i ' m g o n n a m a k e y o u bend and break — — — — — — — // — — — — — — — Charley was exhausted. She had just spent the past four hours in debate practice, trying to teach her stupid team what Prima Faciae was…the idiots. And to top this wonderful day off, she had to tutor the queen of idiots, Miss. Regan Black. Not only was she more stupid than the entire debate team, she somehow was also a total bitch on top of that. If Charley had known that she'd have to deal with this monstrosity twice a week, she would never have signed up to be a tutor in the first place. For some reason all the things she did to look good for Yale ended up blowing up in her face…it was starting to get frustrating.
In addition, she had to walk all the way to Starbucks for this girl, instead of going to the library like all the other tutors and their tutees did, which just pissed her off even more. After the third time of getting kicked out of the library for being too loud, she decided that they'd better find another place to meet. Regan suggested Starbucks, and Charley accepted just because she was expecting her to suggest a strip club or something. They were never productive in the Starbucks, however. Not that they were extremely productive in the library, but at least Regan could hear Charley in that quiet room. Charley never had any trouble hearing Regan, even in the crowded coffee shop, because Regan's normal speaking voice was approximately at the volume level of five trains crashing at an intersection and exploding in a fiery blaze. Actually, Regan's voice was probably louder, and more horrifying, than that.
The worst part of these meetings, however, was that Regan spent as much time as she could pointing out that Charley didn't have any friends, or that Charley looked ugly, or that nobody liked her. As much as Charley combatted these insults with clever comebacks, she was still human…they hurt a little. And as the tutoring sessions continued, Regan was now a professional at knowing exactly what to say that would make her lose it. Charley hated not having control, and she despised when Regan could tell that she had gotten to her. However, Charley thought of it as a learning experience…being a lawyer was a tough job, and she knew that if she wanted to be successful she had to be able to handle the worst scrutiny.
Charley finally reached the Starbucks ten minutes later than they said they'd meet, and saw Regan waiting at a table wearing what looked like an outfit from a lingerie catalogue. Did that girl ever wear any actual clothing? "Well, don't you look…charming today. And I can see you brought your books too. Lovely." She sat down across from Regan, and plopped down her books on the table. This was going to be a fantastic end to a fantastic day.

i ' m g o n n a m a k e y o u bend and break — — — — — — — // — — — — — — — Regan's voice never failed to reach that horrifically loud level, it got Charley every time. She had to refrain from covering her ears and humming a lovely song because the sound was just so horrific. You'd think that after this many sessions with Regan, she would have gotten somewhat used to it. But no, it was still just as bad the hundredth time hearing it as it was the first. She was surprised more people in the Starbucks weren't looking over. Of course there were a few, there always was, but if Charley was just a random person in Starbucks she would have just went right up to Regan and asked if she could take the method acting lesson for her character of Godzilla outside, she was scaring people.
Charley had to refrain from reaching across the table and punching Regan in the face at the mention of her mother. She had no idea how Regan even found out about her mother, as Charley was not the type of girl who screamed "My mother died feel sorry for me" to the world. But Regan somehow found this out, and continually brought it up as if it was as common of a subject as what the weather was like outside. Well, Charley was not in the mood to deal with this shit at the moment, especially after the day she had. "At least I'm wearing clothing, something you should probably learn how to do if you ever want anyone to see you as anything but a complete whore, which at this point I'm starting to think is your life aspiration." It was almost sad how honest her comebacks were becoming at this point. She felt like she was on one of those intervention shows, except she really had no motive to put any effort into changing Regan, especially when Regan really didn't want to be fixed.
Just when Charley thought Regan couldn't say anything more to infuriate her, she had to imply that schoolwork was a waste of time. She did this often, but she said it especially bitchy this time. For one, Regan was the one who needed a tutor, not Charley. So this was technically a waste of Charley's time. She didn't have to be doing this, in fact, if Regan actually tried she could probably get rid of her if she really wanted to. But no, Regan preferred acting like a total idiot and pissing Charley off instead. The whole idea of it just made Charley want to kill someone. Or scrub a countertop especially hard when she got home, which was usually what ended up happening.
"I'm going to 'waste your time' with Biology today. Let's start off with the skin, a subject you should know a lot about considering your outfit choice, or lack there of. Now, what are the nine common toxins your skin is exposed to? Now keep in mind, I'm talking about regular people, not people who hang out in sleazy clubs all night. So I'm sure you wouldn't know the answer to this question from experience."

i ' m g o n n a m a k e y o u bend and break — — — — — — — // — — — — — — — There she went with the mother thing again. Jeez, this girl didn't quit. Was her goal to make Charley uncomfortable? What did she even get out of that? The satisfaction of saying to her friends Hey guys, I made this girl that's already really socially awkward feel socially awkward? It didn't make much sense to her…where was the challenge? And did she ever come up with any new material at all? Well, if she wanted to play dirty, she'd get dirty. Charley wasn't going down without a fight. "At least my mother was a decent human being. How's your father doing? Still in jail? When he gets out you two can compare notes on butt sex, I'm sure it will be an absolutely stimulating conversation." If Regan was going to play the parent card, she was going to get it thrown right back at her.
Charley's eyebrows raised as Regan mentioned being attracted to her. She was totally fine with homosexual and bisexual people, she just was not fine that Regan was aiming it towards her with the obvious intention of trying to make her feel uncomfortable. Charley hated people who used their sexuality to try to get somewhere that they could have easily gotten with just intellect, and Regan was really not making this easy for her. "Believe it or not, I get turned on by things like winter coats and people who pay attention to their tutors. So if you want me, you're going to have to change quite a few aspects about yourself." With that, Charley gave Regan a smirk and turned a few pages in her biology book to the section they were currently on.
Charley decided to take the approach of ignoring everything the rest of what Regan said because every word that came out of her mouth was a waste of her time to even bother responding to. She was being paid to tutor Regan, not to argue with her. "I'm still waiting for the answer to my question…" Charley said, tapping her foot against the cold linoleum floor.

