personality[/i]
Intelligent, Arrogant, Contradictory
November's personality is not one of a person normally liked by the general populous. She's factual beyond measure, and cocky because of it. But November, like most people, is a creature made of contradictions. Though book-smart, she is far from intelligent about her own feelings or things that most people tend to concern themselves with, including but not limited to popular culture and rules of the streets. Smart, but dense. Anti-social, but lonely. Hopeful, but pessimistic. Boring, but unusual. Obstinate, but bendable. Her personality is most easily described as contradictory and layered, and most easily explained as one difficult to explain.
Unstable, Unhealthy, Unconsolable
Denial is not just a river in Egypt. It's one large pillar that November Starr has built her entire life around and spent it relying on. She suppresses all dangerous emotions regularly, but eventually they can't stay under wraps. Bottling up feelings is a daily routine, as unconscious and natural to her as waking up and putting on clothes, drinking a glass of water, pulling her laptop over and watching political humor, and other things done simply because that was what she did. Unfortunately, unlike most of the habits listed, this particular one eventually resolves itself in the form of a mental breakdown, which last resulted from carrying the blame for her roommate's attempted suicide. However, despite her prided brains, she fails to see her problem, and continues in this cycle. She is not easily strayed from a path once she's decided on it, and another unfortunate path she's alway felt she must choose is one of self-fault, self-resentment, and self-pity. She hates herself for it, but she feels that it's just something she'll always be forced to accept about herself.
Sarcastic, Playful, Socially Awkward[/i]
Nov wouldn't seem like the type of girl with a sense of humor at first-glance, or second-glance, or, admittedly, third-glance, but if all the glancing stopped and they took the time to talk instead, they'd find a well of sarcasm and teasing remarks. The fact that she isn't one to forget things easier also means that she'll remember those embarrassing moments you never want to, and bring them up when she feels they're appropriate to share, otherwise known as when she wants to embarrass you or wen she wants to blackmail you. However, most of the time, these things are brought up without malice, and simply for the purpose of a good-humored tease. Being slightly anti-social at times, and avoided by most as an annoyance and an oddity that would only last in most people's social logs as the one to stay away from, November doesn't have the best people skills in the world. When she's tired, this becomes even worse, and she becomes an easily-entertained mess of giggles, pointing out the obvious and finding it to be the most entertaining thing. Though this part of her is sometimes seen as endearing, the personality often shifts into something far less pleasant that will rain buckets of dead crickets and lizard poop down on you if you so much as think of interrupting her sleep. Nearly always a rational thinker, her threats do not contain anything she cannot obtain.
past
November was born to Taylor Norman and Carson Starr eight months after a drunken night at a New York party. They were both twenty-one, and had already been talking about getting married. As such, they were elated to learn of her pregnancy, and were officially married three months later. They picked the name November after Carson's Grandmother and Great-Great Grandmother.
But the joy of a new baby would be cut short, when Taylor went into early labor, and there were an abnormal number of complications. Taylor was gravely ill for the first two years of November's life. She died two weeks after her daughter's second birthday, never getting to hold the baby in her arms. November only knew her face through pictures, and would have forgotten if it wasn't for the striking resemblance between mother and daughter.
Carson remarried when November was eight, much to her quiet dismay. He tried to have two babies with his new wife, both of which were still-born. Nov slowly grew up around the idea that products of love, and especially sex, caused only death and grief. Carson and his new wife, Jessica, then decided that they didn't want to try and bring yet another child into this world, as it might also die before it ever had a chance. However, the younger bride refused to take any sort of test to confirm this. She hated the idea of not being able to have a child.
Soon after this, Jessica began to search for a way of grieving that didn't involve her husband's comfort. Even though he alone had gotten her through the first two deaths, the second child had been born looking exactly like Carson in his baby pictures. Jessica couldn't look at his face without it breaking her heart with thoughts of what could have been. As it was, Jessica soon got involved in the world of drugs and did everything she could to avoid looking at her husband for two years.
When November was thirteen, Carson caught his wife being unfaithful in a motel room, and violently beat the man she was with. They never saw him again. However, he came too late. Jessica had gotten pregnant from that man. Carson was enraged, and forced his wife to abort the child.
After this, Jessica slowly lost the rest of her will to live, already so fragile. Her husband could never trust her again, and she felt as if she'd killed three children. Five weeks after this third pregnancy-gone-wrong, Jessica slit her wrists in the bathtub, carving the word murderer into both of her arms. Fourteen-year-old November was the one to find her. She'd never liked her step-mother, but she'd never felt more pity for anyone but that woman and herself. Her resentment soon turned to her father, particularly when the autopsy revealed complications with an abortion that November had only heard about through her door in the middle of the night, and refused to believe until them. Jessica would've died eventually anyways.
present
Unable to handle the grief in the house anymore, November applied for a boarding school, and her phenomenal grades got her in easily enough. Her father didn't object, but then her father didn't do much of anything anymore. He just sat on the couch all day, staring at pictures of those he'd lost, soaked in sweat, tears, and alcohol. November had to steal his credit card and forge his signature to send herself to Baum.
November has told very few people about the events of her life, and people rarely bother to ask. Even when they do, sometimes the darkened expression she gains sets them off from the whole thing. She only tells those she's closest to, and usually waits until after she knows about their family situation, which they usually bring up on their own. She shuts herself off from people as much as she can, rarely making friends. Her goal in life was to not love anyone. She couldn't help hoping that if she was successful, there wouldn't be as much grief around her. Unfortunately, with the addition of one Tuesday Davenport to her life, she has failed to live up to her expectations, as usual.
After much denial, and the attempted suicide of her roommate, one of the few people she actually cares about, she finally admitted out loud to Tuesday that she loved him. Owl appeared to her the next morning. The bird was quite eccentric, and though many aspects of her life now made sense to her, it brought up more questions than it answered. She's intensely interested in finding other characters, but doesn't really have an idea of where to start.
