The sun streamed straight through the shop windows and into Elle's bloodshot eyes. Another onset of pain shot through her head. She had been up too late the night before, experimenting with a new recipe she was trying to concoct. She was trying to make the perfect eclair. She had been up almost the whole night using different fillings and icings. She had tried different cooking times. They had all been good, but none had been superb. She had tried more sugar and less. Same with flour. And now after all her work, she had a huge headache and had still not come up with a perfect recipe. She sighed and reached for another Advil in her pocket.
It was busy as usual. Both men and women bustled in and out of the little shop. "One poppyseed bagel!" A man at the front of the line shouted at her. Did parents not teach their children to say 'please' anymore. And then of course they grew up into disgusting and rude men, like the one standing in front of her. Elle smiled and put a warm bagel inside one of the shops paper bags. It had 'House of Bread' plastered on the front more than once.
With a grunt for a thank you, the man handed her the money and walked out. Men. What disgusting creatures. The Advil had helped her headache slightly, but it had obviously ignored to help her exhaustion and the bad mood she was currently in. The next customer came up, asking for another bagel, this time chocolate chip. It was a child! Oh what a lovely one, too. Nice and fat. Such a beautiful little boy. Oh if only Elle could freeze time and not let this one grow up, just let him get fatter and fatter. What a splendid thing that would be. Freezing time. Ah, but that couldn't happen, no, he would grow into a horrendous man, and would forget his please and thank yous, soon enough. She handed him, a toasted bagel and before he could pull out his wallet, she said, "Don't worry, darling, it's on the house." And then the most cheering words in the world came. "Thank you!" Elle was almost sad when he walked out the door, out of the shop and on. On to growing up, to time moving. How sad.
But she could not cry, it was back to business, on to the next customer. Another man, this one didn't even look up at her as he asked for a long order of, "Three poppyseed bagels, a chocolate chip, two toasted cinnamon, five plain, and an asiago Parmesan." Such a long order and not even a please. Elle sighed and reached for one of the big bags under the counter and opened it. Twelve bagels. TWELVE bagels. How big was this guy's family? She reached for the last five plain bagels and stuck them in. They didn't have asiago Parmesan, but he didn't have to know that, she reached for a cheesy bagel and then a chocolate chip. Elle put two cinnamon in the toaster and then heard a yell from behind her that almost broke her mask of cheerfulness and kindness, "Come on, Hurry up!" Elle reached for a a few poppyseed bagels and nearly spit on them. 'What a jerk! She had been up all night and was ready to snap.
