...axel mathias vestergaard *
*What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals—and yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust? Man delights not me—nor woman neither, though by your smiling you seem to say so. *

distinctive traits A scathing sense of humor, a slightly morose attitude, and those thoughtful brown eyes.
...personal*
personality Coming from an upper-class family, Axel is fairly adjusted to getting what he wants, and for that reason, he has developed somewhat of a God-complex. He considers himself superior to most, even his friends, and he treats very few people as equals – this has earned him a great deal of enemies over time. However, since he is very good-looking and a master of words and charisma when he wants to be, he is also capable of being suave, manipulative, and convincing, and this, in turn, has earned him somewhat of a following. However, Axel rarely acknowledges this following at all; if anything, he ignores it. He pretends not to care about his popular status, but he really does, to a degree. After all, he is rather self-absorbed.
Axel's personality is often split between his vanity and egotism and his complete and total cynicism. Sometimes, it seems that he thinks a great deal of himself, but other times, he treats himself and others like garbage. Ever since the death of his father, Axel has become far more dark, brooding, and self-destructive; he engages in reckless sexual activity, sometimes does not eat or sleep for days on end, and has taken to smoking cigarettes. On his worst days, he will lock himself in his room and not even feign interest towards being social, as he is truly an introverted and antisocial creature at heart. The few that have been able to worm themselves into his circle of favor are the few who know just how bad Axel's mental state has become.
Though he is more than a little unstable, Axel is intelligent. When in his right mind, he is surprisingly logical about things - unfortunately, he is not always in his right mind. Axel has been known to be reckless, especially after the death of his father, and now he often acts more on impulse; before, he was far more thoughtful. He is obsessed with morbid topics like revenge and death, and once you get him talking about them, it's hard to get him to stop. Indeed, he's known to be completely silent one moment, ranting and raving the next. Though he doesn't often do it in public, Axel is capable of severe mood swings on a regular basis, and his family has been considering getting him examined for a mental illness.
He may not seem it at first glance, but Axel is surprisingly complex. It is very difficult to tell what he is thinking unless he voices it openly, and even then, sometimes he is lying. Again, he has conflicting aspects of his personality - hedonism vs. self-destruction, vanity vs. self-deprecation, etc. - and frequent mood swings, but it goes farther than that. Axel is a very deep person, as shallow as he can seem at times. There are many walls around him, especially walls he has recently built. He feels as if he can no longer trust people. There is a deep-rooted paranoia that is steadily growing in him. He's nearing the edge of a breakdown, and he doesn't want anyone to see. Indeed, Axel has become a maze, a labyrinth filled with dead ends. It takes persistence to navigate his psyche.
Axel holds grudges for a long time, and his opinions on people don't change easily. He isn't a firm believer that people are capable of change, so if you cross him and break his trust, odds are you are not getting back on his good side. He's got his dignity, but when you're Axel's enemy, he is not afraid to take you down, and take you down hard. Which is exactly what he plans to do with a certain uncle.
With a very twisted perception of love, it's uncertain if Axel can really feel love, or if he can discern between love and friendship. For all his emotional complexity, he isn't always the smartest when it comes to figuring out his feelings.
Aside from being cynical, Axel is known for being extraordinarily sarcastic and has a dark, twisted, and often scathing sense of humor. He finds a lot of things funny that most people do not and sometimes enjoys making others suffer from his jokes. In fact, he is known for his ruthless jokes at others' expense when he is in a bad mood. The only people he spares are those he cares about, and they are few and far between.
past Axel Vestergaard was born in Copenhagen on a rainy day. He was a surprisingly normal child; healthy, two loving parents, brown hair, brown eyes. No, apart from being rather wealthy, bright, and (as time showed) fairly attractive, Axel was quite the norm. He grew up attending a nice private school in Denmark and spending time with his parents; he became especially close to his father, Mathias, who taught him things like fencing and how to manage money.