i ' m g o n n a m a k e y o u bend and break — — — — — — — // — — — — — — — "You've yet to try it, huh? That's somewhat surprising to me. Well, I'm sure it's up there on your to-do list." It actually was surprising to Charley that Regan wasn't an expert in all sexual acts. But then again, and more likely, Regan could just not be admitting it. When Regan said Charley obviously knew more about the subject than she did, Charley almost laughed out loud. She had never been kissed, let alone know anything about sex of any kind. That fact never really bothered her, she was too busy with her schoolwork to worry about boys. It was weird comparing herself to Regan, though, who Charley would bet her life on was not a virgin many times over. Regan was only one year older than her, and yet was so much…sluttier. Poor thing, if only she had her priorities straight like Charley she could actually succeed in life.
Okay, now back to biology. Wait…did Regan just say the right answer? Well, she was missing a few, but it was still the right answer. "And carcinogenic ingredients in cleaning products, off gassing of furniture, and electromagnetic radiation. But that's a start." This was the part of tutoring Regan that frustrated her the most. It wasn't that Regan was an idiot, she just didn't try. The concept was completely foreign to Charley. How could you be even somewhat intelligent and just not apply yourself? She just wanted to reach across the table and strangle Regan and tell her that if she wasn't such a whore and a bitch, she could actually go places in life. But something told her that she could put a knife to Regan's throat and the point still wouldn't get across. It almost made Charley care what the hell happened to her that made her this way. The key word being almost.
Charley unclenched her hands that had subconsciously been clenching the biology book during this whole thought process and turned the page. This stuff really wasn't that hard, but she had to test Regan first to make sure she had actually done the reading. If she hadn't, it really would be a waste of Charley's time to even be here. She had no idea how she knew the answer to the last question, but she was guessing it wasn't from the book. "Okay, next question. Skin makes up what percent of our total body weight?"

i ' m g o n n a m a k e y o u bend and break — — — — — — — // — — — — — — — Did Regan just say she wasn't a complete slut? Did she even hear what she said when she was talking? "Really? Do you know the definition of slut? Let me remind you: it means a dirty, dissolute woman. So actually, you are a complete slut."
"Very good." Once again, Regan got the question right. Charley didn't get why they always wasted the first twenty minutes of each session doing absolutely nothing of importance when Regan knew the stuff already. Also, why did Regan even need a tutor if she could just learn the stuff by herself? It made Charley want to punch a wall.
And who was the guy who kept looking at her? For one thing, it was completely distracting and unnecessary, and secondly, why would a guy that good-looking even be attracted to Regan? Her voice sounded like a bomb exploding mixed with someone playing a kazoo, and that was only added to the fact that she looked like a raccoon who got stuck in a blender. Actually, it was probably more of a possibility that the guy was staring at her because she was just so annoying that he couldn't look away. It was like she was an optical illusion: she was just so outrageously, unbelievably ridiculous that people thought they needed to look at her more closely just to see if she was real.
Okay, now it was her least favorite part of the session: When Regan got to ask questions. "Well then, Regan, is there anything you would like to ask me about? After all, I am your tutor and I am, which I'm sure is going to be a surprise to you, so I'd brace yourself for this one: supposed to be helping you. I know, it's a shock. I'll give you a couple seconds to let that sink it, and then let's move on."

i ' m g o n n a m a k e y o u bend and break — — — — — — — // — — — — — — — Blah, blah, blah. Was Regan still talking? Funny, it was though her words were slowly meshing together until it all sounded like horribly loud, distorted, black noise. "I can't help those who don't want to be helped. If it were up to me, we would have spent the last half hour studying Biology, like we're supposed to be doing. I don't make the decisions here, you're the one directing me. If you don't like how this lesson's going, you have nobody to blame but yourself." She raised her eyebrows and looked down at her watch. Why did time always seem to move so slowly during these sessions? They had to be done somewhat soon, there was only so much of this she could deal with. There was always the small chance that Regan would have to go someplace, or get distracted by something shiny in the corner or something.
"Yeah. I have just one question. If you hate me so much, then why the fuck are you here?"
That was a good question. Why was she here? For the first time that day, Charley was speechless. She spent twice a week with this stupid girl who just tried to break her down every chance she got for….what, really? She finally managed to spurt out a quiet "I…don't know." Sure, it would look good on her college applications. But she could have given up Regan and have gotten another tutee easily. But yet, as annoying, stupid, loud, and obnoxious Regan was, something kept on bringing Charley back. Did she just like to argue with her? Maybe, arguing was always good practice for debate. But that didn't make sense, as arguing with Regan wasn't exactly intellectually stimulating. It was almost as if Regan reminded her of someone…but not anyone she could remember, of course. Another Regan would be hard to forget. Then again, Regan could have left Charley and gotten another tutor just as easily as it would have been for Charley to get a new tutee. Although, Regan probably enjoyed these sessions much more than she did. She imagined Regan took pleasure in making her suffer, and she mentally reminded herself to keep all small children and animals as far away from Regan as possible.
After realizing she had been sitting there in silence for the past minute and a half, she cleared her throat and said, "Um…we should really get back to Biology."
