name Byron Leonardo Moina
nickname Byron is just fine, though you can call him whatever. He's okay with it.
age 17, though he looks a bit older.
gender Male
grade Baum Senior
hometown Kapalua; in Maui, Hawaii.
sexuality Heterosexual.
personification The Mock Turtle.
status Dormant, though he swears that he hears his put turtle talk sometimes... maybe it's just him.
face claim Kevin Zegers.
...appearance*
hair color Black
eye color Greyish-greenish-blue.
build ...he's preetty built from years of surfing, and he's trying not to lose that. So he does jog sometimes, when it's warm enough.
height 6'2"
clothing style Always wears long sleeves and pants, seeing as New York is always cold to him, though he still can't get used to the confined feel of anything other than sandals for his feet. And he likes coats, those kind that aren't tight but still sort of hug you. He's a bit protective over his coats. He likes to hide himself in them. Plus, long sleeves cover up his arm, so he can get away from telling his story when he doesn't want to.
distinctive traits On his right arm and his back and his left leg are pretty nasty looking scars, arranged in crescent patterns. He walks with a limp sometimes, when his leg is bothering him.
He always wears his shark tooth necklace. Always.
...personal*
personality Byron isn't exactly your average surfer dude. In fact, the only quality that he's kept is that he's pretty mellow. When other people are fighting, he doesn't try to stop it, he just walks on. Really action-related things that don't have to do with water hold no interest for him. He's not one to raise his voice even when he's mad, and he doesn't get mad very often. Byron often handles arguments instead by giving someone the silent treatment or quietly talking them out of it. Mostly this is because he's just too tired to deal with such things, seeing as he has trouble sleeping with the hustle and bustle of the city around him. Lately he has simply taken up putting headphones in and listening to relaxing music in order to fall asleep, but it's not exactly working.
Since he's been sent to New York, he's become rather melancholy. It's a rare occasion to see him smile, though there are a certain few people who can make him happy... at least for a while. He's just not as happy anymore without his surfing or his dad or his old life, really. Not to mention the survivor's guilt. He doesn't like telling the story, but if you ask, then he'll sigh and just give it to you. Byron's not the type to put up much of a fight about anything, really. His anger just dissolves into sadness, usually.
One thing he is happy around no matter what, though, is marine life. Since his father's death, he has built up more respect for the creatures that live in the sea, and wants to study them for a living. So whenever you talk about some sort of sea-faring topic, he's right on it and is happy, unless it's about something negative, of course. That's one of the few times he gets angry, when people are disrespecting the ocean in any way, really.
past Byron used to be happy. He lived in Maui, Hawaii, in a town where it was either resort or farmland. His father had met his mother while vacationing here since she worked at the resort, and they had bought a little farm only a few minutes away from the resort. It was small and kind of quiet, away from much of the hustle and bustle. Though they were never married and his mother died giving birth to his child, his father never really let it get to him or little Byron, and instead raised him to not be angry and to respect the things around him. Once he began approaching the teen years, though, Byron started losing respect, so his father taught him how to surf and got him SCUBA certified.
But Byron wasn't just being influenced by his dad. He was homeschooled, but he hung out with the kids nearby or staying at the resort. To put it frankly, they were disrespectful motherfuckers, but Byron didn't care. He started growing apart from his father and towards them, until his father had enough and grounded him, threatening to send him somewhere else if he didn't behave. He was 15. Near the end of this nearly two-month-long punishment, his father decided to take Byron surfing.
Of course, Byron didn't want to go, so he wasn't the most enthusiastic while they swam out. The sun was close to setting, and he was saying the worse words he could possibly say, though his dad was silent. After a bit of that, he let up and started doing the stupidest stuff in the water, like splashing around and making the hugest commotion, pretending he was drowning. His dad started to help him, but then something bumped his leg, and it wasn't Byron or a surfboard. His father was frozen with fear, and just muttered one last statement to Byron.
"Get to the shore. Now."