Being an only child, Axel spent a lot of time with his parents when he was at home, and his relationship with his father only grew. The two of them were thick as thieves - aside from being his father and a wise mentor, Mathias was also one of Axel's best friends. He looked up to his father like he would look up to no-one else in his life. He loved his mother as well, but their bond wasn't the same.
His family didn't travel much apart from his father occasionally flying solo on a business trip, so most of Axel's world was confined to Denmark, particularly Copenhagen. He didn't really mind. Axel liked the consistency of it, the stability of his life. He liked being normal. He was planning admirably for the future, getting good marks in school, and was fairly popular, with a wide circle of friends.
Then, the day after Axel's seventeenth birthday, Mathias Vestergaard died.
The police reported it was a standard accidental death. While playing with his pet snake, a cobra, Mathias was bitten, and he died before anyone knew what was happening.
Only one problem, Axel thought. His father was too careful for that ever to happen. Ever.
Axel fell into a deep depression. Despite meetings with therapists and grief counselors and a mother desperately trying to get her son to talk with her, he hit bottom in mere weeks and stayed there. The situation was only worsened - severely - when his mother announced that she would be marrying Axel's uncle, Xenius, in order to ensure the safety of the corporation after Mathias's death. Axel regarded this as a load of bull, but he stayed silent, drawing farther and farther into himself. He lost most of his friends. His grades plummeted. He locked himself in his room for days and refused to come out. The death of his father destroyed him.
Several months later, when Axel was nearing eighteen, Gerta and Xenius announced that they would be moving to America in the company's interests. Axel lashed out. He did not want to leave Denmark; along with an old switchblade and some clothes, Copenhagen and their big house was all he had left of his father. But his "parents" were insistent, and before long, Axel found himself being dragged off to America against his will, as he was, unfortunately, not yet legally able to make his own decisions.
Axel hated having to speak so much English on a daily basis. He had learned it since childhood and knew it rather well - his father had helped him learn it - but he preferred to speak Danish, the language he had grown up with. He hated the American teachers and the American classmates in his new American school. He hated everything and everyone. He wanted to go home. He wanted his father back.
In a way, he wanted to die.
He slogged his way through senior year of high school and was accepted to J Barrie University, along with his best friend, Adrian. Relieved to be away from his "family" but feeling no less unhappy, he began to seek new ways to fill the empty space he felt within himself. He felt like an unanswered question. He hated that feeling.
And so, he turned himself towards a new directive: Revenge.
present
At present, Axel is attending college at J Barrie University. He spends a great deal of time with his best friend Adrian, and has an on-off relationship with a girl named Ophelia. He continues to be as self-destructive as ever and is well on his way to going over the edge. Though he maintains fairly good marks in school, they could be better if he spent less of his time out being reckless and more of it studying and doing his homework.

...literature*
book title Hamlet by William Shakespeare
backstory Hamlet is the son of the King of Denmark. However, his father has recently died at the beginning of the play some time after acquiring land from the king of Norway, and Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, has now become king and married Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. A few soldiers at the castle start seeing a ghost that looks like Hamlet’s father around the castle at night, and when Hamlet goes to investigate, the ghost tells him that he is indeed the spirit of Hamlet’s departed father, and that he was murdered by Claudius. Hamlet, immediately convinced by the words of this ghost, sets out to convince himself of Claudius’s guilt. In the process of his revenge quest, he ends up murdering Polonius, a court advisor, and driving Ophelia, his lover and the daughter of Polonius, insane – Hamlet is most likely responsible for Ophelia committing suicide. Claudius has a plot to kill him that he created with Laertes, the son of Polonius and brother of Ophelia, but at the end of the book, Laertes kills Hamlet (though he does apologize before he and Hamlet actually die), Hamlet kills Claudius and Laertes, and then Hamlet dies in Horatio’s arms, telling him to tell his story. That’s a very bare-bones description of the play.
