...appearance*
hair color Some say red, some say brown. She doesn’t care to say what color it is; all that matters to her is that it’s out of her face while she’s running. One thing to note is that she has quite a few hair extensions but she tends to favor dark purple.
eye color Dark brown.
build She’s a runner, she’s always moving, and she plays as many sports as she can. Not to mention, her mom puts her on these weird health diets from time to time. So, she’s pretty skinny but she’s definitely got some muscle tone.
height Five feet exactly. Sometimes, she appears taller than she is and that’s probably because she has this thing for being on her tip-toes, ready to move.
clothing style Bright. Sometimes, it looks like she’s ready to go to the gym. She just likes wearing what she’s comfortable in and if that’s Capri leggings and a tank top, so be it. Really, though, whatever she ends up in for the day, you can bet it’ll probably hurt your eyes.
distinctive traits

personality
Stella’s a run-on sentence of a person if there ever was one. She’s a complete and utter chatterbox – it takes some real effort to shut her up. Being able to talk a mile a minute is something she must’ve inherited from her father. Then again, he is an auctioneer. When she was little, Stella would have fast conversations over breakfast with her father that started with what they had planned that day and ended in nonsense made up words. Stella loses track of what she’s saying very often and three out of five times, she won’t even know what she was trying to say in the first place. She definitely has her slow moments but they come few and far between.
Stella’s intensely competitive. She almost hates losing more than she loves winning. Nothing frustrates her more than a quitter. She wants her opponents to go all out against her. She doesn’t want them taking breaks during a race or going easy on her during a soccer game. If there’s one thing she hates, it’s when people treat her like a fragile little girl. She gets enough of that from her mother. The thing is, though, just because she doesn’t want a person going easy on her doesn’t mean she won’t go easy on them. Stella’s a runner and she’ll tell you she’s never lost a race but she has this tendency to rest underneath a nice tree once she’s got a comfortable lead. It’s led to her losing a couple of times – but don’t say anything. That’ll flip her lid.
Stella has an abundance of energy. She’s not very patient and she hates staying still. The only way she can deal sitting in class for so long is by constantly fidgeting. She tends to tap her feet, twiddle her thumbs, and shift in her chair. Due to all this excess energy, she’s really quite high-strung. Stella is always on the tip of her toes, ready to move, ready to take on the world. She’s easily spooked because she focuses so much on something that the world around her seems to fade away. Don’t scare her, though. She’ll just try beating you up (try being the key word here). A lot of her energy goes into running and various sports – whichever she finds most interesting that week.
past
Kansas City, Missouri sucked.
Estella Raeanne Hines would have preferred growing up anywhere else; absolutely anywhere. The weather sucked, the people sucked, the city sucked. She hated it. It was almost always cold and when it happened to be warm, she could barely tell. Heat was her paradise. Her parents scolded her constantly for turning up the heat when they weren’t home. Stella (which she went by as often as she could; her mother insisted on Estella being a beautiful name and would correct anybody she heard calling her daughter ‘Stella’) probably wouldn’t have minded Kansas City, Missouri so much if she’d been able to find things to do.
Unfortunately, the one thing she was constantly doing (and it wasn’t even up to her) was being entered in beauty pageants. She would never understand how she’d liked it that first year. It might have been the constant attention from her parents that she enjoyed or maybe it was the desire to beat out all the other girls. Whatever it was, she had liked it for a little while. It wasn’t until after she’d won that Stella realized how much she hated it. From there on out, Stella did all she could to keep those dresses off of her.
Of course, this did not settle well with her mother. Her dad, being an auctioneer, didn’t have much of an opinion on the matter. He knew he could be proud of his daughter whether she was winning pageants or not. How her mother and dad got along, Stella would never know. They rarely fought and were always being lovey-dovey but she couldn’t understand how a pageant queen and an auctioneer would ever get along. Then again, any concept of love was weird to Stella. It was why she’d never cared for those Disney Princess movies or the color pink like most girls her age had.
Sometimes, it felt like Kansas City was getting back at her for all the hate she showed it. Seriously, why bother bragging about over 200 fountains when Rome still beat you? First came the Ice Storm. It meant not playing outside and being stuck inside with her mother was torture. It was all planning for the next pageant and trying on dresses (because it wasn’t like she could escape outside). Just the year after that was an outrageous amount of tornados. They’d stayed in the basement for what felt like weeks. Stella would have liked peeking outside to catch sight of one but her parents would have none of that (obviously).
It wasn’t long after this that her parents decided to move. Her mother was worried about the weather and her dad tended to agree with whatever his wife said. Stella was ecstatic. They were leaving the Little Apple (Kansas City, if you can’t be the best, don’t even try, seriously) for the Big Apple. It took a few months for them to move – lots of packing and cleaning and Stella arguing with her mom over all the things she’d rather bring than those garish dresses. They were quite well off and because of it, Stella loved house hunting. They looked at huge homes with lots of rooms and big yards. Yes, Stella liked New York.
present
Before enrolling at Baum Academy, Stella had only ever attended public schools. Despite loving their new home, she was beyond excited to see what dorm life was like. Stella loved new experiences. It was also that she’d finally be away from her crazy mother. She stills gets a call every day. Sometimes, Stella manages to control the conversation with news of school and friends and sports. Other times, her mother never shuts up over new pageant opportunities and dresses she almost bought.
Stella’s tried out for every sport she can and then some. However, she either gets bored of it after a few weeks or she doesn’t bother to show up for practice on the first day. Cross Country is one of the few constants in her life. She attends every practice, every meet, every everything. Admittedly, being told how and where and when to run isn’t her cup of tea. But if she can earn something from running (trophies and ribbons), then she’s happy to be bossed around for the time being.
Stella’s grades are forever dropping and rising. She hates class. She hates sitting still. She hates learning things she’ll never use in life. If something is keeping her from running and playing, she hates it. However, you have to have good grades to stay on a team. Stella gets her butt in gear at the last minute when it comes to homework and studying. Classmates hate having her as a group member but at least the teachers have learned to put up with her.
family
Victoria Hines ;; there’s a strong love/hate relationship between Stella and her mother. Sure, Stella can’t hate the woman who puts clothes on her back and food in her mouth. Unfortunately, Stella can’t love a woman who wants to stuff her in gaudy gowns. Despite Stella’s constant disapproval towards all things pageant-like, her mother just won’t leave it alone.
Joshua Hines ;; Stella’s dad is a bit of a pushover. He prefers agreeing with his wife and he never raises his voice (except for when auctioning things off). Stella adores him but really wishes he’d stand up a bit more. Still, she just wants to make him proud (quite easy, though) so he’s always the first to hear if she’s won a race or aced a test.

book title the tortoise and the hare
backstory So, this annoying little hare is bragging to everybody about how awesome and fast he is. This tortoise calls him out and so the hare is all “I bet you couldn’t beat me” and the tortoise is like “challenge accepted.” So, they set up a course the next day. The hare is all tired so he just takes a nap like whatevs. After the hare wakes up, he realizes the tortoise still isn’t anywhere near the finish. So the hare goes to have some breakfast. And then he naps again. What an idiot, right? Then HE WAKES UP! And the tortoise is ALMOST AT THE FINISH LINE! The hare runs and runs and runs but the tortoise beats him. And totally rubs it in the hare’s face. “Slowly does it every time!” OMG TORTOISE, HOW RUDE.
