The smell of baking bread engulfed the little shop as Elle put her last batch of bread in the ovens. She wiped the sweat off her forehead and sat down on one of the stools surrounding the small, green granite island. Flour was everywhere, lone choclate chips dusted one counter and there was a small spill of yeast on the island. It was something Elle had never been good at. Being neat. She would always make a mess whenever she baked.
It was around seven now, the store would open in an hour, she had to clean up soon and get everything in order before it did. Where were her girls? They always seemed to be late when she needed them. Oh well. Elle got out a wet cloth and began cleaning the flour off of everything, including her face. The cleaning wasn't fun, but it was so worth it. The smell, the taste of the bread and pastries were worth the cleaning, were worth the annoying customers and the unhelpful assistants. It was all worth it.
Right as her girls walked in the oven timer went off. Girls, get the bread out of the oven and make sure the bagels are ready. And one of you, please help me clean up. If we aren't ready by opening time, both of you are getting your paychecks docked. Now hurry! Elle took off her big frilly apron and hung it on the door to the store. She sighed as she walked out of the kitchens and into the store front. She pulled out her half apron out of the drawer and quickly tied it around her waist. It was almost time for, in fifteen minutes all hell would break loose and Elle would just have to smile and take orders.
Elle hurriedly put bagels and bread in the windows and arranged them neatly. Pastries went behind the counter and cakes went on nice little platters on top of the counter for all to see. The clock ticked the minutes away. They had ten minutes 'til opening. Would they make? The girls rushed around her as she went back into the kitchens and finished up her breakfast.
What could she care if they were ready in time? It wasn't her salary on the line. It was just an average morning.
