Screaming. There was lots of screaming. And calling. Calling her brother Marcus. He was here from London for a bit since his sister was going to have a baby and all. He was going to be an uncle. Not that Kayden was particularly worried about that at the moment- she just wanted to get to the hospital, so her brother needed to get over to her apartment ASAP. And he did. Not five minutes late her came busting through the door to help his heavily pregnant sister out of her apartment and down to the waiting cab.
As Marcus helped her into a taxi, she panted, "Marcus, you have to call Jared." She stuffed her phone into his hands then, not even bothering as it nearly fell through his fingers in his surprise.
"But Sis, He's probably-[/i]"
She shook her head, "I don't care! This is his daughter! He can't miss it! I want him there to-" She cut off then as a contraction hit her, forcing her to stop speaking as she grit her teeth, trying to breathe normally. When the pain subsided, she pulled her brother into the cab, telling the cabbie to step on it and get her to the hospital. Marcus called like he was told, and Jared promised to be there.
The cab ride was excruciatingly long, and Kayden grew more and more agitated the further along she got. It was understandable though, since she was having contractions that would make being shot seem like a piece of cake.
When they finally reached the hospital, Kayden was quite ready to get into a hospital bed with some pain killers. After a short span of time, Kayden was contently resting in a hospital bed, still in pain, though it was much more manageable now that she had some pain killers. Really, she could do without all of the beeping from the monitors and such, especially since Marcus, in his curiosity had already tried to break two of the machines. Kayden swat at him as he reached out to poke the monitor showing the baby's heart rate and other stats, "Marcus, don't touch anything!"
Sighing, he sat back down next to the bed, "Fine, fine. Blame me for being curious about my first niece, alright?[/i]" At that, the siblings stuck their tongues out at each other, signature of the Mackenzie children.
The next few hours moved slowly. Kayden rest fitfully, seeing as it was late at night and she was in pain every couple of minutes, but the time was otherwise uneventful. Every half hour or so Kayden would watch the door, waiting for Jared to come in. He really couldn't miss his own daughter's birth could he? Could he? Kay bit her lip and sighed when she realized, again, that Jared wasn't there yet. It was especially frustrating when a nurse would come in to check on her, getting her hopes up that Jared was finally there. Maybe he'd just gotten tied up at Sahara. He was just running late. That was all. Just late...
It was almost three in the morning when the time finally came. There was a lot of screaming then, way more than before, and way more pain, until finally, the noise was all superseded by the loud, wailing cry of a baby. Kayden had done it, she'd given birth to her daughter, Jared's daughter. Drenched in sweat, Kayden took deep, panting breaths as she fell back against the pillows, her eyes falling shut from exhaustion.
She didn't open her eyes when her brother took her sweaty hand, congratulating her, "Kayden, she's beautiful.[/i]" She only opened her eyes when the nurse was bringing her daughter over to her.
Kayden forced herself to sit up, and she took the delicately wrapped bundle carefully in her arms, smiling a little at the rather calm little girl, "Welcome to the world, Jennica." She looked up at her brother, with a small, weary smile, then looked back down at her daughter, "You'll meet your daddy soon enough, Love."
Reluctantly then, she allowed the nurse to take her daughter to the nursery so they could both sleep.
A couple hours later, Kayden sat up in her bed, wondering what was keeping Jared so late at the office, and where her daughter was. Of course, as if to answer all of her questions, her brother walked in, ashen faced. Kayden picked up on it immediately, fearing the worst, "Marcus? What's wrong? Where are Jared and Jennica?"
Marcus moved to sit on the foot of her bed, a sure sign that something bad had happened, "I... I just talked to the emergency room doctor... Relax, Jennica is fine...[/i]" He paused to take a deep breath, "But it's Jared.[/b][/i]"
Any relief Kayden had felt, knowing her daughter was alright, was smothered by the sudden terror that overtook her with those three simple words. Three tiny little words that were leading up to the three that would change her life forever. And not in a good way. Kayden swallowed hard, "W-what? What happened? Is he alright?!"
Marcus reached out to put his hands on Kayden's shoulders, "Kayden... There... There is no easy way to tell you this... Jared... He wasn't held up at Sahara all night. He... He was in the emergency room. His cab was speeding to get him here, and a drunk driver came into their lane.... It was a head on collision...[/i]"
Kayden stiffly pulled herself from her brother's hold, partly because she couldn't believe what she was hearing, and partly because she was so incredibly sore. She shook her head, "No... No.... He- he's alright now, right? Can I see him? Let me see him.... I need to see him...."
Marcus snapped his fingers in front of Kayden's face to get her attention, "Kayden, hey! You can't see him....[/i]" He paused, taking a deep breath, as Kayden inquired why she couldn't, and he responded, "You can't because... Well, He's.... Jared... Jared is dead, Kayden. He didn't make it through surgery.[/i]"
Kayden froze, her face going more pale than should really be humanly possible, "No, no! He can't be! He- He... He just can't!" She shook her head in disbelief, "I... I don't believe you. You're lying to me Marcus!"
Marcus took her face in his hands, forcing her to look at him, "Hey, hey! Kay, I wouldn't lie to you. Not about this. He's gone, Kay....[/i]"
Kayden burst into tears then, dropping her head down and hiding her face in her hands as she wept. Marcus pulled her in close to him, wrapping his arms around her protectively as she cried, her tears soaking his shirt.
After a long half hour of silence on Marcus' part and sobbing on Kayden's, the nurse came in quietly, wheeling a cart with the little baby Jennica in it. Kayden released her brother then, sniffling as she wiped tears from her cheeks, trying to hold it together long enough for the nurse to leave. Once she did, Kayden scooped up her daughter and leaned back on the pillows, crying again as she held her child close, "H-he's gone... Your father is gone. Jared is gone..." She held on to her dark-haired daughter then, closing her eyes, not willing to let go of the only thing she really had left of him- their child, and her memories of him -as the tears spilled down her cheeks.
