personality
RJ is one of those kids who is able to simultaneously take advantage of the crazy amounts of money his parents let him have to spend as he will while hating and angsting about his parents every chance he gets. Of course, he has the usual reasons. His parents hardly ever had time for him or showed the slightest bit of inclination to spend time with him or really be a part of his life. They did what they did for all problems and unpleasant things in life and through money at him and his nannies and private schools until he went away and stopped being an annoyance. The few times he actually got to spend time with them were the rare occasions that they were expected to bring their child to an event or whatnot. He was always expected to be on his best behavior at these outings, with the fear of God threatening him should he step out of line while out in public. It was this need to be proper in the public eye that has instilled in RJ a way of generally being concerned with how his actions affect his reputation.
That’s not to say that RJ is uptight ALL the time. To be honest, it’s only every once in a while that RJ really gets hyper aware of how popular and appreciated he is. Usually he’s all too happy to just act like one of the guys, joking and laughing and heading out to some of those over the top parties that really ought to be avoided. He treads the fine line between attempting to excel in areas such as sports well enough to garner attention from his parents and, failing that, screwing up bad enough to get it just as well. He figures that since he’s an entire continent away from his family he has to do things over the top to get any sort of response.
RJ is incredibly tight with his small group of friends. While he’s popular enough to pass well in school, well-liked by most, he only really cares for the few that he hangs out with. RJ is like that in most regards, preferring to go fishing with a pole rather than a net, as they say. Even in terms of romance and such he hardly sleeps around, preferring to fancy just one girl, one really spectacular girl, rather than going after anything that moves. RJ’s competitive nature tends to bristle a bit too easily and his sense of pride is wounded perhaps a bit too easily but at the end of the day, he’s a generally chill guy, happy to escape the annoyances of day to day life with his buddies.
past
RJ was the product of the marriage of two wealthy families. It was like he was the son of Californian royalty. His father John was the youngest of three wealthy business minded-brothers, all of whom worked for their father, the big cheese of the company so to speak. The Teach and Sons Personal Yacht Company was well known through all the elites of the city of Sacramento. It was simply the best place for some fabulously rich CEO to go to get the best quality ship and the best quality service. John Teach was put in charge of sales and customer service while his brothers took over design and production respectively. John was expected to be the most public figure, and he was the one who was sent to all the fancy conventions and such and all the important industry dinners to represent the company.
Millicent, on the other hand, came to notoriety through hard work and a way of using her good looks to her advantage in the business world. With the title of Miss Sacramento, 1989 and a degree in business in hand, she worked her way up through the ranks of wealthy real estate brokerages, known for sealing the deal quickly and efficiently. She was a Sacramento Cinderella who had found her perfect match in the outgoing, popular and rich businessman. John had found his trophy wife and Millicent had found yet another step on the ladder of success.
By all regards, RJ was the issue that neither of them had ever expected or particularly wanted. Always caught up with issues of appearance and reputation and such, once Millie was pblicly pregnant the problem couldn't just go away. The best way the two inexperienced superficial business moguls could deal with the anklebiter was by passing him off from nanny to nanny and hoping to God that he would stay out of the way as long as possible.
For a young RJ, this was less than pleasant. He hardly cared for Jenny or Vivian or Caroline or Sarah or even Mama Georgie, not to mention the scores of other nannies and nurses and whatnot that managed to micromanage his life throughout childhood. Of course, his parents were usually around when they weren't off gallivanting in Japan or New York at some Yachting convention or whatever else they could think up as an excuse, but they never really seemed to care about him or what he'd done. He still remembers the city wide slub soccer tournament from fourth grade, where he had spent WEEKS anticipating it, WEEKS practicing for it, WEEKS working and sweating and talking of almost nothing else. In the end he had been the one to score the final goal in the last few seconds of the game. He had gone home babbling excitedly to Janice, the current nanny, telling her how proud his parents were going to be when he told them.
When he eventually ran up to his mother and told her the only response he got was a brisk remark to Janice telling her that she was getting docked pay for not keeping a hold of RJ while Millie was clearly busy.
After that, RJ did just about everything he could to get noticed by his parents. Throwing himself even more into soccer, throwing himself into school, he tried to get their attention SOMEHOW, and not just when they needed to show him off at a party and toss him at some little kid table.
