It was a beautiful day outside. The sun was shining, the grass was green, and parents were taking thier little kids to run rampant around the park. Of course, some people weren't exactly in the mood to notice and simply had an obligation to be here.
Like Blake Damon.
Oh, how he hated the searing sunlight that felt like it was burning his pale skin whenever he had to step out of the shade to get out of people's way. The park was so crowded today. How the hell could it be this stuffy outside? Blake wasn't the one for this much contact with normal people. Every time they touched there skin, a shiver went through him. Mainly because his brain got imploded with the scene of thier deaths according to what fate was leading them to at the moment. But really, he's seen worse. It's just that touching them made him feel... what was it? Guilt, probably. That he knew beforehand what would happen to them, yet couldn't do a damn thing about it.
Well, at least they weren't talking to him, not yet at least. Though he knew someone would ask him a stupid question sooner or later, that was how it was in the park.
Why was her here again? Oh right, the body. Poor girl was still alive, and had been since they man dumped her seemingly lifeless body here. She was gonna die in about ten minutes, and he had to be there when it happened. Blake felt the pull of the death leading him towards the destination, and he began to walk.
Sure enough, a woman got in his way before he could get there with a question. At first he ignored the question, knowing it would probably be ridiculous and a waste of his time, but then his mind replayed it in his head.
"Are you stalking me or something?"
He looked at the woman, a slight hint of recognition appearing on his face, but disappearing just as fast. He sort of remembered her like he did every person he dealt with that died or was dying, but other than that, he couldn't remember when or where she was from.
"It's hard to stalk someone when you don't even know who they are," he said sarcastically, and began to walk away. He needed to do his job.

"And where was 'there', by chance?" This girl was getting in his way. He really needed to handle the situation with the...
Shit.
This made things so much more difficult. He was implicated in a bunch of murders as a suspect, because he happened to be there, so he tried to stay away from law enforcement as much as possible. And he could hear the sirens already.
shitshitshit...
"Sweetheart, she's not gonna make it." Even now, her soul was passing through him little by little. But he couldn't move until the process was complete, or who knows what would happen. It was just like instinctual. One of those silent conditions he learned when this whole thing started.
And then, she was gone. The feint rise and fall of her chest was gone, and the soul had fully passed through him.
Which meant it was time to get the hell out of there.
"Sorry to be rude, but I really must be going," he said, turning and walking in the direction he had been going in the first place. He wasn't running to attract suspicion, but just walking at a faster pace. Blake didn't see if the girl was following or not.
Frankly, he didn't care.

“Pike. Three months ago. The bridge.”
He hesitated, but kept going. That sounded familiar, but...
Wait. Pike. He had been to Pike. On that night whenhe had been fed up with death and ran away to see if getting out of New York City would stop the sadly familiar pull that led him to where his next client was.
It hadn't worked.
Blake had been successful in his search for peace, up until he got a vision of two drowning girls. He skid his car to a stop, almost killing himself. No, he couldn't get away. Why couldn't he just get away?
This was the girl who had been saved. How could he forget her? She had gone crazy when she found out her friend didn't make it. And all he could do was stand there and watch as she was heartbroken.
That was when he realized he couldn't escape this, no matter what. It certainly put a damper on things.
“What were you doing there?”
"I was trying to escape something that I couldn't escape from," he said with a still distracted look in his eyes. And he said it as if this were enough explanation and continued walking.

“Why didn’t you help!?”
...Why did she have to ask the most complicated question there was? There were so many reasons he couldn't help. For one thing, he couldn't interfere. It was against those silent rules. Two, he knew that he never could have gotten there in time to save her if he could, because she was already dead. And three, it wasn't his job to save lives, it was his job to take them to elsewhere. That was just it.
But obviously this girl wouldn't be satisfied with any of those answers. And it wasn't like he could stand there all day and explain to her how he was the grim reaper and there were rules and etc. He had a job to do.
"There was already somebody who rescued you, right?" he began. "And there was no way I could get to you. If he couldn't save your friend then there was no chance..." Realizing he sounded really insensitive, he tacked on "I'm sorry," at the end.
But he still sounded insensitive. Perhaps he was insensitive. But why should he care?

“I’m sorry. I just…I really miss her.”
"It's okay." Blake's reply was curt and he knew it. There wasn't much else he could say to that. He didn't really understand what it was like to lose someone you loved, because his whole family dying wasn't much of a trauma for him, to be honest. Almost instantly, he had other things to worry about, because that's when he was given his job.
At least, that's what he told himself whenever that tiny empty feeling he felt whenever he saw families being happy.
It's not like it was a big issue. Maybe it was more that he knew how easily it could end. He had seen it before, what with all the death around him.
“Can we start over?”
"Uh, sure?" Blake really didn't intend on making a new friend. Or a friend, seeing as he was lacking in those considerably. "I'm Blake," he offered, holding out a tentative hand. At least they were far enough away from the crime scene now that he wouldn't be recognized by the police that had arrived.