Byron, thinking it was a joke, didn't move. A moment later, his dad was pulled under the water. Byron didn't react at first, but once he realized it, he sprang into action. Though the light was dim, he could make out the form of a shark attacking a familiar man. He swam toward the shark and lashed out at it, hitting it in the eyes and nostrils. The shark released his father and swam away. Byron dragged his father to the surface and found a surfboard, placing him on it and attempting to swim toward the shore. His father didn't look good; the shark had grabbed him in his upper thigh and lower torso. He was still alive, but it wasn't going to be for long if he didn't get attention right away.
Byron had been taught these lessons by the man he was trying to save, so he knew they might work. He made sure to keep him awake so he wouldn't go into shock with words of apology and promises to make him proud, but he couldn't put pressure on the wound without stopping.
They weren't fast enough as it was.
They hadn't gotten very far when the shark came back, grabbing Byron's left leg and pulling him under. He fought back, getting it to release his leg, but grabbing his arm instead. Now, he knew sharks were not supposed to be this aggressive, so he was a little surprised past the pain. Getting it to finally give up and release him fully, Byron went back up to the surface to find the surfboard his dad had been on only a moment ago was empty.
He screamed for him. He went under and looked around, but by then it was too dark to see. So he simply had to grab onto the boad and kick with one leg all the way back to shore. Luckily, there were people there and he was rushed to the hospital. They never found his father.
After he pretty much recovered, he was put in the care of his closest relative; his mother's twin brother. But he was young, and newly married, and they did not want to deal with the average teenage boy they thought Byron would still be. So they sent him off to New York, to a boarding school called Baum Academy.
present Byron hates New York. He hates it with every fiber of his being that can physically be capable of hate (which isn't a lot, by the way) and just wants to go back to his old life. Seeing as that is impossible, he's stuck in dreary but loud New York, where respect is at a minimum. Because ever since that day, he's cared about respect. Everything his late father said hit home and he finally understood why he had taught him that. He doesn't hate sharks; it was Byron's fault the shark had attacked in the first place, after all.
Though he is sad most of the time, it is not hard for him to find friends that will make him happy with puns or whatever tactic they use. Puns are a really good way to cheer him up, though. Byron is working at the local aquarium, interning, and will attend Barrie University after senior year to study marine biology. It's all he wants to do now, because if he becomes a marine biologist, he can move back to Hawaii maybe. Or go to Florida or California or some place that isn't here.
familyKalea Moina | Mother | Deceased
Died giving birth to Byron. Byron's father legally requested he'd take his mother's last name in order to remember her by.Alexander Megalos | Father | Deceased
His father took care of him since he was born. Missing, presumed dead of shark-related wounds.Kaleo Moina | Uncle | Legal Guardian
Sent Byron off to boarding school the first chance he got. Does not contact Byron.
likes PUNS. Byron absolutely adores puns. He actually thinks they're funny, in a way, and will legit laugh at them a little bit.
MARINE LIFE. This is a given. If Byron could live underwater, he could.
MARINE BIOLOGY. The study of marine life is also pretty high up on Byron's list.
RESPECT. It's rather important to him.
TURTLES. They're his favorite type of animal. Sometimes he's weird and wishes he could be a turtle, but whatever, that's impossible. He has a put turtle named Alexander, after his father.
COWS. He had like two back at home on the farm that he loved.
dislikes MEAT. Eating it, that is. He loves animals too much to even think about it. He's in a few organizations that are trying to lower the amount of meat that is wasted because they send too much to stores.
HABITAT DESTRUCTION.
DISRESPECT.
PEOPLE WHO FEAR/MISUNDERSTAND SHARKS.
PEOPLE WHO MESS WITH NATURE LIKE IT'S NOTHING.
other notes ...I-I didn't partially name him after a teenage mutant ninja turtle. I'm offended you would even BEGIN to think that... /hides

book title Alice in Wonderland
backstory After the Queen finds out that Alice has not seen the Mock Turtle or knows what the fuck that sorcery was, she takes her to the Gryphon who in turn takes her to the Mock Turtle to learn his history. Which he begins with "I used to be a turtle," and went on by describing his school and what he learned, including a LOT of puns that made Hedgie go 'i c whut you did thar'. They never really got to how he became not-a-turtle because Alice kept interrupting, so instead they taught her a a dance including lobsters and made her recite verses incorrectly until the trial began.
