Kylie didn’t need a tutor! So what if she dozed off in class and then never really tried to catch up on her work? It wasn’t her fault that the teachers were boring and her schoolwork difficult. It also wasn’t her fault that sleeping came so easily to her. She blamed the stuffy atmosphere of the classroom. To make matters worse, she was getting a tutor in English! Kylie knew English! She knew it perfectly well. At least she could spell things out correctly unlike most who shortened ‘your’ into ‘ur’ or didn’t know the difference between ‘there,’ ‘they’re, and ‘their.’ She knew all of those!
Huffing tiredly, Kylie continued navigating her way through the Barrie campus. It was SO MUCH BIGGER than Baum’s campus. It was confusing and exhausting; she was very tired and she couldn’t wait to take a nice nap in the library. Or the Research Center, as she’d been told it was called. Kylie really hoped her tutor wasn’t that bad. She hoped they’d let her take a short rest before getting into work. It would probably be just her luck, though, to receive the strictest tutor they had. Kylie shuddered at the thought.
Finally finding the Research Center (after accidentally walking into two classrooms, one lecture, and a counselor’s office), Kylie almost collapsed to the floor once she made it through the doors. Most of the tables were occupied; Kylie wondered why there were so many college students in here. Didn’t they have class? And if they didn’t, why weren’t they out… partying or doing whatever it was college students did? Shaking her head, Kylie quickly claimed an empty table. Without a second thought, she set her bag and on the table and rested her head onto it.
Hopefully, ‘Darcy Robinson’ would be able to find her easily enough.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Darcy forced her eyes open and looked to her right. The alarm clock read 4:50 and she had been asleep since... what, 2:00? And she still had heaps of work to do, what a drag. Sometimes she thought going to college was the stupidest thing she ever did... then again, she did NOT want to go back to living a 'happy' life with her parents in London. No, it was better to stay here...
Crap.
Darcy pushed herself up, her eyes wide in realization. She looked at her wrist and three words were written in sharpie: tutoring at five. Of course! She had signed up hoping to earn some money, but was it really more precious than her sleep? Not really, but Darcy kept her promises. Plus, she didn't want to get in trouble and end up with a professor screaming at her.
She pulled on a J. Barrie tee shirt and a pair of comfortable sweatpants. Quickly nabbing a few textbooks and some papers, she flew out of her new dorm when she realized she'd left her shoes inside. She wheezed for breath (yeah, running wasn't really her area of expertise) as she ran back and slipped on sandals. She checked her hair in the mirror (it was a mess, but not as bad as it could have been) and sprinted out, turning into the wrong hallways at first and having to turn around. Pressing the wrong button in the elevator, Darcy had to go up to floor four, then finally down to the first.
People watched her with disapproval as she ran across the lawns of the University, heading for the research center. She took a quick look at the paper: she was to tutor a girl named Kylie Jacobs at 5 o'clock sharp on the broad subject of English. Oh, she was probably a delinquent or something! And Darcy couldn't handle delinquents! But she didn't have time to panic; instead she burst into the research center with gusto.
Darcy blinked as she entered the quiet atmosphere. Most of the tables were occupied, and she looked at the clock. 5:04...close enough.
Now, if she could just find this student... looking around, Darcy only saw one table with one person who seemed to be in high school. her head rested on her bag.
"Hey, my name's Darcy Robinson, and yours is Kylie... right? Sorry I'm a little late... er... here." She sat down and looked across from her expectantly. Luckily all the adrenaline had woken her up so at least her eyes weren't begging for sleep. She put a 10th grade English textbook in front of her.

It couldn’t have even been five minutes when her tutor arrived. Kylie had, after all, gotten here at 4:59 which hardly left any time to rest as the tutoring was to start at 5:00. However, that meant her tutor was late, if only a few minutes. Kylie wished she could have been a few more minutes late. She lifted her head and pulled her fingers through her hair. Time to wake up. The girl across from her looked as if she’d just gotten out of bed, from the state her hair was in. It wasn’t terrible! Just… Kylie knew what hair looked like when you just woke up and had no time at all to fix it. And it looked like her tutor’s.
“Right. Hi, I’m Kylie.” Her smile was forced and a bit tired, but she could feel the sleepiness drifting away. It surprised her, really. She thought the idea of studying would make her even more exhausted. “It’s fine! I was just getting a bit of shut-eye.” Was it even a good idea to tell her tutor that? Oh, no big deal, I was napping before you got here. I clearly don’t respect you at all. Oh, she really could be so stupid sometimes! Darcy set an English textbook in front of her and Kylie had to resist groaning. Not only had she forgotten her own textbook which made her feel guilty and forgetful, she was already making a bad impression. At least Darcy had brought a textbook so maybe she wouldn’t notice anyway…
Kylie glanced at the nearest clock and pondered asking Darcy why she’d been late. However, that wasn’t the best way to treat your tutor. Especially since she was in college and could be doing much better things than tutoring some high school-er. Kylie opened the book and flipped through it absentmindedly. “I really know most of this,” Kylie started, a bit defensively and also somehow pleading. “I just get so sleepy in class, I can’t focus sometimes.” Kylie gave Darcy an apologetic smile, “I’m ready to learn though!”

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Darcy nervously pulled her hair out of the messy ponytail it was in. Her fingers tapped against the table and her eyes started to droop again, and she stared at the English textbook, trying to keep a smile plastered on her face. She had no idea where to start.
“Right. Hi, I’m Kylie.”
Darcy managed a "right" while flipping through the textbook, trying to seem nonchalant while really she had no idea what she was doing.
“It’s fine! I was just getting a bit of shut-eye.”
Darcy blinked for a moment, and before she could stifle it, she burst out laughing. What a coincidence! Maybe they would get along, and maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't have to act so intimidating anymore. It was so tiresome.
"No kidding! So was I. I need my sleep." Darcy flipped to the first page and heard Kylie say something about she not really needing the tutoring. Darcy gave her an apologetic grin before pointing to the Table of Contents.
"Don't worry, I'm not really such a tutor either. So I guess we can learn from each other..." She knew she sounded terribly cheesy, but Darcy had nothing else to say, really. "So do you know what you need work on, or should we go through all the chapters, or what?"

Kylie was sure English could be interesting enough given the people teaching her had time and patience. She wasn’t one to rush through things. She liked asking questions and if it meant sitting through a fifteen minute lecture to finally understand, that was fine. Unfortunately, those fifteen minutes had to be made interesting or else she was lost… and sleepy. Her English teacher neither had the time or patience to worry about one drowsy student. Hopefully, Darcy had the time and patience for questions and repeated confused looks. But, this still was English and she knew it for the most part. There were only a few things that confused her like poems and hidden meanings in plays.
“Really?” Perfect! Her tutor didn’t mind taking naps! In fact, she needed her sleep probably just as much as Kylie did. In fact, Darcy probably totally understood dozing off in class. Okay, actually, that was a lot of assuming. “Haha, wow. Well, it’s nice to know we have something in common.” Kylie smiled, relieved and already feeling better. In fact, she felt more awake as well. Maybe it was just that she’d finally met somebody who she was at least a little bit similar to. Kylie had been feeling isolated lately, but that usually comes with being the new girl.
Kylie grinned. That sounded wonderful. She’d always believed that a teacher had to learn from their students as well. A tutor and a teacher were practically the same. Kylie flipped back to the table of contents and browsed the list. It all seemed sort of familiar but that was probably because they’d already gone over it in class. … And she probably hadn’t been paying attention. “I think it’d be best if we started from the beginning… and went through all the chapters.” Kylie looked up, hoping Darcy wouldn’t mind that. “Is that okay?”
