Lunch was one of Alara’s favorite times of the day. Granted she did enjoy classes, lunch was when you could hear the gossip. She wasn’t a gossiping kind of girl, but she did enjoy the stories she’d overhear. She did her best to sit next to the crowds of people, and pick through the conversations while she had her lunch. She would have lunch with her sister, but Alana usually roamed the school for that period if she was even around on the campus. Alana scoped the dining hall, looking for a decent place to sit, when she saw him. Byron. He was in one of his classes, and they knew each other. Maybe not the best of friends, but she had noticed him. Then again—it was hard not to notice him.
With her best smile she made her way over to him, murmuring ‘excuse me’s’ and soft ‘watch out’s as she made her way to over to her fellow classmate. A few people did a double take at her—her sister wasn’t known for being polite. The stares didn’t last too long when it finally did register. The lack of punky clothing and color in her hair clued them in to which twin it actually was. Her blonde hair fell to her waist, but unlike her face-sharer, she tended to let it fall into waves rather than the meticulously straightened strands that her sister preferred.
Alana slid into the seat next to Byron and flashed him that same smile. “Hey. Is this seat taken?” She asked, almost with an air that she didn’t actually care if the seat was taken—because her skinny ass was plopped right in it. She leaned over to reach in her bag, pulling out a Ziploc bag with a sandwich in it, and a bad of Sunchips. Without waiting, she yanked the bag open and took a bite of her sandwich. She crossed one leg over the other, and looked at him with raised brows. “So, do you have friends to join you, or do you just sit alone or something?” She watched him with those large blue doe-eyes framed in thick black eyeliner.
Her foot bounced on air while she waited patiently. Unlike her sister, she wasn’t terribly socially inept. She was a little more sociable, maybe not the most smiley person around, but it helped to not be quite so grumpy all the time.

Byron usually sat alone at lunch, because usually all he did was complain, and he didn't want his friends to have to go through that. He complained about the food, mostly, because the food here was bleak and flavorless to him. Which was pretty much how all food that wasn't Hawaiian tasted to him. Yeah, maybe that was a little dramatic, but that was how much he missed home. It almost made him cry, sometimes.
Of course, he could go back once the school year was over. Once he was done at Baum Academy, he could go back home. The only problem? He was going to Barrie University next year, simply because it seemed like a good college. But at least he could visit Hawaii as much as he wanted to on breaks. Thinking of home made him warm, so he absentmindely took his coat of and let it hang on the back of his seat, exposing his scars.
And when he graduated from Barrie...
"Hey. Is this seat taken?”
Snapping out of his deep thought, he looked over the the girl who was now sitting next to him. Oh, it was Alara. He considered her a very pretty friend, and she was already sitting, so he shrugged. Which didn't feel all that great on his arm, but he was used to it.
“So, do you have friends to join you, or do you just sit alone or something?”
"I usually sit alone at lunch," he said, not really sure how to explain the reason. Admit that he was a bit of an emo kid and would probably drive his friends away anyways? Please. Byron was still a teenage boy, and pride and ego were stil in there somewhere.

Alara’s eyes slid down to look at his scars for a moment, then looked back up at his face. It was rude to stare. “How come? You’re friendly enough.” She added, taking another bite of her sandwich. Her eyes slid up to the table where the rest of her soccer team sat. They gave her a strange look. Alara usually danced from table to table for lunch, but by the end of the period she’d usually be sitting with her teammates. So they were surprised to find her at a barren table, next to a kid with a bunch of scars. Alara gave them a wave, and raised her brows before looking back up at Byron.
“You like Sun Chips?” She asked, putting her sandwich in her lap, to open up the bag of chips, and shook them towards her companion. “So, you’re from…Hawaii right? Have you ever seen a volcano explode?” She pulled a chip out, and nibbled on the edge of it, her eyes wide and round. Stories, she liked stories. She was hoping there would be some giant, awesome, thrilling story attached to some volcano survival. Didn’t they go off all the time there?
Byron was handsome, and the scars didn’t detract from that. If anything, it made him a little more mysterious, a little more curious. She didn’t want to just straight out ask him where the scars came from, because—hello, rude much? She did her best to not look back down at them, and distracted herself by finishing of her chip and taking another bite out of her sandwich.