Failing to catch their attention through exceptional behavior, RJ tried the other direction for a bit in freshman year. At the local private school, RJ fell in with a bit of an unsavory crowd, much to his delight. A few run ins with the police fed his insatiable need for parental attention as they were forced to look up from their damn work and pay attention to him for once. The coup de grace was the raging party at Christmas break with boatloads of alcohol, boatloads of degenerates from across the city. The works. The event made the local papers, and it was the constant questions of "Was that YOUR RJ in the paper I saw the other day? I could have sworn he was a nice boy..." that finally crossed the line for Millie and John. By second semester, RJ was signed up for a distant, prestigious private school in New York, far away from anything that could possibly hurt his parent's reputations. It was apparently the perfect solution: John and Millie could tell everyone that he was doing just fine at the boarding school where they were straightening him out, and RJ was let go with a much looser leash.
present
Rj was hardly left without a friend in the world after his half-year transfer to Baum. He found himself a nice little niche rather quickly. RJ fell in with the soccer crowd, instantly buddying up with Freddie who he felt a total connection with. Not only was the hilarious little heartbreaker an avid soccer player and swimmer, but he seemed to be in a similar situation with the family. Not that he ever mentioned it much, but RJ had drawn his own conclusions and happily approved. Over time, Will and Addie were added into the mix. Will was just like one of the guys, with her ferocious demands to play on the all boys soccer team and her scoffs at anything even resembling frills. It was refreshing and oh so very attractive. Addie was the other end of the spectrum: mature and a bit of a breath of fresh air from the insanity of everyone else. She was a person that RJ could laugh with about Freddie's whoreish tendencies and whatnot.
RJ still is trying to get his parent's attention, somehow, someway. He's learned not to go TOO overboard. For a while upon first arriving in New York he'd floated the idea of attempting something worthy of the national news, but had quickly been shut down with the threat of being financially cut off. Since then it's mostly been a school thing. While soccer might not matter to his parents, he's sure he'll find something or other to catch their eye. Until then, he's more than happy to just hang out with his friends and joke around on the Osprey and find the funnest parties to run off to.

John Teach - Father - 42 - Executive Luxury Yacht Salesman
Millicent 'Millie' Teach - Mother - 40 - Real Estate Mogul for high end Californian beach houses
likes
1)Any and all attention from Mom and Pop
2)Long afternoons spent with the rest of the gang on the 'party boat' formally known as the Osprey
3)Awards and medals and all that jazz
4)Competition, especially when it comes to Baum. GO PIRATES!
5)Soccer, Swim Team and Spring Track, the trifecta of "S" named sports that Rj excels at
6)Not having to act formal or meet any expectations - being able to just chill out and hang low for a while
7)Foster the People and Go Radio, because they know how to write some nice damn songs
8)Regular vacations to somewhere tropical and warm. Rj can only take the icy cold city for so long before he has to call home and ask for some money so he can go to some island for Christmas Break or whatnot
9)Fishing. There's just something relaxing about it
10)Willow
dislikes
1)Little kids and babies and such. Rj thinks they're loud and noisy and really just not worth the trouble. He isn't particularly enthused by the idea of being a parent, either.
2)Mona, his current parent's current personal secretary or aid or whatever. He can do without the snarky "They're busy, just like I'm sure you should be" when he calls home, thanks.
3)The recent fashion craze for overly short clothing. Not necessary! Slutty clothes can stay home where they belong, because he doesn't need some chick from math class's boobs hanging out while she's writing something on the board. It's an issue of class, really.
4)Having to dress up all stuffy so he can go to some important event with his parents
5)Pistachios. Period.
6)Lizards. He doesn't trust 'em. Fucking tiny ass little dinosaurs do not make for a valid pet.
7)Facebook drama. He likes to make sure he's "offline" at all times
8)Not being recognized for all the hard work he's doing
9)Chemistry. Balancing equations just isn't working out for him
10)Losing to Freddie in just about anything. He can't stand it.
other notes RJ tries to be the upstanding member of the group. He'll pull out the fact that he's the oldest and make it a big thing to be nice to everyone to contrast himself from Freddie and such. When it's just them goofing off he'll be more than happy to swear and make crass jokes and be more of a wildball, but the moment he thinks other people are paying attention he clams up and worries about being as polite and proper as possible.

book title Peter and Wendy
backstory Captain James Hook was the arch nemesis of peter Pan in J.M. Barrie's fantastic work. A pirate who had lost his right hand to the magical flying boy and was driven mad by his cockiness, Hook was obsessed with 'good form,' a pirate with standards and manners if anything. He was plagued by the thought of being devoured by the ticking crocodile who had eaten his hand, and inevitably is finished off by said reptile.
