannah is that she has mood swings. This, honestly, is not the case. Hannah is a calculating creature. This is not to say she's not a good person, inherently. But she is selfish and spoiled. Not with items, but emotionally. If there is something that doesn't sit right with her- and honestly it can be something as basic as her being too comfortable with you- she will sabotage it. She will say something in a seemingly innocent and peaceable way that is really an attempt to piss you off. Her moods don't swing, they ease.
In her youth, she had been rather cheerful, despite her parents mutual disdain of each other. She was naive and sweet, charitable- though this was in part because she had little value of money. However, since she has awoken, a certain cloud hangs over her. She is no longer social, preferring solitude. In ways, she wants very much to be normal, to not shift. However, because she can never have that, she has learn to hate much of the best things of humanity.
past
Hannah Vulpini's home life wasn't a happy one.
Her father, Franklin Vulpini Sr., was the heir to what was- at one time- an impressive small fortune, as well as an influential name. His own parents were Garth and Hannah, lacked the frugal skills that their son would one day possess. They spent lavishly on parties and social dinners, ignoring investments in favor of living a fun life. After five years, they were beginning to feel their irresponsibility bite back. And at the first notice of trouble, Hannah left, leaving Franklin and his younger brother Marlin behind. This scarred Franklin against frivolous and beautiful women, as much as it poised his brother to love them.
Garth raised his boys as best he could, and tried to keep up the appearances of the family being fine. The boys were given good educations. Franklin was rather studious and serious, having brief relationships with pretty girls, but never anything that stuck for more than a day or two. When he came of age, it was time for him to get married. The Chicago socialite scene expected him to marry a great beauty, and for them to be the envy of anyone who saw them. He did not. He married Olivia Mason, a simple businessman's daughter. The scene was under-enthused with his plain and rigid bride.
Olivia was handsome if inspected closely, but was in no way a beauty. Within a few weeks of marriage, she found out this was exactly what her new husband wanted. Someone homely who would make him children and never leave. Heart broken and disillusioned, Olivia's only solace was religion (as she was a staunch Catholic) and maintaining the household. Franklin himself was busy with rebuilding the dwindled fortune of his Father, and was a strictly frugal man.
The children they produced were not made from love. When he first came to his wife, he informed her that she had to focus on a son the whole time. He wanted a son, who could inherit his business one day. They got pregnant, which was a relief to his wife as she did not take enjoyment in his rough and short nightly visits, and indeed had a son who was named Franklin Jr. The nightly visits resumed again, this time with the order of them having a daughter.
They did not have a daughter. They had a son, Joel. Franklin Sr was furious, even more so to find out that Olivia could no longer have children. His wife, on the other hand, was relieved as this put a final end to acts of intercourse between husband and wife. As a Father, Franklin was not warm. His children feared him, and were allowed few delights. He was strict that they should occupy themselves with prudent, 'manly', hobbies that were difficult for sickly Joel.
When the boys were about four and three, their Uncle Marlin came home from his travels with his new wife Felicia. Franklin was instantly enthralled with pretty Felicia, who had a striking resemblance to his Mother. Felicia, on the other hand, was hopelessly in love with Marlin. Not wanting Felicia to go, Franklin invited his brother to live with his family, where he could keep his sister in law close by.
During this time, Marlin and Felicia attempted to conceive, with no luck. Still, there was a sudden light in the household, despite Franklin's envious cloud often looming by. Even Olivia found temporary solace in having Felicia as a friend. They played with the children, and Olivia listened in envy as Felicia expressed her unyielding love for Marlin. Then, very suddenly, Marlin grew ill. Horribly ill, and it was as if a candle was snuffed out in the home. All except Franklin Sr. bore a grim face, as they waited for Doctor's verdict. While Marlin's mysterious ailments were studied, Felicia grew more and more depressed, her beauty graying. Olivia assumed it was from stress, until Felicia explained that she was pregnant. Olivia was initially sympathetic, expecting Felicia's worry of being a single mother in the event that Marlin dies to be incredibly stressful.
But, no. That wasn't it. It was that Marlin was not the father.
Franklin was.
Olivia, betrayed and hurt, tried to ask for further details. Felicia would put forth nothing other than she had not intentionally seduced him. Furious, she went to her husband, who was expecting her. She demanded to know what he planned to do about this, horrified that her sons would know of their Father's sinful nature. Calmly, Franklin explained that Felicia's pregnancy did not leave their family, and when the baby girl was born (he was always determined that the baby was a girl) that Olivia would be the one to be Mother to the child. Seeing no other option- as divorce was not an option for her- she agreed. Felicia, ashamed of the child and what happened, signed papers agreeing to this plan of action.
Marlin, however, did believe divorce was an option, and terminated the marriage soon after the child was born.
The child was a girl, as Franklin predicted. He named her Hannah, after his treacherous Mother, as he loved the child greatly and wanted to be reminded to not love her 'too much'. The name horrified Olivia, but she loved the child all the same. Olivia became set on protecting Hannah from her Father, as she believed her husband to be a sick man. And Franklin doted on the girl- where he was staunch and strict with his boys, he was overly generous with her.