Byron expected her to and saw her look at his scars. Because honestly, everyone did, and it was okay. It was his fault for taking off his jacket, right? Yeah, that's why he wore it when he really didn't want to tell his sob story.
“How come? You’re friendly enough.”
"Trust me, I'm not the happiest guy to talk to," he admitted with a sort of sarcastic chuckle. He also wasn't the most interesting to talk to. Or the most positive. Or really the most self-confident at all, if you thought about it enough. Well, he didn't really have to think about it all that much.
He turned his head to look at the friends she waved at. Yeah, they probably wanted her to sit back with them. But honestly, it was up to her. "Soccer team, right?" he asked, an alright guess. He knew what sport teams looked like, seeing as he usually gravitated towards having athetic friends since he had the personality, and he thought he had seen her at a soccer game he went to once.
“You like Sun Chips?” She asked, putting her sandwich in her lap, to open up the bag of chips, and shook them towards her companion. “So, you’re from…Hawaii right? Have you ever seen a volcano explode?”
Byron nodded, and took a chip. "Thanks." Then he smiled, because that's pretty much what everyone who knew he was from Hawaii asked. "Yeah, I went with my friends once." Not that he cared for the time he spent with his friends and not his dad much anymore. "My friend Maleko got way to close to the lava, though. He almost got burned, the idiot," he laughed, remembering the clown of the group of friends and his habit of always getting into trouble. "He was just standing there, waving at us while we tried to get him to come back. Luckily his girlfriend Kiana pulled him out of the way. They were at a safe distance when he thing blew a bit. He hadn't even seen it bubbling."
This was probably the most he had smiled all month. Hell, it was probably more time spent smiling than all the smiles this month combined, because that made sense. And he was smiling right at Alara. Of course, this meant that he kind of noticed, as he always noticed when people were trying not to stare. "You can look, it's okay," he said, shrugging again. "I can tell you how I got them, if you want." For some reason, Byron just wanted to keep telling her stories. He had quite a few.

Alara glanced over again when Byron brought attention to the team that kept glancing back at her. "Yep." She watched them for a moment longer, before turning her attention back to Byron. Honestly, she hadn't expected for him to answer. She had thought she was being stupid, making a joke, being...flirty, but when he actually said he had her attention skyrocketed. Her blue eyes went wide, watching his face as he laughed and recalled the story; slowly moving the chips to her lips as she listened.
She had to admit though--she liked the way he said certain words. It ha that foriegn twinge, that deep swoop that was known for being a Hawaiian accent. Something that only someone could pick up by being there for a long, long time. The simple words made her imagine bright blue oceans and white sandy beaches in the summer sun. "Well, that was dumb to get close to a volcano. I don't think you could get me near one unless you mean to toss me in." Alara looked in her bag of chips, and pulled out another, before offering the bag to Byron again.
Though--she almost dropped the bag when he brought up the scars. Her pale face suddenly burst to life in a flare of pink, and she did indeed drop the bag onto the table. Her elbows went to the table, and her forehead went to her hands, index and thumb finger she used to grab her chips away from her skin, of course. "I'm sorry. I'm a jerk, I didn't mean to stare. I was just curious, I..." She picked her head back up and put her hands in her lap. Alara had a special gift that she didn't know about--the ability for those big blue to take on the quality of a guilty puppy. "I didn't mean to stare. I just...thought they looked kind of cool." She mumbled, picking at her one sleeved shirt. Honestly--she hadn't taken his offer to share the story seriously. She took it as him being sarcastic, putting her back in her place.
Alana would laugh her ass off if she could see this. Her older sister, shoving her foot straight into her mouth and down her throat. Peachy. "I'm really, really sorry." Alara mumbled, staring down at her shirt now instead of Byron. God, she was such a jerk.