As she grew, Hannah became an empathetic and mischievous girl. She loved playing tricks and playing hide and go seek with her brothers- even if Frankie Jr. made it a habit of not seeking her. It was apparent to the observant little girl, that her Father seemed to pay her favor. And, it would be a lie to say that the spoiled behavior did not become ingrained within her. Still, she took little joy in her brother's jealousy. Frankie was quite open with his disdain for her, often teasing her about being dressed up like a princess (which she had little taste for, being an active child) and breaking the daily gifts the generally frugal Franklin presented her with. Joel was quieter about it, attempting to act as a bridge between eldest and youngest.
She was an innately creative girl, loving to paint any surface she could get. Her Mother found this bothersome often, and attempted to apply some discipline. Franklin would not hear of it until Hannah was thirteen.
Upon asking his daughter what she wanted for Christmas, she- being a late bloomer- requested a bra, after explaining that that was how Danielle Parker got Thomas McClair to like her as it pushed all the chest fat up. He harshly denied the request, furious at his daughter for reaching puberty. Having never faced her father's anger before, Hannah's first instinct was to rebel. Her first act was to dye her light red hair, which infuriated Franklin. Then it was announcing that all she wanted in the world was to move to New York City to take pictures and paint, and she didn't care if she didn't make a single dime. Little surprise, a war ensued; Franklin's failing attempts to make his daughter docile, and Hannah's succeeding attempts to keep him at bay.
Olivia, on the other hand, was quite proud of her daughter. She never hid from Hannah the source of her name, or the cruelty of her Father. In fact, Mother and Father often used Daughter as a battle ground, hidden under quiet and polite voices at the dinner table.
When she turned sixteen, while out and about with friends Daddy didn't approve of, Hannah noticed a woman who watched her eerily close. She kept seeing her throughout the day. Finally, being an impatient child, Hannah demanded to know what the woman wanted. She introduced herself to be Felicia Cartier, her Mother. Hannah tried passing her off as a confused woman, but could not help but notice how their eyes were so similar, and how their hair fell in the same way, and how they had identical birthmarks on their inner left wrist. Still, Hannah ran away, into the arms of the woman she knew to be Mother and demanded an explanation. Caught, Olivia explained the sordid tale.
Hannah was betrayed by everyone she knew and loved. She suddenly grew guarded and angry, demanding money to be sent to New York or else she was going to kick up such a fuss in the tabloids the family would never recover. She had no interest in knowing Felicia, who so willingly gave her away, nor asking her Father for his blessing on her journey. As far as Hannah was concerned, she had no family.
While on the Greyhound to New York, it occurred to Hannah that the family she had always had fantasized in her brain never was. And it was that realization, that something she wanted so bad would never be, woke her up.
present
Hannah is currently living in New York City, living her dream. She has not spoken to her Father, nor her elder brother. She speaks to her Mother and Joel on very rare occasion, and found out if she did not return to her Father, she'd be booted from the will. Stubborn and so very full of piss and vinegar, Hannah informed them all where they could stick that money if it pleased them so.
She is a part time student (University Junior), and works as a Bike Messenger. Hannah lives in Lost Boys Housing, and adores the contrast to the house of her raising. In her free time- generally at night- she does her art. Her 'trademark' art is to take a photograph of something, blow it up, then paint over it to turn it into something similar but different. Generally dark and morose.
She also has gained a little ability of turning into a blue eyed, red fox, at will. It just this little thing. She doesn't really know what use it serves in a practical sense (she can't help but have some comparable traits with her Father, after all), though it is a bit fun to run around in her vixen form. The world looks, sounds, smells so different, and she uses it in much of her art.
family
-Franklin Vulpini:: Father. A severe business man, harsh to her brothers, hateful to her Mother, and overly doting to Hannah when she was still in contact with him.
-Olivia Vulpini:: Mother. A good mother, but rather serious and unimaginative. The relationship between her and her husband has never been close. Hannah learned a few years ago that Olivia was not her biological mother.
-Franklin Vulpini Jr.:: Eldest brother, 26, married, shrewd like his Father. He and Hannah had a rough relationship, due to his nature being so similar to their Father combined with resentment of Hannah being doted on as a child.
-Joel Vulpini:: Brother, 25, sickly and more sensitive than his elder brother, Joel tended to be the mediator between members of his family. The least liked by his Father, the most loved by his Mother, and often lovehated by his siblings.
-Felicia Cartier (formerly Vulpini):: Biological Mother, Hannah has only spoken to her once. She was her Aunt, once married to Franklin Sr. brother Marlin. When she became pregnant by Franklin, the family hid it until Hannah was born, where she was taken by Franklin and Olivia, then quietly divorced.
-Marlin Vulpini: An Uncle that Hannah never met. He committed suicide when she was about one.

book title The Fox and the Grapes
backstory ONE hot summer’s day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch. “Just the things to quench my thirst,” quoth he. Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch. Turning round again with a One, Two, Three, he jumped up, but with no greater success. Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: “I am sure they are sour.”
Moral: It's easy to despise what you cannot get.
